  1. They have these pull down bunks from the side wall on other ships. I remember one on the Emerald, E512 (OV-OB) where my DD and SIL kept hitting their head, since those cabins weren't quite as wide as these sideways Royal cabins. But I notice the Princess website doesn't note whether the uppers come out of the ceiling or out of the sidewalls. Could be a nasty surprise.

  2. Thanks to your review and the pictures you included, I started a new thread for people who want to know how the beds are configured in an obstructed cabin. It should still be on the first page. Until I saw your pics I had no idea some had the beds against the wall. I don't know how to get your pics on to my thread, but I think it would be so helpful there.

Would you mind putting them there with the ship, cabin number and date of your cruise? That would be wonderful!

    Thanks.

    Eileen

  3. The reason I'm asking for the date of the sailing is because when I started this pursuit I called Princess. Love Princess cruises, but hate the fact that they can't answer questions like we are discussing here.

I said they need to update their website and at least show how the cabins are really configured. I realize they aren 't going to do what Theo has done for us. All she could tell me is that sometimes they reconfigure the cabin during dry dock and they wouldn't want to have to change their site when that happens. Don't know if this is true, but apparently she had a call from someone after returning from their cruise, who always booked the same cabin and were furious that "their" cabin had changed.

  4. Eileen...thanks for starting this informative thread & agree that adding the upper bunk info would also be helpful. :

A week from today we'll be in quad room (E501) on the Golden Princess & will post it's configuration. Being a quad it will most likely be against the window & hopefully the upper bunks will be recessed into the ceiling and not protruding from the side walls. :(

    Hi Frank,

Really appreciate everyone's input. I'm so happy I thought of something useful to others on these boards. I've been helped so much since I joined years ago.

    Have a wonderful cruise.

  5. Good to see another list maintainer here. This is part of what we can do for each other on Cruise Critic.

Recently Neptune Seas created the Maitre D' list and I seem to have adopted the Cruise Director list maintenance.

Although we have no way to sticky the lists as long as they stay reasonably active the list can be easily found in the first few pages of topics. I bump the Cruise Directors list every so often by adding the latest updates to the master list.

    Hi Terry,

Thank you for doing your list. I look at it frequently and find it very helpful. I hope this list will be helpful as well.

  6. I find the Travelocity website deck plans more accurate and easy to use. I am one that does NOT like the square under the window layout, I prefer the longway against the wall layout. Sometimes the layout can't be helped depending on the class of ship. Keep in mind also that some ships in the same class will likely be the same.

I took your suggestion, and this where the frustration is. On the Grand they show the picture of the obstructed category with the bed under the window, which I now know is not always accurate. So even the Travelocity site doesn't have it right.

  7. Okay' date=' I'm not Theo or Dave who do an incredible job for all of us which we all appreciate so much. However, I have found a need and would like to fill it. Now that we are going to be booking obstructed cabins I was wondering if some had the beds against the side wall as opposed to under the window. Frankly, I didn't even know that option existed until a post was made with pictures showing it on the Star. Sooo....

If you have been in an obstructed cabin and the beds were on the side wall, please list the ship and cabin number and how recently you sailed, and I will keep track of it. Once we have a good size list we will figure out a way to give you access to the list so you don't have to remember this thread. I have some ideas on how that can be done.

Also, if you know of some good balcony obstructed cabins, mention that as well and I will keep that list separate.

Keep in mind the floor plans on Princess site are useless, they use a generic picture which obviously is not accurate.

Sapphire & Diamond Princess Emerald deck obstructed view cabins -- under the window

FYI, I've found that with the bed under the window, the view is less important than noise. Cabins on either side of a fire door have a metal strip in the floor in the hallway and every time a cart or room service rolls over the strip, there's banging and rattling. After having E701 on the Sapphire in January, I had booked the same cabin for my March 1 cruise so when I got home, I immediately changed it. All I really need is light and can live without the rattling from the wee hours of the morning.

That's a great tip, Pam. How would one know where the fire doors are by looking at the deck plans? Is it every door down the hallway?

  9. If I was booking an Alaskan cruise I would choose a covered aft balcony. I would also do the open balcony/Television thing to hear announcements.....:):):)

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

Yes, we had a balcony on Emerald deck and it was perfect:):)

    Regards to Holli,

  11. On the Sapphire, the beds are under the window and the Diamond is her sister ship. So, I can say with certainty that the bed(s) are under the window, not against the side.

Maybe Theo can be persuaded to add comments to his website that would include whether the bed is against the wall or window.

I emailed Theo the other day before I even saw this post and suggested it. He liked the idea but is busy with the Royal pictures right now. If people wanted to give their input on their experience, I'd be happy to keep a running list and maybe Theo can just add it later when he has time. I don't want to hijack this thread, I think I'll start a new one and see what comes of it.

    (see you soon:))

  12. We got a covered balcony which came in handy on rainy days. Also, we were able to hear all announcements on our balcony by keeping our balcony door open and having our TV on the ship channel. If whales were spotted, or the naturalist was speaking we heard it just fine. We did also move around the ship though. We figured out how,to spot the whales through our wide angled binoculars which was suggested on Cruise Critic, and saw whales every day during our back to back. Loved Alaska. Enjoy your cruise.

