    👋👋👋

Whew, spent the last three days catching up...nearly four months worth and 200+ pages! I read EVERY post, only skimming over the sports conversations.

First, condolences @Von & John@Greenpea2, and @princess76021. My sincerest sympathies for your losses. I believe there was a pet owner recently as well but I forgot to note who. I apologize if I am missing anyone else.

It was nice to see @deedle910 do a drive-by. I am sorry about your heartbreak and hope things are getting better for you.

@sid_9169 sorry about the snafu on your last cruise. Hopefully you are all healed from your surgery.

I spent this summer laying in the sun, reading my Kindle while healing my broken foot. It seems to be doing pretty well now. I turned 60 😬 in September and unfortunately was unable to reach my goal of doing a 5k before that milestone. Maybe by next year!

    Welcome back!

I booked the Radiance cruise last fall while I was on the Anthem of the Seas. Originally, I had been hoping to book an Icon crossing, but since that wasn’t an option I decided to do Alaska for the first time because I was peer pressured by the guy at the Next Cruise desk. I chose that particular sailing (September 22nd), because a couple of cruising friends who were with me on the Wonder were already booked on that sailing. Eventually, our two other friends from the Wonder cruise decided to join and now the whole gang’s going!

Because I have never been to Vancouver, I decided to extend my trip by arriving six days before the cruise to give me plenty of time to explore. I left Quebec City on September 16th on a direct flight (jackpot!) to Vancouver. The Radiance will leave on September 22nd on a round-trip cruise and will be stopping in Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan. At least, theoretically that’s what the Radiance will be doing.

The Radiance experienced some propulsion issues that resulted in the cancellation of two cruises (September 1st and 8th). Then, when she was finally fit to sail again on the 15th, she couldn’t because of bad weather and she had to stay docked in Seward for a few more days.

I wish I could tell you all about the excursions I plan to do, but those have not been confirmed by the Accessible Shore Excursions department yet, so it will be a surprise. For you and for me.

It’s the ship’s last cruise to Alaska of the season and originally I was supposed to stay onboard for a B2B to San Diego. However, I had to cancel the second leg when I realized I would need to buy a new computer as well as have my cat’s teeth cleaned under anaesthesia. It’s fine, that second cruise would have made packing quite complicated, anyway, because of the big weather difference.

My robot vacuum never needs to have its teeth cleaned. Just saying…

So exciting! I love your adventures!

    I’m back!!!!

Thanks to all of you who followed along on our Horizon adventure last month.  I hope everyone enjoys this Live review and trip report as well.

For those who did not see my Horizon review, it’s here:

Today is the day we packed up the car and started DRIVING to New Orleans.  No flights this trip!

We still didn’t get our replacement garment bag for the one American Airlines destroyed.  In fact, I don’t think they even shipped it yet.  Maybe it’ll come while we’re gone? Anyone have a magic 9 ball they can ask?  If it does manage to come while we’re away, at least we have the cat sitter to bring it in the house. The cat will be happy to have it.

Hopefully our suits and dresses don’t get wrinkled. I folded them up best I could.  I’ll let you know.

We got a late start today, as the kids had their last day of camp.  Well, most of us did.  My daughter left with my parents early this morning, and made it to Knoxville today.  My wife and I picked up her father before getting the kids at camp.  This worked out perfectly.  They got out of camp just in time for rush hour traffic. Just like I wanted!

One difference between camp and school that I noticed: on the last day of school, the kids come running out the moment the bell rings, as if the building was burning down.  On the last day of camp, the kids refuse to leave.  They hang around taking pictures of each other. Hugging.  Crying. I’m siting in the car in the car pool lane in the camp parking lot, watching our arrival time on the GPS getting later and later. It did amuse me, though, that the parking lot managed to show up as a RED traffic delay on the GPS. Impressive real time accuracy!

We planned on stopping for dinner at Edelweiss Restaurant in Stauntan, VA. We had been here once, all the way back in 2015. It was as good as we remembered.  I had the German Sampler so I could try a bit of everything.  Great meal to start off the trip!

Unfortunately, we had to wait a bit for a table, so we spent longer there than I would have liked.  I wish we had thought of calling ahead to see if they take reservations or call ahead seating.  Oh well.  Next time. Which will be in 2031, if we continue at the same frequency of visitations.

After dinner, we drove another hour to Troutville, to the Comfort Suites.  Which is where I am now, as I type this.  The hotel is very clean, and very comfortable. If you ever pass through here, I highly recommend this hotel, after dinner at Edelweiss.

It’s time for me to get some sleep.  We’re going to make it all the way to Hattiesburg tomorrow, so lots of driving. Breakfast will be in the hotel, lunch will be at Firehouse subs in Ooltewah, TN, and dinner will be in Laurel, MS at Pit Master BBQ (based on a recommendation from someone here on the Gulf Coast departure board.

