  1. From the London/UK Daily Mail this morning, they had this headline: “The best cities in the world for culture in 2023 named” with these background highlights: “Time Out's ranking was drawn up via a survey of 21,000 city-dwellers across the globe who were asked about the 'quality' and 'affordability' of their city's cultural scene.” In Australia, here are their reporting highlight for their world rankings: "In 10th spot is Melbourne, with Time Out describing it as a 'pretty fun place to be'. 'From graffiti-covered laneways to the artistic hub of Fed Square, culture is alive and well in Melbourne,' says Time Out. Its 'thriving community of creatives and artists' makes the city 'a pretty fun place to be', the publication notes. It continues: 'Take it from the locals: Melburnians praised their city for its vibrancy, variety and sense of community, shouting out annual events like Moomba as well as cultural institutions like the NGV, Australia’s most-visited and longest-running art museum.' " Does Sydney feel over-looked? Or, is Melbourne better for culture versus Sydney? Here are their reporting highlight: "Buenos Aires is a 'hub for every branch of the arts'. From libraries to late-night tango, there's something for everyone. 'Culture pulses through Buenos Aires' Veins,' says Time Out, which it calls 'the bookstore capital of the world, the birthplace of tango, and a hub for every branch of the arts'. The city's main opera house, Teatro Colon, topped 'the list of locals' favourite venues', Time Out says, adding that 'late-night tango, libraries and the street art-plastered neighbourhood of San Telmo each received several mentions too'. The guide adds: 'Taking in all that culture won't cost you much, either, as Buenos Aires boasts the second-most-affordable culture scene of all the cities surveyed.' 4. From the London/UK Daily Mail this morning, they had this headline: “The best cities in the world for culture in 2023 named” by Jessica Hamilton with these background highlights: “Time Out's ranking was drawn up via a survey of 21,000 city-dwellers across the globe who were asked about the 'quality' and 'affordability' of their city's cultural scene.” In Greece, Athens was ranked fifth in the world. Here are their reporting highlight: "Locals named the Acropolis as their favourite cultural venue in Athens. 'Athens has been a global centre for the arts since... well, forever,' says Time Out. But these days, the Greek capital 'is known as much for its anarchic underground culture as it is for ancient ruins', says the guide. It notes that nonetheless, it was the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum that locals named their favourite cultural venue, 'proving just how much the city remains gripped by its own history'." Cape Town's multiculturalism has 'lent the city an enviable offering when it comes to art and culture', Time Out says. It adds: 'From the lively annual Kaapse Klopse street parade, to cabaret and comedy at mega-institutions Baxter Theatre and Artscape, every corner of South Africa's sprawling seaside has something to offer culture-seekers.' Time Out notes that in the survey 'the city ranked highest overall for the quality of its cultural offerings', and locals praised its 'diverse' atmosphere." 6. Congratulations Sydney!! From Condé Nast Traveler magazine two days ago, they had this headline: “10 Friendliest Cities in the World" with this sub-headline: "The bustling metropolises you loved most this year, from Oceania to Mexico.” They asked questions about: Did an outgoing local go out of their way to give you directions? Easy to navigate? Get good vibes from the people around you? They picked the ten best cities in the world for this important category in their Reader's Choice Awards survey. Here are their reporting highlights for this Australia superstar: “Let’s face it: You can’t beat Sydney. The beautiful seaside city has always been beloved by our readers, and now it’s even earning high marks for its friendliness factor. This should come as no surprise (Aussies are famously chummy), but the next-level lifestyle of Sydneysiders really must be experienced in person. And if you need another reason to visit, consider that Sydney has some of the best beaches and coffee shops in the entire country.” Full story at: https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/2015-08-14the-2015-friendliest-and-unfriendliest-cities-in-the-world?utm_source=nl&utm_brand=cnt&utm_mailing=CNT_Daily_PM_112223&utm_campaign=aud-dev&utm_medium=email&bxid=5db3f99524c17c23c34ecf3e&cndid=6657468&hasha=e1ca3019f9f535a4b98389997c63b892&hashb=7daf2541a0de702392cfe60ed513a5c2d1d23598&hashc=f541a9e649534cc2931bd57d58d8c2cac2bb8c5d298f722bad5b05cc8ad5ece2&esrc=IDCONDENAST_REGGATE&utm_term=CNT_Daily THANKS! 