  1. This was from a disgruntled passenger who did not seem to understand the difference between the medallion and the app. He provides no details on the alleged refusal. They were giving them out at the PSD a couple of months ago. Has anyone else been refused a card?
  2. The approvals are done under FCC part 15. One part of the testing is for the unintentional radiation. From something as low powered as the medallion, there is very little clock emissions. I just put one on the spectrum analyzer and could not see anything above the noise floor. The bluetooth circuitry is an intentional radiator and the testing is much more complicated but it is BLE and done on a low duty cycle so not much power is emitted there.
  3. Since they check all the information at check in, it should not be an issue. However, once it is input into the computer, Princess has it stored on their servers. Your on board charges go directly to the credit card company. The passport info is needed for immigration.
  4. We get there around 1pm. Please push everyone in tight so there is room.
  5. If you want a cruise card, just ask and they will give you one. The statement is available at all times while on the ship in the app. No internet needed, just connect to the wifi. Works even if you have a cruise card as it is through the app, not the medallion.
  6. My parade too since I get on the ship on friday.
  7. Various posters have listed the internet speeds in their "live from" reports. Some good, some awful, some no internet. We were without internet for several days on a cruise this summer. It never was up to your speeds.
  8. In the days of the R class Royal, Ocean and Pacific Princess we spent a lot of time in that library. It was a quiet haven. Oceania has one of these previous R class ships from Princess and a couple they had before and Azamara also has one. Removing that library would massively change the cruising experience.
  9. The toilets flush with a vacuum, not fluid. The fluid is to have some afterwards. If the toilet does not flush, do not keep pushing the button. Wait for it to be fixed. Continuing to push the button will make it overflow.
  10. That storm is supposed to follow you. Maybe rain on friday in San Pedro.
  11. From the menus posted, for $12 you get generic Pinot Grigio etc. But with the high priced packages you get wine from actual wineries.
  12. The Medallions do run in listener mode but that still uses power even with BLE. A hotel chain had an issue with the lock bluetooth batteries running down near the elevator as they got pinged by everyone that went down the hall. If I am board on a sea day, maybe I will walk up and down the corridor to see if I can run down the battery in my medallion. It would still work for the door (up close) and the bars but tracking would no longer work. That way, except for my breath, my wife will not know that I am not in the gym.
  13. This would be an interesting experiment. By covering most of the medallion, you may be able to make the bluetooth less effective. I seem to remember that the wall kiosks also have an RFID reader. If that is the case, just presenting the card (or medallion with a dead battery) would give the same result as the medallion. In this case, the cruise card is just as useful for locating the room as the medallion. I will take an old medallion on the next cruise and see if it at least acknowledges the RFID part.
  14. The only facial recognition we have seen lately has been the US immigration. Never did show a passport.
  15. This has nothing to do with the app on your phone. All the data is kept on the Princess web server. If there are no reservations available, I get a message saying "We could not find any reservations at this time. Please check back later." On our cruise next week, there seem to be no specialty restaurant reservations available.
  16. I think it rates above the scheduled breakfast Christmas breakfast PJ party on our next cruise. They would not like my PJs christmas or no.
  17. One of the issues with the shower and the lack of either hot or cold water is the mixing valve may have gotten stuck while the ship was sitting idle. We had that in January. Setting it for full flow and moving the temperature dial back and forth gradually loosened it. While it was being sticky there were times with a sudden temperature change. All fine by the end of the voyage for the next passenger.
  18. Certainly second the small group choice. A few years back we spent two weeks in Israel with a private guide and it was stunning. Going to some small arab places for meals, camel riding in the Negev desert, meeting with locals at each stop and timing to avoid the crowds. Also going to Petra (in Jordan but with a local guide there). In the Negev we got to the site before the bus crowds hit and had the camel place to ourselves. Afterwards we went to the nearby Nabatian city of Manshit (this was on the trade route that also went through Petra) and we were the only tourists in the entire excavations. The cruise ship tours were very good but you had a crowd. At Gethsemane we waited outside for an hour for our bus to get back through traffic. At the dead sea, one passenger got lost while shopping and was well over an hour late. The guide told us to just hold it in and wait for the ship as we were not stopping on the way back to Haifa. I would go back happily either way. It is an amazing place.

  20. As I posted before, they cannot just ship the Medallions to places where they do not have government approval for the bluetooth interface. That can be a real nuisance since the harmonics fall into some sensitive frequency bands. Mailing them to only US addresses is simpler. If you are having trouble sleeping you might read patent number US10,304,271 which describes in detail the Medallion contents and functions. Particularly look at figure 6 which is a block diagram of the functions in the Medallion. Notice also that John Padgett is listed as the inventor.
  21. I do remember that on the last trip even with the Ice Captain, our limits and path were set by the insurance company. There are lots of passengers but those ships are expensive.
  22. On a recent cruise, my profile picture would show and it would list my name but it would not unlock the door. So everytime I left the room I would have to go sit in a bar and wait for my wife to come look for me. That worked pretty well but she got quicker at finding me as the cruise went on.
  23. The Sapphire is going to do a cruise around in Antarctica next. When we did this on the Star years ago, they had a second captain on board (referred to an an Ice Captain who had been a captain on an icebreaker). The Drake passage crossing was interesting as there were hurricane force winds and huge swells. These came from the side as the flow is around Antarctica. You had to hold onto the bed to not fall off. The shelves were emptied in our room and places like the gift shops. The kitchens were apparently a huge mess. Lots of chair cushions missing and the glass doors that open for the pools were damaged. The Captain came on in the morning and said something like "we had an interesting night but we are out of the worst of it". The weather after that was perfect and it was an enjoyable cruise. Looking forward to leaving on the Sapphire next week.
  24. I had this problem with payment authorization for my wife. There was (at least at the time) no way to add a person to an existing payment. On the first cruise I went to the PSD and had them do it (after being told I could not look at my wife's account since it was on a different credit card). Then I noticed that if I deleted my credit card and then there is an option to add someone as you are first puting in the credit card. That worked fine.
  25. If you put your phone on settings and look for bluetooth devices, you will see SEOS. That is why there is a battery inside and why they do not send the medallions out too far in advance. I had one go dead on a cruise. The only way to get the range is with bluetooth. This is where the tracking is done for locating ship mates. An interesting thing to is to look at you in the locate function and you can see which way the medallion is pointed. As you rotate it, the symbol will also rotate. Also being bluetooth the signal can get shielded fairly easily. If you put it on a lanyard and have it next to your chest, it may not work for location. That may be why we had poor luck in getting anything delivered. The people who reported that drinks were delivered to their rooms when they were not there was probably because it used the last reported location for the delivery. If you download NFCtools you can read the medallion. It shows up as a Mifare Plus with a 7 byte CSN.
