  1. Actually I noticed the cruise ship arrives Athens at 4 am. So now I’m thinking we can leave ship early like 7 or 8 am, get a prearranged tour to acropolis and museum, then go to plaka, and watch sunset from that famous hill.

Then maybe next day take a tour to Cape Souinion and Poseidon Temple.

Based on my 2 night timeframe and early disembark from boat it’s looking this can be done. Thoughts?

  2. so we will be in Athens post cruise for 2 nights in Athens. Which means really only 1 day 1/2 of touring.

First the cruise ship I believe gets in at 7 Am, so assuming off ship by 10 can we get to Acropolis and Archeological museum and do them justice in that afternoon.

If so what would you recommend for 2nd full day in Athens.

Would really love 3 nights there but probably due to work can’t swing another day.

    Will appreciate all comments

  3. It is not you, they are somewhat high and are being booked up very fast!!!

Luckily we booked in April and the rate of our cabin has already increased by $200 per person.

Looks like 2019 will be a busy cruise year in Med.

Last year we were booked for a June 2018 Med cruise out of Rome but had to cancel and rebook for 2019. It was far easier last year to get your choice of cabins, plus the hotels in Rome and Athens were definitely cheaper.

  4. Have flown Alitalia twice to Italy from Miami. Don’t care for that airline.. stewards act like you are bothering them if you ask for even a glass of water, I would fly anyone else if you can. But again that was 10 years ago, perhaps things have improved.

  5. If you are interested in history and ruins and this is your first time to Italy, I don’t see how you can miss Pompei. So I’d recommend the Pompei/Amalfi combo . Pompei is amazing and you’ll also get to see the beautiful Amalfi Coast .

If not as much into ruins but more into just a picturesque day then I’d recommend you go to Capri for day, it’s lovely there you can go to blue grotto and see where the Roman Emperors vacationed at their palace with amazing views of Mediterranean Sea.

  6. Ive also stayed in Residenza in Farnese . Not fancy, but very good location. All rooms are different, I stayed in a standard double and it was fine, had a large bathroom. Staying again this Sept. Another hotel that I like is Hotel Villa Pinciana, close to the top of Via Veneto, near Borghese gardens. Even though way from your preferred sites, it doesnt take that much to walk to them. My experience is that prices go up as the date gets closer. June is a popular month, I would look to book now if the hotel is open to take reservations. If you see prices go down, you could always cancel and rebook (obviously, if you booked a fully refundable rate)

Wow.. if prices go up then I’m glad I’ve booked now just in case . I’ve booked the no prepayment no cancel fee so as you say if prices go down I could also cancel and rebook but I’m thinking Europe 2019 is going to be more expensive than previous years due to great US economy

  7. I just looked at Hotel Smeraldo's website and was seeing 153 euro/night for a small double room for a randomly selected 3-night stay in June 2019....

For August the same room went down to 106 euro/night.

That seems more like the spread I'd expect to see. But of course it all depends on supply and demand. If they already have limited availability on your dates, the rates could well be higher.

Are you looking at the hotels' own sites?

Exactly supply and demand. Just from my observation, it looks to me 2019 will be a busier year . We were booked on a cruise for June 2018 that we booked last July that we had to cancel, and rebooked for 2019 . The speed at which the cabins are being sold for same itinerary as 2018, is far greater with less options. for the 2019 . So that is bound to affect Rome Hotel prices.

I will look at hotel site. Do they allow you to book without a prepayment.

  8. The $220 to $300 rate you quoted sounds about right for June in Rome in a central location. The August rates might be a little lower just because most Europeans go to the seaside in August. However, the drop you found seems a bit extreme.

What hotels are you looking at?

    Hotel Smeraldo

    Hotel farnese as an example.

But good to know the $220 to $300 seems normal to you for mid June in Navonna or Pantheon area

  9. We need three nights next June 2019.

For hotels I like , preferably close to Piazza Navonna and Pantheon, I am seeing rates of approx $220 per night to $300 in US dollars

But then when I look at what those same hotels are charging for a room lets say in August of this year i see rates around $100.

So when you book in advance you get to pay double...or are these $100 rates at off times, or just last minute tourist rates. Is August cheaper than June ?

  10. looking for some recommendations for an Rome hotel pre cruise for June 2019..

First is it too early to book ?. I know you can book without paying a deposit so it seems like a no brainer but the prices seem a little high. When these hotel sites say there are only “ 2 rooms left” is that true or bogus?

Any hotels within close proximity to Piazza Navonna or Pantheon preferred. nice breakfast ,

  12. It's a common theme on the Cruise Air board to see people comment or complain about airfare being higher than cruise fare. We see it almost weekly. Because so many people seem to think there should be a correlation between them and that flight prices should never be higher than cruise prices, Globaliser is just trying to point out that the two have no economic ties to each other.

A lot of the reason airfare is higher now is demand. The global economy is, by and large, doing quite well, and thus demand for flights are high - both for business and leisure. Oil is going up, but that may or may not be a current issue depending on fuel hedging...different airlines will pay different amounts for fuel, and that may be higher or lower than the current market value.

Thank you. your second response is whats helpful, not the assumption that I have drawn a correlation between cruise fare and airfare just because I question a $980 roundtrip airfare in 2017 vs $2000 RT in 2018. Some people although obviously not you or Globalcruiser actually have to save and budget for a trip like this.

  13. :mad:To previous poster . Your advice below is not helpful and is most redicuclous as I am trying to understand the major increase over last year . Yes oil is higher , I’ll expect to more . Perhaps princess EZAir will be helpful

“Consistent advice here for fixing this problem: Buy a more expensive cruise.”

  14. I am shocked at next year 2019 summer Europe Airfares. I am doing sample fares , taking a cruise out of Rome and have to fly jax to Rome and come home Athens to Jax.

We were going to go last year but had to reschedule for this year. Last year we got round trip per person approx $980 per person which was great. Now I’m checking next May ( we are actually flying in mid June 2019) and RT fares today are at around 2800-3000 RT. How can there be such an increase. ????? Of course the $980 fare quoted us in 2017 for 2018 Cruise was throughprincess ez aire. But still. It looks like we are looking at. Tremendous airfare for summer 2019. More than the cruise fare.

  16. I always am amazed these days how many people think that this, that, and the other thing should be free. Somehow they fail to realize that nothing (consumer products-wize) is actually free. It has to be paid for by someone (or lots of someones).

I pay plenty for cruise plenty for Princess excursions drinks extras . Yes ar1950 I expect and want free internet in this day and age or at the very minimum at a small price not the outrageous prices of today. And if royal and celebrity have it, why not princess?
