  1. That is so cooll J! Pierre Trudeau and his wife Margaret were our Canadian "Royalty". Trudeau Sr. was a bit of a firecracker and not everyone enjoyed that. :) I was a fan however! We're all hoping that Trudeau Jr. has his father's chops!

I had just married and moved to Canada...we were all wrapped up in Trudeau Mania! When we were living in Europe, we went to Germany to put our sons on a military flight to head home for school. Trudeau was on the same flight with his two sons. Who would have thought that one of them would grow up to be PM?

  2. You may want to contact the car service. They, surely, are aware of the situation at the airport and they may advise you as to what to do due to the long waits. I have been delayed and the company was aware that I would be and adjusted accordingly.

  3. I was on that same TA and I enjoyed it immensely. I had been on the same TA in 2015 and thought that the refurbishment prior to the 2016 crossing really perked the ship up. There is no doubt, she is an older vessel but to my way of thinking, a wonderful old girl! Looking forward to being onboard again.....

  4. I must admit that we always book when the new itineraries are released, often nearly 2 years ahead of sailing, and tend to book flights as they are released - ie 12 or 11 months in advance of the date. For example, we are flying Qatar in Jan to Cape Town. Had this been one of the cancelled voyages we would have 2 return flights to either use or lose along with the bookings we have made for Heathrow parking and in Cape Town pre-cruise. Of those expenses the only cancellable one isthe Cape town hotel. So ican imagine that, had we had our cruise cancelled, we would do more than just tut and blame qismat.

I suppose you could say that making individual arrangements well in advance is taking a risk. I don't agree - if I've booked and paid for a service I expect that service. If SS (or anyone else) enter into a contract to provide a service it's not really playing the game to change that contract unless the contractee is fully reimbursed for expenses incurred on the strength of the original undertaking. I know that they are not legally responsible for consequential loss; in my mind they should be.

Having said all that it's a money making machine and not a charity and we are alll old enough to know that the world ain't a fair place. I take these events as a warning that, under the smiles, bonhomie and aspirational promotional material, we are just pawns in the money making machine. Caveat Emptor?[/quote

Have you seen the Update on the Wind new thread that was posted this morning? It is so at odds with Col. Wes's posts on that same trip.]

  5. Thanks Penny, yes I agree. I was a bit saddened to see the childish name calling which seemed to me to be absolutely intended to be much more offensive than any opinion I exprssed or I said and the mods did the right thing to prune it.

I have a feeling that I have still have far too much to learn about pickling. Although I have had a sneaky shallott or three and they are already quite decent.

Today is crispy duck and some veggy.

My mouth is still watering for a doner kabab!!

  6. Reading some of the recent posts on this and other SS threads, and knowing that some posts have been removed, I think the shoe posts on Lois's thread re:30 some days to go, have been great fun! Most of the Water Cooler posts are informative or amusing or thoughtful and the pics...especially the pickles, have been great!

  7. Yes, I don't think that is alot.....I have read where some women bring 16 pairs.

When we were living in the former Yugoslavia, houseguests were expected and I had advised to expect a number of social events. They arrived with their luggage including one piece that contained nothing but her shoes, Fortunately, he was an airline captain so the number of bags and the weight did not apply. This was back in the day! She was a woman after my own heart!

  8. Penny, we did the November TA 2016 in the Spirit. We absolutely loved it. Are you doing this one?

I met people who commented on my shoes...and two were men. I felt soooo flattered! Glad you're having pretty shoes sent to you for the cruise...Shoes make a lady feel whole, don't you agree?

Absolutely I agree! My husband used to just shake his head and say "Oh, new shoes?"

i'm going on the Wind's TA. This will be my third in a row. Being a widow "Solo mi", the Wind suits me very well. I have met the loveliest people and I love sea days.

  9. So, so funny with this cute mention of Imelda Marcos. YES, good or bad, she was the "Shoe Queen". As the old saying goes, "If the shoe fits, wear it."

    THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Dozens of nice visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc. We are now at 226,623 views for this live/blog re-cap, including much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

For those so totally young to not be able to remember Imelda Marcos, here is a file photo of her from a quick Internet search. Like?:

Very good and yes, we can relate!! Penny

  10. Penny, I'm with you, girl! I take about eight pairs; usually two evening heels, mid-high wedge sandals in gold and silver for informal dresses, two pairs of flats, and two light but sturdy walking shoes. I do not use sneakers (tennis shoes in my vocabulary) and never have... and I do a lot a exercise...with rubber-soled ballet shoes. My goodness, what a shoe confession have you gleaned from me!

Love this post! I usually end of buying at least one new pair before a cruise...Friends are bringing down three new pairs for me later this month...in preparation for my Nov. TA. I have difficulty getting shoes that fit here in Mexico.....Oh yes, and they are a gold pair and a silver pair for evening..and a pretty wedge for informal dress......

  11. Whew, I am not alone! I have read many packing tips that say casual shoes for day, a dressy pair for evening and a pair for touring. I can't do that!! It just is not in my nature. I can be fairly sensible with clothes to pack that are mix and match, and can be dressed up or down. But shoes, never!!

    Penny

  12. My style of packing is like Spinnaker2. I have lists which I take on the cruise and make notes for future reference. I also make sure that I have some clothes that are a bit too big at the beginning of the cruise that should fit by the end of the cruise!

Will you please address the issue of SHOES for your cruise......

    Penny

  13. Lois, I salute you. I start packing at least two weeks before my flight. Good for you! For me, packing, unpacking and packing again is half the fun. Have a great cruise!

Because I live in Mexico, I was listed as Senora Penelope. I initially tried to change it, but it was on everything and now I love it!

  14. We who live in Europe are particularely fortunate because apart from the few times during the summer we've visited on cruises, all my trips have been winter, and Venice is really magical in the winter and particularly whne it rains or snows. When I worked for the corporation I had to spend some time out there organising conferences and stuff and later we had a couple of clients in the film industry and obviously friends in the music industry which gave us some good excuses to go for the festivals and keep our fingers crossed for them.

Venice is a magical place out of season and is a nightmare during it.

It is unfortunate when it is necessary to travel in summer months, Another perk of being retired because we can travel at other times. I especially like travelling in November. Barcelona was wonderful at that time last year.
