  1. I don't think thats the case. I think he just used it while onboard through MCP and ran up a crazy bill for everything. It does not take long. The $10 per day plan listed in your post does not apply onboard Princess period.

I don't think the case either, but the OP mentioned that cellphone use was at ports. I think the OP had a free for all using the phone onboard, and is blaming someone else for their indiscretion, or just embarrassed for the mistake.

Like I said 225 GB is a LOT of data to use at ports where you are in port for 10-12 hours, and most Northern Europe cruises have 5-9 ports per cruise.

  2. Here's an interesting read taken from the AT&T site.

    AT&T International Day Pass

    $10/day

Take your talk, text, and data plan to over 100 countries for a low daily fee. Pay the daily fee only for the days you use abroad.

Get unlimited calls within International Day pass countries and back to the U.S. and unlimited texts to the world at no additional charge.

Now staying connected while abroad is simpler than ever. Add to each device once and it’s available whenever you travel in included international countries.

Just a heads-up. If you have apps running in the background that use data, you’ll be charged the daily fee. All you need to get started is a Mobile Share plan or an AT&T Unlimited plan.

Ready to plan your trip? We'll recommend an international travel option for your situation.

Usage Restriction: If international voice, text, or data usage exceeds 50% of total voice, text, or data usage for two consecutive months, this feature may be removed. Stream Saver: If your domestic plan includes Stream Saver, it will apply to your international package or feature.

I think the restriction kicked in from AT&T not Princess, as most people don't use 225 GB of data on their phones in regular use in 2 months.

From my experience dealing with CS agents in the past, one company will always blame the other when the customer is on the phone with them complaining.

  3. Watching movies or TV shows on Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for eachstream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video, the Op was billed $2K. Roughly 225 GB.

that would make it 225 hours of SD video, or 75 hours of HD video (unlikely) on the cruise. It is not possible to use that much data.

  4. Thanks for the clarification.

You use Skype on flights "all the time"? So you are one of the culprits for the internet not working very fast on flights :D

actually on flights the wifi is different than on ships. The allocate a block of bandwidth per IP address assigned, not sharing the overall bandwidth from the satellite. As normally there is only a limited few using the service, I like to open up a hotspot and allow others to connect with my account also ;p

iMessage and apps like whatsapp/Skype and others are great for texting with minimal bandwidth usage.

  5. I am curious how you received phone calls and texts when your phone is on airplane mode. Airplane mode turns off the cell service. You must have an amazing phone :D. WVBill and I have never heard of such a phone in airplane mode that receives phone calls. That is why airlines require phones to be in airplane (duh!) mode during a flight so that it prevents phones from sending or receiving texts or phone calls or trying to access cell towers.

Phone in airplane mode "ON", wifi mode "on"

apple phones allow txt messages between iphones through servers. you can also make voice and video calls via an app like whatsapp, or Skype. Use it on flights all the time

on WestJet it is WestJet connect https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/about-us/contact-us/faqs/westjet-connect

on Air Canada its Gogo Wifi https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/fly/onboard/wi-fi.html

  6. Easiest way to solve the issue. Airplane mode with wifi active

also I travel in the lower mainland BC area (Canada) all the time, and I get my cell hijacked all the time by AT&T instead of my Bell Mobility network when I go a mile further south toward the USA.

Why? because in your "network selection" on your phone settings most people have it set to "automatic". At this setting the phone will automatically lock onto the best signal it can find.

I found to stop the hijacking, turn the "automatic" setting off. Now you get to select the network you want.

Usually on cruise ships the little icon will say "MCP or WMS" instead of AT&T, Verizon, Bell, Rogers, etc... That indicates you are on the ships cellular network.

The OP made the mistake, and is now blaming Princess for the error. Especially for 223GB of data on a phone.

    Here's some more reading for you;

  7. I booked my flights from Edmonton (Canada) and liked being able to make free changes/cancellations up to 45 days to the departing flight. Prices fluctuated, over a few months, and saved an additional $150 before the 45 day limit.

  8. All you would have to unpack is the camera bodies and flashes I assume, as they state in the article, "The TSA just announced that all electronics larger than a cell phone need to be placed into a bin for separate screening."

My last few flights recently, the only lens they seemed concerned about at all checkpoints was the 150-500 I brought along. The seemed only to zero in on the lens only, nothing else.

  9. I'm not sure when your trip is, but I would grab a hotel now as NYC prices hardly ever go down!! Once you have a booking, then you can watch for a better deal

I already have a booking through hotels.com in midtoen, but hav a few airbnb's I am actually cosidering too.

now to decide on a broadway show for the other half
