  1. Assuming you won't get hit with roaming charges in foreign ports. If you are stopping in Mexico and have AT&T, be sure to activate the free Mexico roaming on each phone (1gb of data, I believe, for free).

True. Wouldn't want to incur huge roaming charges to catch a Pikachu. My next cruise stops in Puerto Rico and St Martin so no worries for me except in Nassau.

  2. Hi, this is a urgent question for my kids, (and for myself).

We are due on the Oasis of the Seas today. Can we catch pokemons out at sea (Caribbean), and are there any pokestops on the ship?

    Thanks

Pokestops are tied to a specific geographic location so there is no possibility of one on a moving ship. Pokemon, possible but unlikely. Look for both while in ports.

  4. This information is based on my use of the iOS version of the app. I assume the two apps work similarly but there could be some differences. If you notice a difference in the Android app (or any errors in my information) please feel free to share that difference here.

    What is Periscoping?

Periscope (aka scoping) is a live streaming app, owned by Twitter, that allows users to share and watch live video broadcasts from your mobile device. Many cruisers choose to use periscope to share small snippets of their cruise with their friends, family and fellow cruisers.

How do I get started watching or broadcasting cruising periscopes?

    1. Download the Periscope app at one of the following links:

    iOS download

    Android Download

    2. Create a Periscope account. This can be accomplished in the app using either your cell number or your twitter logon.

    3. Find users to watch. This can be done by selecting one of the trending scopes on the main page or the People page, or by tapping on one of the scopes on the map in the "globe" page (zoom in, there are many many more than you see at the initial zoom level). Note that live broadcasts have red dots and archived broadcasts have blue dots. And finally, you can add specific users to follow. To do this tap on either the globe or people icon at the bottom and then tap on the magnifying glass at the top left. If you want to follow other cruisers you can find the user names of upcoming cruisers in this thread. When you add specific user names you can get notified when they are broadcasting. Controlling these notifications is handled in the settings page (tap button at the top right in the People page to find settings).

    4. Share your cruise!!! To do a broadcast of your own tap the broadcast icon at the bottom (3rd button from left). Before you start the broadcast be sure to enter a short description of what you are going to show. If you are on a cruise ship be sure to include the ship name in that description.

    Who can see my periscope?

Depends on how you set it up. We are hoping you are willing to share your cruising scopes with everyone so we can get our cruising fix. If you must limit who sees your scope there are settings so that you can share with only specific people, please see the periscope.tv website for instructions on doing this, but we are hoping you will be willing to share with all of us.

Can I talk to the person doing the periscope?

Yes! If you are watching a live periscope there is a box at the bottom where you can type in questions and comments for the broadcaster (or other viewers). If you are watching an archived broadcast you will not be able to comment or ask questions.

If I am broadcasting do I have to read the comments or respond to them? Do I have to talk at all?

While we hope you will chat with us and answer our questions, it certainly is not required. Some people are more comfortable talking in a broadcast than others. If you don't say a word we will be happy just seeing the broadcasts from the ship.

What are all of those hearts on the screen?

THose are from the viewers showing their love for the broadcast. To show your love just tap on the screen and a heart will show up in the color assigned to your username when you joined the broadcast.

What if there is a rude or obnoxious user sending inappropriate comments?

Simply tap on one of the comments (before they fade out) and either block that user. If you are a viewer you can also report them basically the same way, and the obnoxious user will no longer show up on your screen.

How do I reply to another viewer?

While there is no support for private messages, you can tap on a user comment (as in the previous question) and then tap on Reply. THis will put that username at the front of your next comment so the other user knows it is directed to them.

I found a periscoper that isn't on the list. How do I share that?

Tap on the small silhouette at the bottom right and you will find a Share button. You may have to scroll down the page a little to see it. Tapping this will send a notification to everyone who follows you to check out the broadcast. Later be sure to drop in here and tell us about it so we can add it to the list.

I read something about adding #save to the end of my scope description. What does that do?

That was the way you could save your periscope for longer than a 24 hour period. THis is no longer needed, the app by default permanently saves the broadcast. If you don't want it saved you can change that in the settings,

How do I end the broadcast?

Yes, you need to end the broadcast. We had one broadcaster continue her broadcast from inside her purse. It made for a fun time for the viewers commenting on what was happening or what could happen. To end the broadcast simply swipe down on the screen and tap Stop Broadcast.

    Have additional questions?

Feel free to ask here, or go to the periscope website at https://www.periscope.tv

First and foremost, have fun with it! Nobody expects you to be a professional broadcaster. If you want to connect with other cruise periscopers you can do so here, or you might consider joining the Faceb00k group Royal Caribbean Periscopers.

  5. What is a periscoper?

Periscope is a live streaming app for both iPhone and Android. We've had quite a few people on cruises streaming live video from their cruise. During the stream viewers on the app can enter comments or questions to the broadcaster which they can answer by voice. The app will also allow you to watch archived broadcasts. Links to the apps below.

  7. I decided to follow Kat's format and break down the periscope list to one month at a time to keep it more manageable and keep the threads a little shorter. If you plan to try periscoping on a cruise this month (or some time in the near future) drop a post in this thread and I will add you to this list or a future list.

You can also join Kat's Facebook group "Royal Caribbean Periscopers" and post your information there and I will add it to the list here.

  10. On the same topic, we have one vegetarian in our group next month. I know they always gave some items in the MDR and Windjammer, but we have a meal at Giovanni's included in our package. I was looking at their menu and they have a symbol at the bottom for vegetarian but none of the items on the menu show that symbol. Does anyone know if there are some dishes there that can be prepared as vegetarian if requested?

  14. Haven't tried this yet, but I did a search and found another workaround.

    Go to Airplane Mode

    Turn back on WiFi

    Open the Compass app

Evidently opening the Compass app (with WiFi turned back on) re-enables the gps radios. It appears to work, the compass app is showing my coordinates, but haven't tested it with Find my Friends yet. Will try tonight at work when I have some people to test with and see what happens.