11. How do Porto and Lisbon compare for being friendly cities? Both are "WINNERS" per this travel magazine's international Reader Choice Awards survey. They picked ten cities in the world with two of them being from Portugal. Here are their reporting highlights: “Lisbon is the perfect jumping off point for first-time visitors to Portugal, with enough coastal views, historic architecture, and pastéis de nata to fill an entire vacation. Its growing popularity means you’ll mingle with like-minded folks in one of Lisbon’s fado restaurants or coffee shops.” For Porto, here is their summary: "Porto may be known for its wine and port, but oenophiles aren’t the only ones who have fallen in love with this cozy northern city. Aside from booze, Portugal’s second city has some of the best scenery in the country—and some of the happiest locals, too. After maxing out your credit card at the city’s coolest galleries and chocolate shops, plop yourself down at a sidewalk cafe and smile at everyone who walks past (we guarantee they’ll all smile back)." 13. From Condé Nast Traveler magazine five days ago, they had this headline: “Best Places to Go in Asia in 2024" with this sub-headline: "From Sri Lanka's shores to Uzbekistan's Silk Road, Asia offers reasons galore to pack your bags and head east.” Here are some of their opening summary: “It’s official, Asia is back—brighter, bolder, and more ambitious than ever. The region took longer than others to shake off pandemic-related travel restrictions and border closures, but has returned in full force, eager to remind international travelers what they’ve been missing.” They give a major focus for Sri Lanka with an opening summary of "Go for: wellness retreats, a new food festival, and a nearly 200-mile nature trail". Here are more specifics cited: "Rising from economic uncertainty, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is in the midst of a luxury and wellness boom—from its tea-filled highlands to its palm-fringed shores. In the south of the country, new luxury resorts continue to entice. Among them, Kayaam House and Ahu Bay by homegrown luxury travel specialist Resplendent Ceylon; a Hilton resort next to the Indian Ocean-bordering Yala National Park, one of the best places to spot Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards; and the art deco-inspired The Charleston, which opens in December in the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort." Need added, future options??: "In January, the Galle Literary Festival will return after a five-year hiatus, with appearances by literary figures such as Shehan Karunatilaka and Alexander McCall Smith, while Gourmet Galle, the country’s new food festival, will spotlight 12 chefs in 12 venues, ranging from beaches to paddy fields, over a 12-week period from January to March." 17. Look forward during this coming week to learning more as to what Silversea is doing (or NOT doing) with the Silver Moon in late December and January. Yes, this is a serious challenge. Why are we interested? We are on the Silver Moon, Mumbai to Singapore sailing, Feb. 11-29, 2024. How does the Silver Moon get from the Med to the Red Sea? My pure guess/speculation is that Silversea adjusts that pre-New Years Day cruise to end in the Med and then sails down the Suez Canal without passengers. Crew only to do that part of the sailing?? Then re-load with passengers in Oman and continue with those various Middle East stops before going on to India and the various Asian ports in the Spring. Hopefully as today's headlines hint and indicate, maybe the war dangers will become less deadly and be calmer for Israel and Gaza. This is certainly a challenging and difficult time. We can all wish for the best. For those scheduled for the Silver Moon in later December and January, keep us posted as to what Silversea says and shares. THANKS! Enjoy! 18. Excellent background for those various speakers and that they also had these presentation being available for later viewing on the cabin TV's. For us, if and when we would do a trans-Atlantic sailing, knowing that Silversea did well with the various speakers (and entertainment in general) would be very important to us as more itinerary-focused travelers. Nice from this T-A to have such a depth of background information and super sharing!! THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

  20. Appreciate your above comment and follow-up. From the London/UK Sunday Times this weekend, they have this headline: “Why I swapped the Greek islands for Abu Dhabi after having a baby" with this sub-headline: "For the hot weather, ease and pure indulgence, a family break to a luxury Middle Eastern hotel is well worth the long flight – even with a toddler.” Here are some of their story highlights: “The temptation of sunshine grew too much and we were persuaded by a five-star hotel in Abu Dhabi. This stay looked straightforward, stress-free and with guaranteed winter sun. As the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, is a surprisingly quiet city. Yes, everywhere things are being built: apartment blocks, beachside homes — most of them super-luxurious, this is part of the world built on oil and opulence after all. But Abu Dhabi is calmer than glitzy Dubai and is arguably more appealing to families.” Full story at: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/why-i-traded-the-greek-islands-for-abu-dhabi-after-having-a-baby-tm6zmpmdz THANKS! 