No lives have been lost but still..

this incident

will cost Viking Ocean Cruises a small fortune!

I know this may sound stupid but don't you think they have more options than a helicopter evac

Fly in some techs to fix the problem

Get two or three ocean tugs and pull the boat out of harms way

The only thing that would be a game changer is maybe they have contaminated fuel that has ruined the generators (water in fuel and they are done)

I heard on the news that they got more engines running and moved it farther out to sea, but were planning on continuing the evacuations by helicopter.

Glad that no one was hurt.  I'm a sailor of a small 30' sailboat ... and not having my engines working in these kinds of seas if we were caught out in this weather ... scary!

The investigation found the reason for power loss was inadequate oil available to the engines causing auto-shutdown. For a sea going ship this sort of error is both dangerous and unforgiveable. I would imagine the engineering and command crew are out of a job today.

Just read a Norwegian news report (in English) from passengers who have returned to the USA.  They had to be airlifted.  Windows broke in public rooms where people were evacuated to.  Flooding in these areas occurred.  These people were very thankful for the calm and care they received from staff and the Norwegian people.  Thank God there have been no casualties.

Why would ANYONE book a cruise on a ship in March (-WINTER-) that sails off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Norway?    And how irresponsible of this cruise line to even schedule one there at this time of year.

Probably the same mindset why they sail year round during Hurricane season in the Caribbean .. $$$$

This was my initial thought too.

I live on Barbados, in the Southern Caribbean

where people have no idea

how very calm our seas are, generally

during the peak months of Hurricane Season

i.e. Aug-Sept-Oct.

FLAT they are.

Unless a weather system comes along

-with days and weeks warning ahead of time,

re. said Wx system developing and where it's headed,

and therefore how to avoid it,

and  continue sailing the the annual calmest time of year!!