See you tomorrow! Maybe I’ll post an update while my wife takes a shift driving. I’ll be sure to keep an updated count of the number of cars and trucks in the left lane driving 10 mph or more below the speed limit. I would have done that today, but I can’t count that high.

Yeah , you're back!! Have a safe trip.

On Celebrity last week room weren't ready until 1pm, but was encouraged to stop by the room to drop off stuff/put passports in the safe/etc. once I boarded at 11:30am.

RCL still has the rooms ready at 1:30pm usually, from my recent cruises on that line.

Exactly this, if the big Oasis class ships can be ready by 1:10, ao can NCL.

But even more important..,  I can't believe the number of people chiming that it is not that  big of a deal to not have a.clean room??? Seriously,  if someone else's toenails and body hairs and what other filth left in the bathroom , that is cause to immediately bring those issues to the head of housekeeping.  You aren't camping,  you are traveling some luxurious accommodations

Major crisis averted! LM has a doll (which he named baby Sam) who he sleeps with every night. I casually remarked to DH that I hope LM doesn’t flip out when he finds out we decided not to take his stroller on this trip, and he suddenly looked at me with such horror in his eyes that I just gasped. He didn’t even have to say it—baby Sam was left at home. We decided it would be better to let the meltdown happen in the car rather than later on the ship. But we staved it off by telling him we’d stop at a store so he could pick a new friend to come on the cruise to sleep with. Luckily we were near Westbury (if you know the area, you know how many stores are there), so DH pulled into Walmart and LM and I ran in. He picked a stuffed Mickey Mouse and is very happy to take him on his adventures now. And thus we were pulled back from the brink of ruin 😅.

I love this story.  we had the same thing with Snoopy.  we finally  got a backup Snoopy and eventually we just called them his "Guys ".  always had tuck in older guy first, then the newer guy.  (one tag was more worn than the other).

Loving ❤️ the review.  have a safetrip!

No thanks. I’d be eating nothing for 72 hours even though my body could use that. 😁

Have you thought about telling her what you wished you would have done differently with your life and the way you feel it’s heading right now? Maybe she needs to hear this and not being told what you think she should do. Maybe she will be more likely to listen to that. Maybe or maybe not, but it’s worth a try. Glad you enjoyed your time with her. Since you only see her about once a year how about writing a letter to her with this info and she can think about it and where she’s heading. Just a thought.

    Beautifully said!

  7. 1.  I do expect.the room and bathroom to be cleaned AFTER the previous guest leaves.

    2. So rooms are not ready on embarkation until after 3pm and as late as5 pm or after? Isn't the average available time on other cruise lines around 1 - 2 pm?

3pm -5pm seems kinda of late to be able access the room I paid for, some rooms are quite a bit money.

    3. I don't expect 2 services a day, BUT, I do expect once a day, just a quick sweep thru./ wipe down.  Pick up dirty towels  empty trash, straighten the bed.

    4.  I do expect clean towels EVERY day.  I'm ok if the attendant leaves extra clean towels for me.

    5.  I pick up after myself, a room attendant does not have to put my personal stuff away.

I don't think the list above is not ⁶asking too much from a steward.

My day was made today when Joe came home from the shooting range and came in holding a vase of flowers, saying "These must be from your secret boyfriend". I had no clue who would send me flowers or why. It was from my 3 stepsons for Mother's Day. The card read "You are such an amazing human and we are so lucky to have you. Thank you for always being a grounding force and holding us together. Your patience, persistence, and the peace you bring balances us all out. We love you!" signed, "The Rymer kids (now adults, Lol!)"

Joe said, "They didn't write that." I said, "no, probably not. But they chose it!"

These kids were a hell trip for me for 6 entire years. Every day was an ugly struggle. They wanted to live with their mother, but she was/is an alcoholic drug abuser and after giving her an entire year of-every-month-and-a-half court dates (during which time she never once did anything the court required of her), the judge finally gave up and "gave" them to us to finish raising. The twins were about 11 and their older brother was 13 when they came to live with us. It was all my fault according to them. It was a battlefield each and every day, especially with one of the twins. They would not do chores, get up on time (they were late for school so many times they would get detention, and then half the time not even go) homework, anything, without a big and constant struggle, much of which fell on me because DH worked crazy hours. My friends kept telling me "Some day they will appreciate what you did (or tried to do) for them." My reply would be,:"At this point, who cares. I don't. They are awful and make my life hell, I can't imagine ever feeling it was worth this much hell."

Well I do. They are all gainfully employed and doing well, two are in long-term relationships. They are now 28 and 30. And they appreciate what I tried to give them. I never thought I'd be able to say that.

Mothers come in all shapes, sizes, and types.

    What a beautiful story!
