  1. Unfortunately, airlines (with the exceptions of Southwest) do NOT give future credit on missed flights...they typically charge a 'Change Fee' of between $200-$250 per ticket to rebook....if your flight was more than the change fee then that $$ is credited to new ticket....but you pay the 'going rate' on the new ticket, too, and if it is more expensive that original ticket, you pay that difference too.....the airlines have the public by the throat!! When we cannot use airline tickets, we NEVER cancel anymore...we are just 'no shows' as we refuse to let the airlines keep our ticket $$ then resell our seats and charge a new pax who books our seats - they are 'double dipping'....so we keep the reservation and just don't show up!!
I always fly Southwest and assumed other airlines have the same or similar policy. I should not have assumed. My apologies.
  2. Hey everyone! Me again. I just had to share this because you just won't believe it.

Since my cruise that I canceled a year ago, I had another cruise canceled by Carnival in November on the Liberty when she had her issues.

And that brings us to today. My wife and I were scheduled to leave for Hawaii on September 11. Unfortunately, we have to cancel due to our church flooding in Houston. We are the lead pastors, and we feel it is critical for us to be in this city helping those in need and restoring our church.

Just thought it would be interesting to you guys that followed my saga a year ago! It's crazy. Maybe I'm not supposed to cruise anymore [emoji23]

Believe me, I understand why you feel like perhaps you aren't meant to cruise anymore. We too had to cancel three cruises in a period of slightly less than two years due to sick elderly parents. We finally booked one and was able to go about 9 months ago. We had a great fine and we have another cruise coming up soon. Moral of the story: Three strikes doesn't always mean you are out. Prayers for all y'all in the Houston area.
  3. Anything is possible, but we will probably see a reduction in the rate of increase in consumer spending before we start seeing any decrease. That's one of the ways companies like Carnival and Royal Caribbean have leverage over us consumers: Since they're mass market suppliers and the mass market typically moves slowly because of its size, they get a rather clear signal that economic conditions are changing quite a bit in advance of things really beginning to go south. They then use that signal to tamp down their capitalization of the market. They're basically playing with us, making all the right moves to squeeze from us the most amount we're willing to spend. What they really need to worry about is when it isn't consumer sentiment that is changing but actual fundamentals that are changing, like entering a recession.
Like you said, we'll see. Happy cruising! :)
  4. Yes, but how do we know this is a peak? The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a new high on August 7, but is that the peak or just another stop on the way to 23,000? I just invested a bit of cash in a cruise line and before I did that I read a lot of analyst opinions. Yes, they could be wrong, but they're analysts because they have better insights into this than random others. And more of them are buying cruise lines right now than holding or selling. That's a clear sign that people who know don't see this as the peak, but rather as just another stop along the way to some distant peak.
I don't know that this is the peak, obviously. Nor does anyone know that it is not. I stated in my first post, "jmho." I don't have hard stats and probably couldn't interpret them if I did. I'm just going on common sense and observation. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. I just think that if prices continue going up many folks are going to look elsewhere, cruise less frequently, or stay home. Most of us (folks who cruise with Carnival) aren't wealthy. Again, jmho. But opinion is what drives this site, so I think I'm in pretty good company. :)
  5. I'm not sure that the cruise industry is that far down the business cycle, yet. A generalized and deep recession could turn a lot of businesses sour, of course, but barring that I think cruising isn't done yet.
No, the cruise industry isn't "done." It seems to be peaking right now. We all know that peaks are followed by valleys. Will that decline show up in a year, two years...? No way to predict that from the outside. I'm not sure those on the inside could even answer that with any accuracy. When genuine sales start showing up again, as they did a few years ago, and on a consistent basis, I think we'll have a pretty good idea the slide has begun.
  6. When the cruising market crashes, at some point in time, Carnival will have the upper hand for sure. There will be quite a few long faced financiers with scrap metal to sell.
I agree. What goes up must come down. If the cruising industry hasn't already peaked, it is close to it. JMHO. I look forward to the benefits of that "crash." I'm using the word crash for lack of a better term. It could be fast or a gradual decline.
  7. I have filed claims twice with Travel Guard and once with Travel Safe. Both are reputable companies and in all three instances I got all my money back. BUT - and this may or may not matter to everyone - there was significantly less documentation, medical records, etc... required with Travel Safe. At least that was my experience. Getting everything together to file a claim can be laborious, so to me, the less work required the better.

  8. Perspective I live in NYC during Sandy and Irene. Lost a lot but are prepared for it. Being on a rocking cruise ship during a cat 4 listing from side to side is scarier.

