  1. Maybe 1/4 of those 18% would not sail, about 4 1/2% that will be more than made up for by new non smokers who will now be willing to sail. No smoking will be a positive for the cruise lines. In 5-10 years I can see 100% non smoking on cruises. Remember when they stoped smoking on air liners. The smokers all called it the end of air travel. Really.........

There aren't a whole lot of other options to air travel. There are a whole lot of other options for vacationing so honestly its a huge difference. A lot of smokers are looking into AIs now because they allow smoking outdoors everywhere

  2. As long as it is a designated area per the signage

I for one applause Ncl and fully expect them to police this policy. So if you are not sitting and actively sting in the casino do not smoke

I would expect that means the seated player is the only one allowed to smoke not the spouse standing next to them at the slot machine

As I am sailing the ba I will especially expect this to be enforced. NCL I hope you are hearing this!!!!

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Well if they enforce it...Smokers will sit at the penny machines playing 9 cents a spin while smoking. It pretty much guarantees any machines in the smoking section will be occupied.

  3. One less reason to cruise NCL. Mediocre at best. Was going to switch from Carnival to NCL before this decision. But with both of these line's decisions, compared to the more polished lines; Celebrity/Royal, the price better continue to be low. Not an advantage to travel Carnival anymore or attempt another trip on NCL. Epic was NOT epic and NCL Star was worse. As many other folks, we got locked out of our cabins twice on Star, and that was on a 2 day cruise. Way to go NCL, consistent.

Princess at least allows e-cigs everywhere except MDR and show lounge. Think I will look into cruising with them next.

  4. No more girl talk sitting in the GV smoking :( and having a fun time

So have it in the casino, or the cigar bar if you are lucky enough to have one. I will figure it out. I would figure it out on Carnival as well. They just won't get my money for a balcony as I wouldn't use it often enough to justify the expense

  5. I'm with you. If someone is sitting down playing one cent a spin and the machines are full, I guess I can spend my gambling money in Las Vegas.

Actually I think it would be 9 cents a spin...Funnily enough I do that when I want to gamble as I hate slot machines and don't wanna spin the big bucks LOL

  6. No one knows either way. Many do contain nicotine and a lot in a very hazardous form, that is an undeniable fact.

Actually yes they do. Even in the current we wanna find fault in them FDA studies they have shown that e-cigs are much less harmful to both vaper and bystanders then smoking a real cigarette

  7. So if the real driving force behind the ban is regulation and the cost of retrofitting, does that hold out hope that new builds may have the sort of equipment that will make it safer for a portion of some ships to permit balcony smoking?

I doubt it as what they would have to do is very expensive whether retro-fitting or new build

  8. All the nastiness aside, one of my guilty pleasures during a cruise is to wake up early grab a cup of coffee and have a smoke on the balcony watching the sun rise.

Balconies are now not worth the money.

Just spring for an interior as you will now hardly ever be in your room

  9. No, no - not CSI LOL Just in general. If you walk into a smoker's home - one where they actually smoke inside, other than the smell, you can actually see the residue sometimes. That's what I meant. My brother was looking into an e-cig to help him quit smoking. I just thought they were water ... and used more for the feel of having a cigarette in your hand w/out actually smoking. I didn't know they contained nicotine until a few days ago.

That residue is not from nicotine it is from the smoke...You have the same type of residue if you have a fireplace or wood burning stove in your home

  10. No, just responding to the comment that it was not detectable. Most likely they would not, but if an issue did arise they could. Not much of an expense either.

A friend of mine manages a large hotel. When it comes down to a debate about a violation of their smoking policy that is exactly what they do. Nicotine will get deposited on the surfaces. Vertical or horizontal. Hard to leave your nicotine patch on the mirror on the wall. Biggest issue with using e-cigs inside a cabin is physical transfer of nicotine, since it is absorbed via skin contact.

I don't have an issue with e-cigs used outside, but inside there are issues with Nicotine and nm sized particles, even in well ventilated space. Does not take many to get the nm particle level into the unhealthy level.

e-cigs are substantially better than regular cigarettes, but still impact those around the user inside.

