Cabin safe question

Recommended Posts

We recently purchased a 13-inch notebook computer and I'm wondering if it would fit in the cabin safe. I'm thinking it will be too big.

How about in a hotel room safe?

What have been your experiences?

Thanks.

It'll be too big for the cabin or hotel safes that I've seen. But I've also never had anything stolen from my room that was left out of the safe. There are computer locks that you can get for laptops that allow you to chain it to things like a bedpost or deskleg (the desk are not removeable), if you're really worried about it. Otherwise a lot of folks just stick it in a drawer so that passers-by aren't tempted. It's pretty unlikely a crew member would steal it.

I agree with uppitycats. I've lugged my laptop on 4 cruises and numerous hotel rooms and never had a problem. However, I would worry more about theft in a hotel than a cruise ship. But I do put it out of sight of temptation, just in case.

I have just locked mine in the suitcase stashed under the bed. Not foolproof, but someone would have to wrestle the suit case from under the bed and steal the whole suitcase to get at it. I've never had a "presumed" empty suitcase stolen before.

here's a photo of the safe on the spirit, the star had the same type of safe (when we were on her). never a problem, i have..sometimes..tucked the laptop down between the sofa and the drapes, in a balcony room. but only to get it out of the way. the biggest problem is that ...sometimes...when they clean the rooms, they leave the doors open. to keep other cruisers from seeing what i have, i may put it away.

the safe is big enough for a couple of wallets, passport, maybe a camera (depending on size of camera).

Tell that to the poster who swore he had $200 stolen from his safe.:p

codycats Money stolen from room safe.

Problem on the ship:

My biggest problem was that somebody got into my cabin safe and stole $200.

I have been on 37 cruises and never had this happen before. I took $2,000 in cash on the trip. Some people would say that's a lot to take, but I would rather buy with cash at the ports than charge.

I had $1,400 in hundred dollar bills tied with a rubber band, and left in the safe as soon as we boarded about 1PM.

I went to the buffet for lunch and then back to the cabin where I was greeted by my cabin steward who said to me he "took the liberty" to put my luggage in the room.

It's now about 5 PM and I'm changing for dinner and opened the safe to put my cell phone in it. I counted the money and to my surprise only had $1,300.

I told my wife and the other couples that traveled with us. They all said maybe I miscounted, or something to make me feel better. I work with money all day. I never miscount or make errors with cash, but I wasn't going to allow this to ruin my vacation. I counted the money as I spent it and kept tabs on the amounts.

On Friday night before dinner I had $1,200 in $100 bills in the safe. I marked the bills.

After dinner we began packing. We were walkoffs at the dock so I didn't need to pack and leave the luggage outside. I went to the safe, counted the money and to my surprise only $1,100.

Another $100 bill was taken. I called security. They came to my room and took a report. I filled out a loss form that was signed by the pursers office. Now I have to call Miami and fight to get my money back.

They checked the lock and the only people to enter my room was my wife and I and the cabin steward.

When we arrived in NY I wanted NYPD or PA police. I was told that the cruise line would handle the investigation and that the steward would be questioned as well as searched. I do not know the outcome to this.

In the future I will only bring travelers checks.

I'm still trying to figure out how he got the pin number. It's a 4 digit number and he had plenty of time when we were out on excursions or at port.

I foolishly did not change the pin after I suspected the first loss.

I have never has this happen. I travel to Vegas, Atlantic City, really everywhere, and I always use the room safe and never questeded it's safety until now.

I don't want any lectures on "why did I bring so much in cash." Like I stated, I had my personal reasons.

If however anybody has any constructive answers to get results from the cruise line, I would be thankful.

Thanks,

Al

Thanks everyone for sharing what you've done with your computer while traveling.

Yeah, I'm more concerned about leaving it in a hotel room than I am in a ship cabin.

Good ideas about stowing it out of sight. Thankfully the room will be small enough I shouldn't forget where I hide it...unlike when hiding things at the Bermuda Triangle...er, I mean home :D

Think I'll look into getting one of those locks uppitycats mentioned. I'm such a worry wart that it'd probably be a good thing to have on hand.

Toyz711, thanks for posting the safe picture. That is one BIG safe! What category of room was that in?

I've only sailed in inside cabins on NCL/NCLA and inside and one oceanview on Carnival, so maybe the safes in these rooms are smaller??? On the Dawn we'll be in a balcony.

Thanks again for the tips .

I will keep my thoughts to myself about people who travel with $2K in cash going on vacation. Especially today in such a cashless society.

There is just no need, even with bad credit you can still make other arrangments such as pre paid debit cards, travellers cheques etc.

It was my understanding that only the FBI could investigate shipboard crimes??

I'm not certain, but that was always my understanding. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone here will be happy to correct me. :D

We've taken a laptop many places and have never had a problem, but like many of the others, we put it in an empty suitcase and out of sight/eye range. You know, we heard the same type of reports at a resort we've been to many times, despite almost everyone else saying they accidentally left money, electronics and all sorts of tempting valuables out with no theft. I guess it happens, but I doubt many people would risk their job for a few hundred dollars.

I would think money is more apt to be stolen than a laptop because EVERYONE has money, but a laptop would be hard to hide if it came down to a search. Has anyone been on a cruise where it seemed they were searching for a missing item?

The evil side of me wonders if the spouse could have perhaps hit the casino or on board shops? :)

I wouldnt worry about it...just put it in your closet on the ship or under the bed with your luggage,

When I am in a hotel..I usually just leave it out on the desk...I have never had a problem.

the safe was in a balcony room, deck 9, in the NCL spirit. the safe is about 6 inches high and (maybe) 10 wide?

Hhmmm, that sounds like the same size in the rooms we've been in. Maybe it is the light color of the safe.

Either way, too small :(, so we'll do as all of you do with yours - hide out of sight and use a lock if surroundings seem to warrant the use of one.

On the subject of that missing money thread, I'm also of the mind that the spouse may have taken some of it for whatever reason. Cash, in my experience, gets kind of hard to keep track of at times when doing a quick stop at the cabin then running off for activities, dining, excursions, etc.