That's a rather interesting perspective. Firstly, I'm quite sure none of the affected ships are IN the hurricane. Secondly, I would think it would be preferable to be on a cruise that was extended because of a closed port than to have a home and family in an area directly hit by a hurricane. But that's just me.
  9. Horizon, and not because it will be a new ship, but because the shorter 6 day cruise following the 8 day cruise, to me, has a more interesting itinerary than the second leg of the Sunshine B2B. I would never want to do Grand Turk twice. Not a fan of GT. JMHO.

  10. Yeah, I would be devastated if the flight were cancelled for some reason. Its through frontier, I've never flown with them before. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I've never flown with Frontier, but I know that on the Southwest website you can check average delays and cancellations for each flight number. For example: flight #1325- 65% on time. Perhaps you can do this with Frontier.
  11. My cruise is Oct 29th thru Nov 5th. I have flown out of the MIA airport but had a later flight. Our group usually is off the boat by 8:30 and the port is less than 20 minutes to the airport I believe. If we missed it, we could always rent a car and drive home I guess.

Missing a return flight is definitely less disastrous than missing an outbound one... where cruising is involved.
  12. Flight is non stop and arrival is 9:40 am. I think the return flight is what I'm worried about. I found a super good deal on them and both flights are non stop. Vs driving for 20 hours each way!

While nothing can be guaranteed, 10:15 am is probably doable. You'll want to get off the ship as early as possible, of course, and handle your own bags, but you know that I'm sure. If there is a delay in the ship getting into Miami, or a delay in disembarkation, you might have a problem though. Unfortunately, that isn't foreseeable. Wishing you luck!
  13. I usually fly in the day before a cruise but. For my up coming cruise I have to work the day before. I live in Ky and leaving out of the MIA port. Do you guys think its ok to get a 7am flight into MIA the day of cruise? Also, the return flight is at 10:35 out of MIA, if we do a self assist and carry off our luggage, could we be to the airport in time to make this flight?

Are you departing or arriving at 7:00 am? If you are departing at 7:00 am, what time is your arrival? Do you have any connecting flights or is your flight non-stop?
  14. We are considering a cruise on the Glory the end of October. I didn't realize that 3 nights in will be Halloween. Its really not an issue, but our 9 year old son will be with us and I am wondering if they will do anything for the kids? He doesn't mind not being home to trick-or-treat as long as he can wear his costume. lol......What do you all think?

He can definitely wear a costume. So can you. Lots of folks, young and old, go all out on Halloween cruises. There will be a costume contest, some props and decoration on the ship, a few spooky desserts in the MDR. We've done Halloween cruises twice. They are a lot of fun.

  15. Thanks! Not really sure what I was looking for.....kind of a little leary about doing anything that isn't sponsored by Carnival. Call me crazy, but I guess you never know about safe or not. But, I was wanting information on what to do in Playa if not on an excursion. :)
Okay. I understand your question now. Yes, the ferry is safe. The risk involved would be in getting back to the ship late. If you do it, go early. The reason we did this trip backwards to what you are inquiring about is that we were staying at a resort near Tulum and wanted to spend a day at Cozumel. I've never done it while on a cruise, so I'm hesitant to say, yeah, you'll be fine. At forty-five minutes each way, plus time waiting in line, you're looking at probably 2 1/2 hours, plus whatever time you spend in Playa Del Carmen. Just be wary of the time and allow yourself plenty of time to get back to the dock at Cozumel and then time to catch a taxi back to the ship.
  16. Just looking for experiences from people who have taken the ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen. We have not done this and my husband is wanting to go to Playa while we are in Cozumel in a couple of weeks. He is just wanting to go to Playa (not necessarily on a Carnival sponsored excursion). Yay or Nay? Also, what did you do in Playa while there?

Have done the opposite, Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel. Yay or nay is a little vague, so I'm not sure what specifically you are wanting to know. It's roughly about a 45 minute ride. It's cheap, though I don't remember the price. The ride is a little rough. My wife got mildly sea sick. Lots to do in Carmen, shopping, beach, the usual. I hope this was helpful in some way.

edit: Playa Del Carmen is pretty nice. It's worth the trip if you are tired of Cozumel.

  17. We have actually cruised on Fascination and men did wear dark jeans (in good condition) to the MDR on Elegant Nights. ;)
I'm not doubting that a bit. I've seen lots of sub-code clothing that made it past the maître'd. I was just giving the OP a heads up that folks do sometimes get turned away. Is it likely they will make it in? Yes. Is it 100% guaranteed? No.
  18. You'll enjoy HMC! While we have done an excursion there, there really is no absolute need to. Great beach, walking, and eating the free picnic style lunch can easily fill up a day. Don't forget to try the BBQ jerk chicken. It's very, very good, and this coming from someone who isn't normally a fan of yard bird. Happy cruising!