  13. Hope someone has the answer to this:

Diamond Princess - Oceanview cabins on Emerald Deck (obstructed, etc.)

Is the head of the bed under the window or on the wall? I'm trying to find one with the bed on the wall, not under the window, for motion issues.

The illustrations on the Princess website just say that "Your stateroom's view will differ from what is shown here."

So far it looks like any oceanview cabin that will accommodate 4 people, the head of the bed is under the window. But if a cabin only holds 2, will the bed be along the wall on the Diamond? (That was our experience in obstructed OVs on the Grand.) Right now we're looking at E633 or E409 or similar on the Diamond.

If anyone knows, or knows how we can find out for certain, we'd really appreciate the info.

    Thanks!

Hello. I don't know the answer to your question, but what you said about your cabin on the Grand intrigues me. We are going on the Grand to Hawaii and this is the first time in an obstructed cabin. Someone posted recently a picture of an obstructed cabin on the Grand, Emerald Deck, and the bed was on the side wall. I was trying to see if our cabin was configured that way too so I called Princess. Can I just say our Cruise Critic friends know more answers than Princess? They didn't have a clue, even after calling other departments. So I ask you, what cabin were you in on the Grand where the bed was on the side wall? We have E517 and I would love it if it was that way. We're going to keep our cabin, but I'm so curious.

I wish we could compile a list of obstructed cabins on different ships that have the bed on the side wall. I know about the site for the views from the obstructed cabins, now I'm on a quest like you are.

I hope you get an answer to your question.

    Thanks.

  14. Dave, it's so wonderful to see you posting about the Regal. I look forward to every moment.

Dave, you always seem to have pictures to cover whatever people ask of you. I was wondering if there us a site where you have them compiled other than finding them on your threads. Like the guy who has a blog for the obstructed cabins that is so helpful. Do you know where pictures of cabins on different ships can be accessed? Like good inside cabins or certain cabins are larger than others, etc. Figure if anyone would know, it would be you.

    Thanks.

  15. Thank you so much for your review and especially your pictures. We are doing a Bon Voyage next month which we are really looking forward to.

Seeing these pictures are really interesting to me because we are, for the first time, getting an obstructed view cabin for our trip to Hawaii. I didn't think the obstructed view windows were ever to the side of the bed like this configuration. This is perfect. Also, I'm confused about the layout. I spent the better part of the day Sunday looking at obstructed view cabins and all the pictures I saw showed the cabins in the same configuration as the inside cabins only slightly larger. The window was always behind the bed. This cabin looks like a balcony cabin with a window instead of the balcony. The desk is alongside the same wall as the bed.

So, if anyone has suggestions for how to figure out the mystery of finding a good partially obstructed cabin, and obviously the pictures Princess has on their site are inaccurate, I would greatly appreciate your advice. I did look at the site with pictures of insides, and until now, thought I found a good cabin.

Also, are there ever any balconies that have good partially obstructed cabins?

  16. The key to avoid hitting someone is to keep the knob that controls how fast it will go to the lowest point when entering an elevator and when riding amongst crowds. I did practice in places where they had them for customers, and the ones you rent are even easier. Also be aware she should not make any sharp turns. It will really help her to enjoy independence on the ship. I do something that makes light of it and is always a big hit on the ships. I make a sign for the from and back of the scooter, which I attach with ribbon. It says Warning! Student Driver. I've done this for years now because I get such a kick out of people laughing when they see the sign. It's a crowd pleaser.

As,for the tours, I've been able to do any of the tours I wanted to do. If I can't get to something, I just wait and my husband takes pictures for me.

  17. I use a mobility scooter and they don't let you take them on the tenders anymore. With the scooter your mom can enjoy the ports on the Hawaii cruise, except for Maui. The Princess tours will accommodate the scooter. I have the same circumstances as your mom. I can walk, just not very long and I walk very slow. We've done the full transit Panama Canal and Hawaii, and I've enjoyed both. Don't hesitate to get her a scooter. It is a life saver on a cruise when you have limitations, and she will really be able to enjoy herself. They are very easy to maneuver.

  18. I chose a balcony over the deluxe balcony because I like the extra space in the desk, with more drawers, which have been eliminated on one side to make room for the couch. We don't sit around our cabin and when we watch tv at night we do so from bed so never miss the couch. YouTube has some good videos of the deluxe balcony cabin and regular one. Compare them and see what is more important to you.

  19. Another example: a HAL tour in Tunesia. We were driven three hours to an oasis for a 3-hour camel ride in the desert. No bus, we were distributed to 4WD vehicles, four passengers per car. I was in the front seat next to the driver. He didn't speak English, played Arabic music and played with his privates for the whole drive. My friend in the back asked, "Is he doing what I think he's doing?" Yup. Pretty disgusting. When I got back on the ship, I went to the Shore Excursion Desk. Their only response was that this was the only time they were offering this tour so there was nothing they could do.

Pam, you're quite a gal and I look forward to seeing you again in March.

OP, if you, like us, enjoyed Princess enough to become Elite, like others have said, you might think about the fact that you are expecting too much under the circumstances.
