  1. On the Royal TA this spring, there was a lively group of cigar and ciggie smokers in Churchill’s. We got to be quite a little group, smoking, watching tv news, and trading stories about our travels and what not to miss.

I had my mini Cohibas with me and always stopped in a couple of times a day. All sizes, shapes and ages [emoji847]

We had people join us who did not even smoke. And when football is on, even better.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  2. I was on this cruise and I am aware of one Portuguese couple who were to disembark in Le Harve. She reported to me that Princess had rebooked their air flight return to their home in Madeira at no cost to them. She had no complaints about the service extended to them, in fact was quite complimentary about how it was handled.

I did not ask, but infer that they had booked thru ez air. Our conversation occurred within a couple of hours of the Captain’s announcement.

Obviously others did not experience the same service. I was not affected, however, in the future I will ask more questions and read contracts more carefully. I agree with prior posters that I no longer have the ability to drag luggage on and off trains, etc.

So sorry that many were stranded by Princess.

  3. Hi all

Heading off on a cruise originating in Palermo on the 10th April. Stops include Barcelona, Marseille, Valetta and Genoa. Normally by this point I have a packing list and the suitcases half full but I honestly don't know what to pack! Has anyone done a similar med cruise in early April?

I was originally thinking it would be high teens (which will seem practically tropical after the winter we've had), but my husband read somewhere that we are facing the 'coldest April in years' in Europe although that could have just been newspapers being sensationalist.

Help a stressed girl out... what should I pack?! Layers and hope for the best?

I always check the Weather Channel for their ten day forecast. It is not 100% accurate, but close enough.

I have found Rome and south are warm in the spring. Linen with light cotton sweater and maybe a light rain jacket worked for me.

  4. For hand made espadrilles, try La Manual Alpargatera. Go before 1:30pm or after 4:30pm. They are open until 8:00pm every night. I have not yet been there but have heard about them from other people and they are mentioned in Rick Steves Barcelona book. I'll be going there this fall. Check out their website. I believe they're in/near Barrio Gotic.

Awesome place......very busy. Got all the gals in my family espadrilles. Even my baby nieces. Darling children’s shoes. Was there May 2017.

  5. I just went to preorder some bottle water for my cruises and can't find it. I checked all 4 bookings and it's not there... did Princess get rid of that option?? It's under the onboard reservations - beverage packages?

Thank you a7.......always on the ball......

  6. It is cheap compared to buying by the bottle which is more than $2 with tip. If it's cost that is the driving solution here then perhaps they should have considered increasing the cost of the water package rather than outright eliminating it. Still would have been some squawking about it but at least it still would have been available to those of us who want or need to purchase it.

I agree....so convenient to have in room refrigerator without having to worry about it....

  7. I am in the planning stage for 2 - late 60 year old ladies for a stay in Rome pre cruise. I have never been to Rome before, a little lost with the information.

You should be back from your Rome stay.

Can you tell us about your hotel stay? Name, tourist places close by, walking distance to sights?

Name of any tours or websites i.e.: Vatican would be helpful.

    Any information would be helpful.

I have been to Rome three times, and each time stayed at a different hotel. These days I travel solo, generally, am of your generation and need to be a bit more careful with the distances I walk each day.

The last hotel I stayed in was the Albergo de Senato. This was in January of 2017. It was the best hands down of any hotel in Italy I have stayed in. It is on the same Square as the Pantheon and within walking distance of all the major sites in Rome. Trevi, Piazza Navona, Forum, Colosseum , major cathedrals. Lots of great restaurants nearby, and a short walk to Campo de Fiori.

The Vatican is a bit of a walk, but if you are in good shape done in 30 minutes. I walked there, but taxied back since I spent all day in the museums and St. Peter’s.

Rome’s hotels can be spotty, and prices generally dictate your experience. I do not know what your budget is, but there are several others I can comment on if you stay in the historic center.

I am going back pre-cruise in Sept. with someone who has never been to a Rome and I am considering the Senato especially since all the rooms have been renovated. Staff is very helpful, friendly and breakfast was excellent. The bathrooms with tubs are the largest I have found in Italy. The hotel has opened a sister hotel that I am also considering.

On checking the TripAdvisor site, it is now #10 in Rome. Guess I was ahead of the crowd (and will have to pay for it [emoji6])

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions. There are two more that I could mention if this one doesn’t sound good.

