  1. Well said. Better sometimes to just leave things alone. Facts don't matter in this thread.

I'm fine with the increased gratuity. And have every confidence that it goes to the right people. They deserve what they get plus some.

Facts do matter. That's why believing everything that the company spokesperson says is like asking the serial killer if he did it. JH is paid good money to parrot the official company line. Would you expect anything else from him?

  2. I have no issue with how much stewards make. I am interested in the math of $3.70 (more with the increase) X number of people in the room X number of rooms serviced plus extra tips minus guests who remove tips ONLY because I want to know if it's realistic that the stewards and their assistances are actually receiving all that money.

It's good to be Arnold and Christine. ;)

  3. If my math was correct I figure that with the $12.95 tip rate the room steward is getting around $4.15 per room per day. At 20 rooms that's about $83 a day for some seriously long hours. Would you do it? Probably not. Be grateful that they do.

That's per person, per room and they now claim to be doing about 35 rooms a day. That number is probably closer to $350-$400 per day, without actually breaking out my calculator. At that rate, even if they split the tips in half with a helper, that's $6000 a month apiece.

For you math whizzes, I based that on 3 to a cabin. ;)

  4. How many threads are you going to post this on?

How about sticking to the topic instead of critiquing other's posts? You spend all of your time arguing with other's opinions, questioning their motives, casting doubt on their cruising history and generally don't add much to the conversation. 17,000 non posts.

  5. LOL! Kevin, that exact thing happened to me a few years ago, it was so embarrassing! I had to have our cabin steward come in and vacuum up all the black rubber in the carpet of our cabin, so I didn't get too far. Those shoes ended up in the trash that night too. :) To this day, I wonder why that happened, and they were NOT cheap shoes.

Funny that we both had the same crazy shoe experience.. :D

Do they swab the decks with acid?

  6. Doesn't bother me.

#1. Doesn't affect any of my upcoming sailings straight through to 2018. All are already pre-paid and it doesn't go into effect for my August sailing.

#2. I would have given that much additional at least anyway. And I still will.

Alot of people really get up in arms over tips. But I don't sweat it in the least. I would be fine if they added them into the price of the fare with no ability to immediately remove them.

If they added them into the fare, you'd have to pay tax on it. You really don't want that. And your sentiments are exactly what enables them to keep raising rates and making cuts. They'll keep jacking up prices and making cuts until they get some pushback. Then they'll know that they've reached the threshold of what their market will bear, and stop.

  7. I don't think they have would have less work in that scenario because once a day isn't really half the work, but you're right that they would end up with a lot more money in tips. That is exactly what makes me question the idea that the entire amount specified by Carnival as being for "stateroom services" is actually going into the stewards' pockets.

There might be an unspoken "administrative fee" for Carnival to manage the tip pool. That might explain the mysterious "alternate services" portion of the tips. ;)

  8. We see things a little different. While I agree with you that Carnival is moving toward once a day service I disagree with making more for doing less. The room stewards are now assigned more staterooms to service.

If one steward can do 10 rooms twice per day then if you cut to once per day steward could do 20 rooms thus eliminating an employee. One less person to feed and house.

I am aware room steward often have 20 or more staterooms. I used the 10 to 20 only as an example.

My thoughts are this. They were doing 20x2. Now if they go to once a day and they are doing 35x1, they have less work, but they collect the tips from 15 additional cabins. A huge raise and 5 less services.

  9. It is nice to see that the Vista will have 2 outlets as well as 2 USB ports. Now if the next ship had additional outlets near the bed-------

There's a dude that has an outlet gallery on his website. He will be so upset that you scooped him. LOL

  10. Didn't John Heald specifically address this rumour on his Facebook last week? Pretty sure he said this was absolutely not true. Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia, remember that literally anyone can publish literally anything to Wikipedia.

Yes he did, and yes they can.

  11. I would bet that salaries are equivalent. That line about subsidizing salaries is hogwash from my point of view (oops did I say hog, I am sure he will chip in with some anti tipping points now). More likely it is people not tipping that brought it on.

You remind me so much of my mom. Always expecting and seeing the worst in people. Its very sad.
