MightyQuinn Posted July 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2009 We’ll be in Tangier for a full day during a transatlantic cruise in Nov/09. I searched CC and TripAdvisor but there’s not much info provided. Does anyone have recent experience arranging a private guide there? Any suggestions for “don’t miss” things to do? TIA. gary Posted July 3, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 3, 2009 We’ll be in Tangier for a full day during a transatlantic cruise in Nov/09. I searched CC and TripAdvisor but there’s not much info provided. Does anyone have recent experience arranging a private guide there? Any suggestions for “don’t miss” things to do? TIA. Last year we had a wonderful guide in Tangiers. Here is the info he sent us. The van was luxurious and Aziz is a very good guide with perfect english. He kept the peddlers at a distance, and everywhere we went the locals knew him. The highlight by far was the old city. Hercules cave was also great, but only because we were the only ones there. When we were leaving, the tour busses arrived and hundreds of tourists filled the cave that we just had all to ourselves. Here is what he sent us: I will be very happy to organize your VIP Day Trip to Tangier on Oct 29 ,2008. The only thing is that you are going to be with other people on the tour.I have already a confirmation from 4 people. The tour itinerary would be as the following : Arrive at the port of Tangier where you will be assisted with customs formalities and transferred from the port to start the visit of Tangier. This tour is with an air-conditioning minibus, an interesting drive through the richest area of Tangier’s zone of villas and palaces passing via the king's palace and celebrities homes (Barbara Hutton and Malcolm Forbs). Visit Cape Spartel which is the northest western point of Africa, it is the exact point where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Then visit the Caves of Hercules (dating from the Neolithic era). A stop to take pictures of the camels and if you like to experience a ride. After a short drive return to Tangier for the cultural tour which will be in the Kasbah and the Medina, the oldest and the most exotic part of this mythical city. An opportunity to be in direct contact with the friendly locals! Begin your tour of the old city to visit the Kasbah taking the itinerary of Matisse, the French famous painter who stayed here between 1912 and 1913 , snake charmers, the Medina where you will enjoy the world famous Moroccan cuisine while you relax to the entertainment of Andalusian musicians and belly dancer , Gran Socco,Petit Socco,Old American Legation, founded in 1821 (the 1st National Landscape for the USA in the overseas),the Mendoubia building and Gardens (The international administration when Tangier was under-control of 8 powerful countries) and then the market for shopping. The price per person is 35 Euros including : -Air conditioned Transportation -Entrance fees to museums -English speaking Private guide escort services -Local Taxes What is not included is lunch and drinks, but I can book for you lunch in a moroccan typical Restaurant. To confirm the tour please send an email or you cancall me at +212 61 26 33 35 . At arrival in the port of Tangier I will be holding a paper on it your name. The tour would be for around 5 hours total but I still need to know at what time the cruise ship will be arriving in Tangier. I am looking forward to hearing from you and thank you. Can I ask how it worked out with the other folks that Aziz had already booked on the tour? How many in total were there? And did you have lunch at a typical Moroccan restaurant? Thanks! gary Posted July 3, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 3, 2009 As it happened, the other people did not show, so the 6 of us had a private tour. As for lunch, it was offered, but Aziz brought us to a small bakery where we were given "pita" sized loafs of bread hot out of the brick oven. It was wonderful and it filled us enough. Shortly thereafter, he brought us into an amazing outdoor covered market and we bought some olives and fruit. Probably one of the best and most memorable lunches ever! Here are a few pics: the first one is in the cave. It is an opening that looks like the African continent. You need to rotate it. the second is the bread and bakery and the last two are in the market. I hope you enjoy tangiers as much as we did. We're really looking forward to our time in Tangier. Thanks for sharing your pics!
Croooser Posted July 4, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2009 We used Aziz as well - same itinerary. Great tour. The Kasbah was a unique experience. I would strongly recommend that you avoid any raw fruits or vegetables even in the restaurants.
MightyQuinn Posted July 4, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted July 4, 2009 We used Aziz as well - same itinerary. Great tour. Do you remember his full name? I've learned that there's Aziz Benami & Aziz Begdouri operating in Tangier. Both offer virtually identical tours at the same price. I wonder if it's the same guy?:confused:
dcdee Posted July 5, 2009 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2009 We used Aziz Begdouri in September and had much the same experience as Gary, although we had Mohammad as our guide. The cost was the same for a private tour for my wife and me. We corresponded with him at aziztour at hotmail dot com. Very interesting day. lkakers Posted February 24, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 24, 2010 Hi, I'm resurrecting this old thread to see if anyone out there has had any more recent tour experiences in Tangier. I will be there at the end of April with a party of 6-8 and are looking into doing our own tour arrangements instead of doing the ship's tour. Any suggestions? Is Aziz still a good bet? Thanks,
