  1. The "standard operating procedure" here is to bring your own case of water to the port with a luggage tag taped to it. NCL's package will be nearly ten times more expensive.

We brought a case of water on board, we used one of our luggage tags and they brought it to our room.

The catch is that it counts as a suitcase. NCL policy is that you can only bring one carry on and two suitcases on board per person. Not two suitcases and a case of water. We checked with our travel consultant.

This was not an issue for us because my DH and I only had one carryon and one suitcase pp. My DB was traveling with us. All of his family had a carry on and two suitcases each. We used one of our extra luggage tags so that they could also have a case of bottled water. DB carried his case to his room from our room.

In the end, we did not use all of our water. There is plenty of water and other fluids on the ship to drink. The only time we used the water was to take on excursions. We left our leftover water with our DS who is working on the Getaway.

  2. We were on this same cruise. LOVED the MDQ! Interesting to know that they used the Burn the Floor singer to understudy. Does the rest of the MDQ cast perform or have other jobs during the other days of the cruise? It's a waste of good talent otherwise!

I hope they keep this show running for a long time. I praised them in our survey we received. Excellent choice for entertainment on board!

So happy you liked the show! My son plays Carl Perkins (who plays lead guitar in the show) He is also the understudy for the Burn the Floor singer. DS is also the Stage Captain for MDQ which comes with a whole set of responsibilities. As far as playing anywhere else on the ship, he is not required to do so at this time that I am aware of.

Thank you for the good comments to NCL! Very important!

  3. I just got off the Getaway yesterday. We loved Million Dollar Quartet. The performers were great and I wanted them to keep performing. I also went to Burn the Floor, which I enjoyed, but I found myself checking my watch after about 45 minutes. I checked my watch at Million Dollar Quartet and it had been an hour and fifteen minutes and I was hoping it was going to keep going.

We heard a rumor from another guest that Elvis had an incident and so the Elvis understudy was performing on our cruise. I don't know if that is substantiated or not.

Regardless, they were all great. I enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, Ben who plays Elvis did sprain his ankle. He will be out for a week or so. I am so happy to know that the understudy (the male singer for Burn the Floor) did a great job! It has been a stressful time for the MDQ cast, but they are professionals and the show must go on! Kudos to NCL for recognizing the need for understudies! I hope and pray nothing else happens for the rest of their contract!

  4. We saw the show when it was on the Escape and it was great. However, the show had a poor track record of cancellations on the Escape (and that comment comes from the production team on the Escape) without understudies. Injuries and illness caused the show the cancel leaving the cruise staff to scramble for alternate entertainment. When they installed the show on the Getaway, they were suppose to have understudies or alternate primary performers (which means the performance may be a little less consistent if they are alternating between performers).

They did get understudies on the Getaway. They are not going to use the understudies unless someone gets sick or hurt. They are not going to alternate performers.

  5. Shorts can be worn in all restaurants except the main MDR and Le Bistro (I believe that's it on the Getaway). And, whereas I couldn't speculate on a percentage of guests wearing them, shorts are worn by many of the guests frequently. If you wear shorts, you won't be noticed as an exception.

It is also long pants and closed shoes for guys in Ocean Blue as well.

  6. We were on the same cruise! It was our first time on Norwegian and I have to say I really liked it. Like you, I loved the coconut pastries on the Flamingo Grill and our experiences seemed to be pretty similar. Like you, we loved Costa Maya and our least favorite port was Roatan. Million Dollar Quartet was unbelievable. I'm not much into musicals and whatnot, but that performance was amazing.

As for some of the questions on here people have asked, some of which have been answered and some of which not:

Yes, beach towels are in the room and you can take them off the ship.

The bars weren't too crowded, even with the UBP. There were a few times the bar staff was overwhelmed with a big rush of people, but for the most part I found it pretty easily accessible no matter where I was at.

Comedy shows do change. They alternated between a couple of comedians and some nights used the area for the Howl at the Moon performances.

We did not use the self departure option. We chose the 9:00 AM disembarkation and were off the ship, retrieved our bags, went through customs, and were in our car by 9:30. One of the staff told us to go ahead and line up at around 8:45, so in 45 minutes we got through all of it. By far the quickest process I've ever had on a cruise ship.

Thank you! So excited about MDQ! They are getting rave reviews!

  7. Ok, you convinced me. I booked us for the MDQ. If it's not everything you all said it is, I may afterward be prompted to have a fancy drink or two to cheer myself up. Never mind, I'll probably do that either way. ;-)

You won't be disappointed! It ran in Chicago for 7 years and audiences loved it! I will love it and will be having the drinks as well!

  8. Oh my goodness yes they play their own instruments! That's what makes the show so good! My son is playing Carl Perkins. He has been playing guitar for years as well as doing musical theater. I am so glad to hear that you all enjoyed it! They have been working hard in rehearsal and were so excited to finally perform the show!

  9. Thanks ya'll! They got standing O's for all four shows this past weekend! The cast is so excited! I talked to my son today and he is loving it! Can't wait till May 29! Enjoy the show! He also told me that Burn the Floor is fantastic as well. I have not yet signed up for that show, but I will be sure to now! Cheers!
