  1. We've sailed the Sun for the last two years and had great cruises. Yes she is smaller, which is what I like also 2001 including crew. She is starting to show some wear but the crew does a great job on her upkeep and you will always see them painting and polishing.

Both cruises we stayed in a forward penthouse and loved our cabin, plenty of space on the balcony. I do understand the bathrooms in the regular rooms are small.

Unfortunately food is subjective and since I'm not a picky eater I can find something I like where ever we go. Hubby is all about meat and he never had an issue either. Service can be slow in the main dining room at times so if you are planning on going to the show after leave yourself enough time.

Entertainment wise its fine, we didn't do many shows the 2nd trip since we had seen them the year prior. Also we aren't into musicals so only caught the comedians and they were good.

Probaly my only complaint was the buffet it was to small and the set up is bad. I recommend using the outside area, same selections and less crowded.

If you like a small ship you will like the Sun, we sure did. Hope this helped

    Enjoy your cruise

  2. And please allow me to confirm that...I was the poster who reported that on my 12/1 Gem cruise the voucher did not permit use in Moderno. It named La Cucina and Orchid Garden as the permissible substitutes for Le Bistro.

Our Feb cruise did not have Moderno listed either, we asked and they said yes it was an acceptable substitution.

It could be a decision made ship to ship. I will try again next month on the Breakaway and see what happens

  3. I agree with 1st part. Yes, flying places is a hassle. But I'd rather see more islands. Or be able to hop in a pool as soon as I walk on a ship.

I am from NYC myself. I took a cruise in December from FLL. Commute sucked, plane was late, with expected sweaty fat guy sitting next to me. But as soon as I got on a ship, I could put on flip flops, shorts, and enjoy myself outside.

    .

I totally agree, and usually pack flip flops in my carry one but DH and DS begged and won on this one. I will never know I don't like it unless I try, so they are getting two on me mega ship and sailing out of NY in the winter.

  4. Has anyone used the Concierge as a platinum member for dinner reservations etc. We have always sailed suites and our 2015 Breakaway cruise will be our first non-suite cruise so was just wondering about the concierge interaction with Platinum guests

  5. Great review thanks so much this is just what I was looking for. Was really nervous about sailing a big ship but my DS and DH really wanted to try so we are booked Feb 1st 2015 for the 12 day. Your review has me looking forward to it now.

Thanks for clearing up about pre-booking dining. We are the same as you and prefer to eat later so for 3 of us think I will wait until we board

  6. We've cruised the Sun twice with our son, he was 11 and 12. Depending on when you sail as to whether there will be a lot of other kids onboard. We sailed in Feb both times and there were only a handful of kids his age.

With that being said it is a great ship but doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the mega ships, no rock climbing wall, water slides etc. For my son it didn't matter he had a great time, heck who wouldn't he wasn't in school.

We love the Sun, older ship but great crew and easy to navigate

  7.

I could not stand Blue Lagoon on the Dawn. It was loud and was a teen hangout at all hours. Understand they need a place to go but It was not very pleasant if you were not one of them. At least on my cruise.

That's funny didn't care for BL on the Dawn either, enjoyed it on the Pearl though

  8. We just returned from our 3rd trip to Barbados and our 3rd time sailing with Calabaza. I cannot say enough good things about Gina and her crew.

Swimming with the turtles, snorkeling over the shipwrecks, lunch, drinks, sun and fun what more could you ask for!

I would highly recommend Calabaza to anyone without hesitation!

  9. Just back from St Lucia and I organized a CC group of 21 for the Jealousie Beach Break with Spencer and we had a great day!

As promised Spencer and his staff were waiting outside the tourism building for us with a sign. We were a bit delayed but it was out fault as we were waiting for two people that never showed up.

Spencer himself escorted us across to the dock where we boarded two boats to head to the beach. We needed to take two since his new one is still not licensed as the person who does the license has been away for 2 weeks.

We had a great ride out to the Pitons and really enjoyed our time on the beach. There was some rain on the ride out and alittle bit more when we arrived but it cleared out nicely and we had a great day on the beach. Since we were the first to arrive there were plenty of beach chairs and Spencer provided us with rum punch, beer, water and sodas. Lunch was very good with Chicken and salads.

I did not snorkel but a few in our group did and said it was wonderful, like snorkeling in a fish bowl. One of Spencers guides even helped one of our members who uses a walker in and out of the water so he could snorkel and was feeding the fish for everyone to see.

Spencer spent the entire day with us and was a real treat to talk to. He really loves his island.

Our guided tour along the coast was just as much fun as my son asked Spencer to drive fast so he did, just for a few mins to make him laugh, actually he made us all laugh.

We arrived back at the pier by 3:30 and still had time to do some shopping.

Everyone in the group enjoyed the day and I would definitely book with Spencer again

  10. We sailed the Sun last year so much so we will be back on her in 15 days and cant wait.

Like others have stated if you are looking for a ship with all the bells and whistles then the Sun is not it. She is on the smaller side just but extremely well kept and the Crew is wonderful.

My son is older so he doesn't use the kids crew anymore and usually spends his day either at the pool or basketball court.

  11. Betty we did the boat tour last year and was excellent. Spencer will take you and look after you all the time and give you a comfortable journey.

We are doing this tour with Spencer on Feb 9th. He has been so prompt to respond and very easy to deal with so your feedback just ensures that I made the right choice

  12. We've had quite a few great customer service stories with NCL I would say one on every cruise so I will just pick one

We did the 4 day on the Sky and after a full day in port I decided I wanted Italian for dinner so we went to La Cucuina. My son decided to have one of those nights and wasn't going to eat. When our waiter came to take our order I told him he decided he wasn't eating but if he could bring me a plate I knew when the pizza came he would want some.
About 10 mins later he came back with a pizza with pepperoni in the shape of a smiley face for him, needless to say he did eat that night.

    Pat

Did Sarper say how long he was going to be onboard?

  14. Just got off the Sun Sunday 2-17 when we left

Captain Ronnie Borg (Met the ship 2-15 in St Maarten)

    Hotel Director Steven Jacobsen

    F&B Kevin Bland

    Concierge Omar O'Besso

    Head Chef Orwill Saldannha

    Cruise Director Richard Matic

Steven will be leaving 3-10 for vacation, he did not say who his replacement would be. Kevin Bland is on his first tour with NCL, he just spent 3 months on the Spirit.

Loved Richard as the cruise director.

We were in cabin 9002 foward suite and our Butler was Teresa Perez "Mama T", room steward was Jongle Yanong

  15. I was originally going to book the owners suite but I'm sailing in Feb out of NY and I felt it wasn't worth the extra money for haven access when most of my cruise days the weather will be cold to utilizie the haven outdoor space. I already had suite perks in the penthouse suite so I felt it wasn't worth the extra money. Unless I get offered a cheap upgrade price I'm happy with my aft penthouse :p

If the weather is cold they will close the retractable roof, that is when you want access to the haven outdoor space...can still use the pool and hot tub without freezing

  16. We have been very lucky and had a few opportunities to dine with the officers on our sailing. We met one of the AHD's on our first cruise and again on our second and third, he has gone out of his way to include us in dinner with him. On our last Pearl cruise we had dinner with the Captain in LeBistro then 2 nights later was invited to dinner with the AHD in LaCucina. I was alittle embarrased when the Captain showed up to dine with us in LaCucina and said wow 2 dinners in 2 nights who do you know, thank god that was followed by a big chuckle and he said I'm just kidding. By the way we had sailed with him twice previously as well.
