Air New Zealand FLights

You really do not think it is worth upgrading to premium economy? Boy will I be agravated after paying all the money!
Premium economy seats are always worth some extra money, IMHO.

The only economy seat combination that is quite close to a pair of premium economy seats is two people in a row of three economy seats in a bulkhead row on a day flight. And even then, I would have marginally preferred the premium economy seats, only it wouldn't have been worth the £300 pp that would have been needed on that flight.

These are the sorts of considerations that go into the equation.

Whether you get better food and drink is an airline-specific question. Others may be able to help with that.

From Air New Zealand's web site, concerning Pacific Premium Economy:

"Experience the very best of in-flight dining in Pacific Premium Economy on long-haul flights, enjoying a unique New Zealand dining experience designed by our team of consultant chefs:

  • Premium New Zealand wines and 42 Below cocktails
  • In-flight menus developed by our team of consultant chefs featuring New Zealand's finest produce
  • Crockery and cutlery uniquely designed for Air New Zealand
  • Self-service refreshment areas offering essentials like drinks and snacks throughout your flight
  • Please note food and beverage service on short-haul international flights between New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands is the same as provided in Pacific Economy"

From that, I would fully expect that you will receive the same meals as Business Class on long-hau flights.
