New Fairfield Inn Times Square

Thinking of staying at this hotel in September. It is in the Times Square area at 330 West 40th Street, near the Port Authority Bus Station. My only concern is that it wouldn't be an area we could safely walk to Times Square and other attractions around that area. It is rated in Trip Advisor as the #9 hotel in the area. Does anyone have opinions on the area or the hotel itself?

Number 9 hotel in the area? Not even close.

That said, the area is fine and you will be fine walking to Times Square. The hotel is about 2 blocks from the heart of Times Square. Cops are everywhere, very safe.

Manhattan in general is very safe. Midtown Manhattan where this is, is extremely safe. There are police everywhere for quality at life issues. This is the midtown south area. here are the stats.

this isn't the NY City of the late '80s early '90's. the grand larceny is mostly pick pockets...so watch your wallet/pocketbook...

Its even safe at night with so many people about...

since 1980 there has been an almost 80% drop in crime in NY. Some people say that statistics lie but I suggest looking at Murders and GLA(grand larceny auto) as examples. I would think almost all murders are reported and that for stolen cars...most of which are insured...to get anything back from the insurance company you HAVE to have a police report. I do think for the rest and especially rape that the percentage of people reporting these crimes have in fact gone up since the police have more time to investigate them since crime is so much down.....

While I agree that NYC is much, much safer than it used to be, I live three blocks north on 43rd & 9th and know the area very well; in fact, I walked past the hotel this afternoon. The hotel itself is brand new, looks great, and will be fine. However---in order to get to 8th Avenue (and then turn north to the Times Square area), you will have to walk past two porn DVD stores, a liquor store that serves the homeless population hanging around the bus station, and a New York State parole office. There is also major street construction going on in that block (W. 40th btw. 8th & 9th Avenues), as well as another building being constructed right next to the Fairfield. If you turn west and go to 9th (much closer), you can turn right and go north past the rear entrance to the station, but you should stay on the east side of 9th because there is a fairly large number of homeless on the west side of 9th hanging out under the bus ramp bridge that leads into the station. Now, none of this is particularly dangerous. I walk it day or night (there's a great fish market at 40th & 9th), but it may be a little startling to you, and it's really not the same as staying in the tourist-oriented part of the area.

Thanks RHefley228, appreciate the detailed candid info you gave!

Check on travelzoo.com for your dates. You might find a hotel closer to the middle of Timesquare that you would be better off in. You can find some good last minute deals on there.
