  1. Aaaargh!!!! The Shortline Bus --- a cut below even Adirondack Trailways. But yes, motel price increases have probably outpaced even USPS first class mail. Remember how Motel 6 got its name.
  2. Don't post things if you get upset if people happen to read, understand, and respond to them.
  3. For the strongest French attitude, you should go to St. Barth's
  4. LGA is probably closest, then JFK. From Boston, I would suggest you consider Amtrak, cheaper, gets you to within a couple of miles of cruise terminal, less subject to weather delays — and very little more time - considering check in tim at airport and getting to/from airport - plus ground transportation much cheaper.
  5. There are two - tied for first place. San Juan is a lovely old Spanish colonial city - a nearby tropical rain forest ---- then Sint. Maarten with its beaches and Caribbean flavor and delightful people --- adjoining the French flavored St. Martin.
  6. If by “nice” you mean a good place, right in the old city with parking, and just a few blocks from the cruise terminal, think about the Indigo Inn; if you mean inexpensive, check out the motels outside of the city.
  7. Very many Atlantic hurricanes (perhaps as many as 50%) never touch North America -- and there are no remnants of hurricanes in winter.
  8. Yes -- but for readers able to walk, it is the best way to experience the park --- riding in any sort of vehicle makes it simply a drive-by --- with little chance to see most of what makes it special --- even sadder than "doing" Rome on a bus.
  9. If ship arrives in Nassau at Noon, why would you think about a bus transfer at 11:45. And 12:15 sounds like a very close call.
  10. Still, the real gems: the Carousel, the Conservatory Pool with model sailboats, the zoo, the Shakespeare Gardens, Cleopatra's Needle, the Loeb Boathouse, the Bethesda Fountain, etc., etc., etc. all need to walked by to be noticed at all.
  11. Manhattan taxi drivers are unlikely to object to a short trip as long as it keeps him in a high traffic area -- actually the first fraction of a mile pays him better than any subsequent fractions, and two tips may very well exceed the amount of one.
  12. In what fashion is understanding "...how things work" is "...not what actually happened." Do you really believe that? Sometimes people do actually understand how things work -- and, of course, they sometimes do know why things happen.
  13. If you had noted (and retained) ANY of the vibes from his many posts, you would understand why Carnival occurred to him (and why a follow-up poster responded with Oceania). I happen to prefer Oceania for the quality experience (and true value) they offer, but bedbugs can be brought on board by the cruiser who complains about them -- as well as on to ANY ship of ANY line.
  14. Just north of Durham - on the east coast of England.
  15. Interesting to see a thread dedicated to" Mens Formalwear/Smart Attire" evolve into discussion of toilet terminology and womens shoes.
  16. Do you REALLY think that a good "...way to see Manhattan..." is from across the East River? Yes, you could find less expensive hotels in the outer boroughs or New Jersey -- but, if the point of the exercise is to see Manhattan, I suggest you stay IN Manhattan - and not spend several (perhaps many) of your hours in the area either riding time-consuming, perhaps dangerous, public transportation or Ubers - the cost of which could seriously bite into your savings on hotel room cost.
  17. Make your own sign - buy some little magnets to hang it.
  18. Talk it up with your friends and family - groups do not simply materialize, they are formed by people who want groups —- people like you. Even if you only know one or two people who might be interested, each of them might also know a couple who each know others. At the very least you would not be getting involved with a group of total strangers.
  19. I don’t think there have been any stables on the east side of Manhattan for a number of years- perhaps the last was the old Squadron A armory on Madison at 94th - which was taken down year ago. There are a couple on the far west side, way down town.
  20. Actually, two of the most prominent cities in the Caribbean: San Juan and Havana are worth touring.
  21. Perhaps on Med cruises stopping at Athens or Ephesus - evening odea productions of Sophocles’ works.
  22. And once, they succeed in banning horse drawn carriages, they will move against the concept of ownership of animals as pets. The lunatic fringe has no natural boundary.
  23. For Madeira the cable car up to Monte is a great way to see much of the island, then the small church at the top has the tomb of The last emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire - seeing the list of his titles alone is worth the ride (Emperor of Austrian, King of Hungary, Grand Duke of Bohemia, etc., etc., etc.) Then ride down the mountain in one of those wicker chairs on skids steered by the feet of your conductor.
  24. Which they will only be able to do if the required date had not been continually pushed back.
