  1. Although I don't vouch for the intelligence of the gentleman in the pic, the photo is somewhat misleading.

If you look closely, you will see that the guy is sitting on the rail for the stairway which is about a foot or two inside the outer rail of the ship.

I noticed that too. He's not in danger of going overboard; his feet are on the outer rail and his butt is on the inner rail surrounding the stairwell.

Of course if he'd fallen backward down the stairwell, that fall might well have killed him via broken neck or head injury. Pretty stupid place to sit.

  2. His senior commitments COULD cancel out HIS vacation. They shouldn't cancel the entire family's. Let him stay home.

And FTR I agree with those who think it's absolutely ridiculous the way extra-curricular activities have taken over free time. Practices scheduled over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks should be optional, not required to stay on the team.

  3. BTW we've been fortunate to visit NY 4 times and not once have we been to a museum :( because it's not 'his thing' . I've not pushed this because there is nothing worse in doing something that you know your partner will hate. Maybe this time I should put it on the list and tell him that as I've done all the research I want to go to a museum - not sure which one, but I'm sure I'll find something after I've done all the trawling through the web :D

I'm simply astounded that you won't go to a museum by yourself, and that after all of the work you do planning the trips, he won't go to a museum even though it would make you happy.

  4. Then I got a new boss who "prefers" able bodied people and functional spouses. She also has enough income to prefer river cruises and cannot understand why it would possibly be any problem to cancel a "common" Carnival cruise. I am sick right now.

Talk to an attorney. She's discriminating against you because of your disability and creating a hostile work environment.

  5. There is no reason at all that service dogs can't be registered during the local licencing session with verification from a vet.

I'm a vet. It's not up to me to determine whether a dog is a true service dog. I can attest to the dog's health and temperament. I can't attest as to whether the dog is necessary to assist a person with a disability. That's for a professional in human medicine.

  6. OP should have checked this site before flying to US. Surprised preggers daughter's ob/gyn didn't know a letter was required.

Why should the OB/GYN know the policy? It's up to the prospective cruiser to look things like that up and let the doctor know what the cruise line requires.

  7. The train from Penn Station to EWR runs quite frequently and is an efficient way to get to the airport. Not sure about the logistics of getting from the pier to the station, though.

When I was at Newark in February, it took 45 minutes to get past TSA. Even the precheck people were stuck in the regular line because there weren't enough agents.

  8. Can you get her some kind of ID bracelet that she can't take off, with your names and cabin number on it, in case she wanders out of the cabin in the middle of the night?

If you think your mother can handle this and will enjoy it, go for it and I hope you have a wonderful time!

  9. St. Kitts: Brimstone Hill fortress, Caribelle Batik at Romney Gardens, the sugar train tour, and if you like glass, a visit to Glass Island Designz which used to be and maybe still is on Independence Square. There is also a nice little museum near the port and the town of Basseterre is interesting to walk around.

St. Maarten: There is a nice museum downtown, lots of interesting things and a small gift shop. Then Maho Beach to watch the airplanes, it's a lot of fun.

St. Lucia: A group of us from our roll call did a private tour by bus and boat, with lunch near the Pitons.

St. Thomas: I would avoid Charlotte Amalie shopping if possible. The main street is horribly crowded and the bargains really aren't, in a lot of cases. You can take the ferry to St. John, which is much more unspoiled.

Barbados: I rented a mini-moke and had an absolute ball driving around, getting lost, almost running out of gas out in the boonies (thanks to the guys at the bar who gave me directions to the gas station!), trying to read small road signs nailed to palm trees, repeatedly turning on the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal, but managing to stay on the correct side of the road. Saw everything I wanted to see, watched a bit of a cricket match, saw some sights I hadn't planned to see, and met a lot of nice local people too, one of whom was even nice enough to take a detour in his car and have me follow him back toward the port when I got lost in Bridgetown (had plenty of time to spare, too). I would totally do it again. Vroom vroom!

  10. My closest friend and her young adult son are boarding the Royal tomorrow for two weeks, with two scheduled stops in Turkey. She is anticipating that those will be cancelled. I will update if I hear from her.