21. Here is another sign of recovery for the cruise lines as to being back to "normal". From the Miami Herald in the heart of the cruise company headquarters in late October, they had this headline: “With pandemic at their backs, cruise lines make a splash with world cruises” with these highlights: “The coronavirus pandemic completely shut down the global cruise sector for over a year. That hit South Florida’s economy particularly hard since PortMiami and Port Everglades are the two largest cruise ports in the United States. The cruise industry has staged a strong comeback with world cruises representing the final piece of the cruising resurgence. People are paying $25,000 to over $100,000 to sail around the world. The long around-the-globe trips have gained renewed popularity.” Here is more: "When cruising initially restarted in 2022, some ports weren’t ready, limiting itineraries. Now, operating world trips shows that, 'cruising is back,' said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America. Company research on people sailing since the pandemic ended last year showed many avid cruisers want to 'make up for lost time'. A leader of Regent Seven Seas agreed: 'You are seeing trends in the luxury space where people want to travel for longer, they want to go to more exotic destinations, and they want to do it in more of an all-inclusive experience.' " From this report, one doing a long cruise noted: "The idea that they clean my room twice a day, they shop for and cook my food, and they serve it to me is a huge appeal. You’ve got fresh towels and fresh linens. It’s wonderful.” Right? Full story at: https://www.miamiherald.com/article280138484.html THANKS! Enjoy! 22. WOW!! What an amazing week for the three cruise line stocks!! I cannot remember any week that has moved up, UP, UP so dramatically. Reactions and predictions for next week and during December? From the Wall Street Journal late Friday afternoon, below are their charts to details how things keep move upward in such a consistent positive manner. At the start of trading on Monday morning, Royal Caribbean was trading at $94.18. They finished the week at $105.84. That's an increase of $11.66 per share. Or, working out to a 12.4% upswing for just these five days. Pretty good? Why? Part of it is the overall market trend driven by a seemingly slowing rate of inflation. Other insights, speculation, guesses, etc.? Don't be shy!! What do you see in the future for these cruise stocks? THANKS! Enjoy! 23. Maybe the below story helps explain part of today's big jump UP, UP in value of the cruise ship stocks. Reactions and insights? From CNBC Cable financial news this afternoon, they had this headline: “Dow rallies more than 500 points on tame inflation report, builds on strong November gains” with these highlights: “Stocks rallied Tuesday, building on their strong November gains, as Wall Street cheered new U.S. inflation data that raised hope of the Federal Reserve wrapping up its rate-hiking campaign. Tuesday’s gains added to an already stellar performance this month for stocks. The S&P 500 and Dow are up 7.3% and 5.5%, respectively, in November.” Do investors view that lower inflation and a booming stock market will boost "consumer confidence to spur continued cruise bookings? Is this the correct analysis for today's market response? Full story at: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/13/stock-market-today-live-updates.html THANKS! Enjoy! 24. Super appreciate this wonderful panoramic view for this portion of the dynamic Singapore skyline, other landmarks, etc. Am I understanding correctly that on the left is the tall, circular Swissotel The Stamford and near it being St. Andrew's Anglican Church? At the right, is that round roof being the Supreme Court structure? And, of course, in the more distant middle are the three towers of Sands Marina Bay. I can also see on the left the unique roofs of Esplanade/Theatres on the Bay, Right? As I orient myself to Singapore, to the left of the The Stamford would that be the famed Raffles Hotel and the JW Marriott where we will be staying? Am I starting get the "hang" of it for some of the key locations in and around Singapore? THANKS! Enjoy! 25. Here might be some "good news" for the cruise lines and sailing passengers. After all, you cannot do a cruise without first getting there and having a return air flight at a reason price. From the New York Times this morning, they had this headline: “Sharp Drop in Airfares Cheers Inflation-Weary Travelers" with this sub-headline: "Airlines are starting to offer bargain prices, including to popular overseas destinations like Paris, a sign that they are fighting to fill planes.” Here are some of their reporting highlights: “Airfares to many popular destinations have recently fallen to their lowest levels in months, and even holiday travel is far cheaper than it was last year, providing some welcome relief to consumers who have been frustrated for months by high prices for all manner of goods and services. The glut of deals suggests that the airline industry’s supercharged pandemic recovery may finally be slowing as the supply of tickets catches up and, on some routes, overtakes demand, which appears relatively robust.” Full story at: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/14/business/air-fares-falling-deals.html THANKS!