Yep...Too bad nicotine is no more harmful then caffeine. Also I fill my tank daily...I could spill liquid nicotine on said hard surfaces and guess what...that isn't against the rules. And no its not hard to leave a nicotine patch on the wall they are adhesive you know ROFL :)

  11. Just curious, how would the steward know? I have a friend who uses one in her tiny mini cooper & I never smell anything when we ride together. Please understand, I'm not challenging you, I am truly curios.

    Thanks

The one on my carnival cruise never had a clue so I am guessing the steward on an NCL ship also wouldn't have a clue

  12. I'm not sure that's how it's gonna pan out that only active players can smoke. I gamble every day the casino is open so that would not effect me. But what would effect me is if they make most of it non smoking. If the machines I like are in a smoking section and I can get to play it I'm good to go. What I'm worried about is there will be someone sitting at a machine and playing a penny at a time just to smoke and really have no interest in playing.

Probably...But not likely. Most smokers I know like to gamble.

  13. Yep, they do. Nicotine liquid is poisonous, and there are reports of kids drinking it by accident and getting very sick. There is also nicotine present in the vapor. The e-sigs are still a safer alternative to cigarettes because it doesn't have hundreds of carcinogens that come from burning tobacco.

So, probably not safe, but safter

You do realize that nicotine is no more dangerous then caffiene right? Oh wait maybe you don't

  14. LOL 'vape'. You do realize that the ecigs that use liquid nicotine in any manner what so ever are extremely hazardous to the smoker and those nearby right? In most cigarette manufacturing plants (including the one who packages their cigs in a red and white box and had a cowboy in their ads at one point), workers are required to wear full hazmat suits at all times when dealing with liquid nicotine.

No they aren't...As a matter of fact current studies contracted by the FDA are finding very little hazards to those nearby and minimal hazards to the vaper. And e-cig users are not smokers as their is no smoke involved whatsoever

  15. I put that question to Him yesterday.. Why the big 180 ?

Oh well .. If they make the change so be it , but it would have made a lot

more sense to put a 6 month window on it . That way most currently booked Pax would not be affected...

c'est la vie , Christmas in Portugal it is .. ;) ( the last place in the world that really knows how to do Christmas )

OOOOO Kind of off topic but I have heard Christmas in Portugal is phenomenal so do enjoy!!

  16. and the Stewards will certainly know if someone was foolish enough to try to sneak this in their cabin.

Nope...Stewards would have no clue unless they saw you using it while standing in your cabin. There is no smoke smell from PVs at all. For many flavors there is no smell period. I have vaped on airplanes next to the cabin attendant and blew the vape in my shirt and she had no clue I was even doing it.

  17. This is the most level headed and rational post I've seen on this subject since last week. If indeed many smokers are ruled by their cigarettes, I feel sorry for them. It's a shame that their lives are controlled by something as harmful as a smoking addiction. However, I think most of the people claiming they will now vacation on land are blowing smoke, pun intended. :) There's a big difference between a land vacation and a cruise and I would think that most of the people frequent this board because they love cruising. I wouldn't think it would be so easy to give up something you love....that is unless they love cigarettes more.

Nobody that smokes loves cigarettes...(well some may but most do not). We have an addiction to nicotine. For some of us we have tried nicotine replacement therapy and drugs to no avail. I finally quit smoking when I started vaping. So yes I can see folks who can't smoke for 7 days giving up cruising.

  18. BINGO!

Maybe now the 'non-smokers are out to get us' nonsense will cease?

Perhaps if the cruise lines just told folks when they changed policy that the reason why is due to cost containment measures due to new regulations/insurance the "non-smokers are out to get us" nonsense wouldn't have started in the first place.

  19. The food may be a bit better on HAL (Although lately everything downhill on those ships, i.e. early Port departure, bad entertainment, much less staff, etc. ). :(It is definitely not a 'lively ship' at all.... HAL is not what it's 'cracked up to be' and quite costly.

I'll stick w/ NCL, Princess or RCi ~ Happier people, whether they smoke or not....

    Safe sails.:)

HAL is apparently going to ban as well

  20. Does anyone know where smoking is allowed on deck? Is it the entire starboard side of the ship ?

Depends on the ship and apparently Carnival is looking into expanding designated deck smoking areas. On the liberty it was the starboard side of Deck 10 and it was always crowded and only had one very overflowing ashtray