  8. What a great thread! For me the most important packing item is shoes. I have cranky feet and ankles and Europe, or any long trip on hard concrete floors make them a problem. I would urge you to take a look at Eddie Bauer’s website. The have my all time fave travel shoe on sale for $39.....

The name is stone. It is in ballet flat with rubber sole and great inner support. I wear them with slacks, crops and longer shorts. They need very little breaking in. They are sturdy enuf to hold up on wet cobblestones.

Highly recommend as they have been on at least a half dozen trips to Italy, Greece, Spain etc. A little bit more stylish than my go to Cole Haan sneakers.

    Have fun!

Sorry. Autocorrect......the style name is “Stine ballet”. Just ordered a pair in black. The grey is a great color too.

  10. The beverages usually come along with a VIP offer which includes a discounted or free cruise and multiple perks and events during the cruise. All of this would be specified in the mailer that you receive.

The casino rates are different and give you the discounted cruise rate but no other perks unless you gamble in which case they will likely give you a free drink or cabin goodies or even a dinner in a specialty restaurant if you're playing a lot. Gambling is optional though, there's no strings attached with the casino offers.

Thanks. As I get offers all sorts ways I wasn’t sure. I will read more carefully in future. Since I don’t drink a lot, not a huge deal. One of the hosts usually checks and offers.

I appreciate the clarification, tho. Happy sailing.

  11. Do not have to gamble at all. However, if the casino rate included beverages while gambling you do have to be at a table or machine in order to receive the free drinks. Cannot go up to the casino bar and order your own drinks for free.

I get casino offers all the time but have never checked beverage. How does one know if included? Is it explicit in offer.

  12. That’s good there will be a dry dock.

Does anyone know how I can get my status on Princess? I sailed multiple times as a kid with my parents, never as an adult. My last cruise was 2007. Should I call them? Would they be able to look up by my name to find how many cruises I’ve been on?

When you log into your account and check your Captain Circle account, you should have history. But, having said that, I am nor sure about children cruising with parents. Do kids get a Circle number? Princess would definitely know.

  13. My granddaughter and I sailed on the Regal in October 2017 in a mini-suite with an “angled balcony “ as Princess calls it. It was cabin B414.

I had the same concern that you had, but found it to be a wonderful location and enjoyed the extra balcony space. I did not find a privacy issue with the skywalk. I am not sure how private you would like your balcony to be, but for most cruisers I don’t think there would be a problem. Anyone on the skywalk would have to be looking directly down to see into the balconies. Of course, the higher the deck, the easier it would be. As far as the extended balcony, it afforded one person the ability to lie flat (ie sunbathe) on the larger end.

One note of caution, depending on which side the extension falls, it can be a little more difficult to look ahead as one must peer around the divider. So choose if you want to see where you were, or where you are going.

I would book it again “in a heartbeat”. I fact I have an angled balcony booked on a June Regal sailing in the Baltics.

Not sure if I have pics showing the balcony but if I do, will send.

    Happy cruising.

  14. I sailed on her two weeks May 2017 in the Med just after her inaugural sailing. It was my first cruise on Princess. She is a beautiful ship. Many long time cruisers were disappointed with the changes made in comparison to the Regal and Royal. I find the small changes on ships invigorating as I get bored with the same old thing every cruise.

The crew at the time was great and many In training. There was some spotty service in the buffet area. Room steward was excellent. Entertainment the best

    I have experienced.

I understand Captain Sagani is still on ship. The cruise director and most of his staff moved to the Regal a few weeks after it got to China. I saw them recently on the Oct. Canada sailing. So I have no idea who the director is now, I would assume someone who understands the culture and language of its cruisers.

I have deposits in Sept Oct for the So Pacific New Zealand cruises. The one factor that will cause me to cancel is the crew. I am concerned that communication may be difficult if Mandarin is spoken. I do not know if the crew is changed for the Australian portion. Otherwise, can’t wait to be on her again.

Any specific questions you might have? Too many details to give an answer that might be helpful to you. Also, I agree you might try the spring roll calls. There were a few folks that posted reviews. About 30% of the cruisers were from countries other than US, GB or Australia. Might account for lack of postings on CC?
