Rich10782 Posted June 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Anyone have and suggestions on where to stay in San Juan. I have reward points for free stays at Marriott and Hyatt hotels so I would rather stay at one of them. Where should I stay or where shouldn't I stay? Aquahound Posted June 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 30, 2009 I am a big fan of the Marriott Stellaris Casino Hotel. I stayed there 2 years ago and it was my favorite SJ hotel. There is plenty to do w/in walking distance. Also, if you book an Oceanview room, you get free access to the rooftop concierge lounge.

jeniferlyn Posted June 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 30, 2009 We just stayed at the Marriott Stellaris a few weeks ago for one night. I booked the room on Priceline and they ended up giving us an executive suite!! Beautiful...the bathroom was gorgeous.
cruisenfever Posted June 30, 2009 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Just be prepared to pay the SJ resort tax that could be as much as 14%. This is not included in the cost of your room and is paid when you check out. ken_nyc Posted June 30, 2009 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2009 We will be staying in the Marriott Hotel & Stellaris Casino in August for our pre-cruise...heard so many good things about it.
ubdkjrb Posted June 30, 2009 #7 Share Posted June 30, 2009 Depends on when you're arriving/leaving and what you want to be able to do. If you just want a place to sleep before the cruise, it really doesn't matter where you stay. If you want to arrive and leave +/- a day and you want to relax on the beach, I'd suggest somewhere in the Condado Beach area. If you want to shop/sightsee in Old San Juan, that's where you should stay. I would agree though, the Stellaris is a great hotel especially if you want to burn your points. You can get a pretty decent rate on the Hilton or Intercontinental going thru Priceline (about $100 plus the dreaded resort tax). Peter
nanfromatlanta Posted June 30, 2009 #8 Share Posted June 30, 2009 When in San Juan for business and/or pleasure, we always stay at the San Juan Marriott Hotel & Stellaris Casino.
Rare dna1990 Posted June 30, 2009 #9 Share Posted June 30, 2009 If your Marriott points are not valid at the Stellaris Casino, try the Isla Verde Courtyard. It has less walking-distance offerings, but has dancing, casino, beach - all perfect for a short pre/post cruise night. Our room had a great balcony overlooking the beach. No resort fee was added. Dinner options after 9pm were limited. But there was a pizza delivery guy that showed up while we were walking thru lobby.
turquoisesea Posted June 30, 2009 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2009 If you want to use your Marriott points...under no circumstances should you stay at the San Juan Miramar Courtyard. A very poor excuse for a Marriott hotel. I'm surprised they allow it to stay in their chain....IMHO

Very clean, helpful staff, excellent bedding, nice rooms, very good bathrooms, a very good restaurant on the premises ... the location is very quiet, but you can walk to bars and restaurants, and a grocery store ... it was about a 10-minute cab ride to the pier. We had 3 rooms in all, and we were all very pleased with them.

Peter I really liked the Isla Verde area around the Intercontinental and it really was a blast from the past as far as hotels are concerned. It has a great 80's style pool and the beach is nice. However, I've heard far better things about the Stella Solaris and plan to stay there on my next visit !!! :)
chazg Posted July 1, 2009 #14 Share Posted July 1, 2009 I just booked the Stellaris on Priceline for $80.00 for the end of August. I have heard so many good things about it I can't wait to get there if only for 1 night!
megr1125 Posted July 1, 2009 #15 Share Posted July 1, 2009 the SJ Marriott Resort and STELLARIS CASINO (STELLARIS is the name of the CASINO NOT the hotel....) is lovely...........took a tour in November...and if you have status with Marriott you should be able to score a nice room, even on points. Also, their concierge lounge is beautiful with a nice array of items-i saw their breakfast offerings-looked good! That would be your best bet for a Marriott close to OSJ---you could hop a cab. The Renaissance La Concha is supposed to be nice as well, but I have heard that the rooms are rather smallish.

We had 3 rooms in all, and we were all very pleased with them. I'm glad you had a good stay, ours, however, was not. I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. We were there in March, 2008 before we sailed on the Crown Princess. Our rooom was pretty small for a Courtyard, and unfortunately was by the elevator and very noisy. And... I am not picky, I just want a comfortable bed and a clean room. The very small restaurant they have for breakfast had very, very slow service. And...when we got home there was an extra charge on my credit card charged by the hotel on a day we were in St. Thomas. It took quite a while to get a response from Marriott because the hotel is actually owned by another hotel chain. It was taken care of, however. So, perhaps we just hit a bad time.

We have stayed at the Conrad Condado Plaza when it was the Wyndham. It's a great hotel with a great beach and casino. This coming January we are sailing the SOS and will likely bid for the Caribe Hilton; a resort hotel on Priceline. Winning bids are around $100. Technically, it's not in the Condado area but it's just across the bay from it. My brother and his family stayed there in March and said it was definitely properly rated as resort class. It doesn't seem like the Conrad gets much action from Priceline but Hotwire often has it listed for slightly more than the Condado Plaza. Alexis Posted July 1, 2009 #18 Share Posted July 1, 2009 I am a big fan of the Marriott Stellaris Casino Hotel. I stayed there 2 years ago and it was my favorite SJ hotel. There is plenty to do w/in walking distance. Also, if you book an Oceanview room, you get free access to the rooftop concierge lounge. Surrounded by and within walking distance of many restaurants and shops. A Walgreen's to pick up the things that we can't bring on the planes anymore. Right on the water with a beautiful beach and a pool. A great hotel in a nice area of Condado, half way between the airport and the pier. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sjupr-san-juan-marriott-resort-and-stellaris-casino/ When this site opens, the large picture will change to show you more of the hotel. ;) EDIT: There are 4 Marriotts in San Juan, so make sure you know which one you are booking. Tweety2 Posted July 1, 2009 #19 Share Posted July 1, 2009 Rich10782 You should go to the thread for this cruise date and you can chat with people that will be going on Nov. 1 on AOS. Also have you signed up for the Meet n Mingle? Don't know if it applies to you but did you notice they have another price drop for this date for +55? I saved $500 off our JS! mjyanne Posted July 15, 2009 #21 Share Posted July 15, 2009 Anyone have and suggestions on where to stay in San Juan. I have reward points for free stays at Marriott and Hyatt hotels so I would rather stay at one of them. Where should I stay or where shouldn't I stay? Since you want the Conado area, I would say either the Marriott Stellaris or La Concha (Next door about 300 yards away). Both are nice (I prefer the Stellaris). Also, when using points, I have never been assessed the resort fee. The Courtyard Isle Verde is also very nice if you decide to stay near the airport. cruisnfool Posted July 15, 2009 #22 Share Posted July 15, 2009 My vote goes to Marriot Stellaris.......we used Marriot points and they did not add resort tax. My husband won in the casino after losing every night on the cruise. Beautiful hotel and pool. One thing to be cautious of. The resturant in the hotel for 2 people with wine was more than the room. aggie1 Posted July 15, 2009 #24 Share Posted July 15, 2009 We stayed in April of 07 at the Sheraton Old San Juan and really loved it. Could walk to everything in old town and had a room with a beautiful view of the water. Casino was awful, but restaurant was good but a little pricey. Only ate there the day we arrived. Had a great outside bar overlooking the water. Would stay there again.
