  1. They have to comply with the protocols established by the company.
  2. Carnival will of course have the last word but knowing other's experiences can be helpful to know. I don't consider that "relying on" anything, they are simply becoming informed.
  3. Yes but it's also good to know what the company would do if anyone had experience. Just another data point and the more data points the better.
  4. I don't think they are looking for a guess but rather are looking for first hand information from folks in a similar situation.
  5. Submitting the Application The Embassy/Consulates can issue emergency passports under very specific and limited circumstances. Emergency passports are normally limited in validity and cannot be extended. Furthermore, you must appear at the Embassy or Consulate in person, during business hours, to apply. In most cases, emergency passports can be issued on the same day. If you believe you have a qualifying circumstance, please book an appointment from here. Required Documents The documents and fee necessary to apply for an emergency passport are the same as those for a regular passport. Please click here to return to the requirements for all passport types. Notes For customers who are applying for an emergency passport at the Embassy/Consulate, please note that: The Embassy/Consulates do NOT store laptops or large luggage. Visitors carrying unauthorized objects will not be granted entry. Please see the full list of prohibited items. Replacing an Emergency Limited Validity Passport If you have already been issued an emergency limited validity passport and you need to replace it for a full validity passport, please follow the instructions below. Please note that this application can be submitted by mail. Your emergency limited validity passport must have been issued within the last year. Required Documents Form DS-5504 available online Your emergency limited validity passport One passport photograph Courier Delivery Fee The sections you quote do not pertain to closed loop cruises. The regulations that I cited do.
  6. Maybe not, but it is still a US citizen having an emergency and that is part of what the government is there for (and getting someone home who is having difficulty of some sort can certainly be seen as humanitarian). Here are the regulations that give us the closed loop exception (para 2). See paragraphs 9 and 10 for the waiver provisions: 22 CFR § 53.2 - Exceptions. | Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (e-CFR) | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (cornell.edu)
  7. DW is allergic to shellfish so I rarely eat it at home. Every now and then I'll have the market steam one and I'll eat it in the backyard. The lobster onboard isn't Maine lobster but it's ok for what it is.
  8. But are they saying it without qualification (or thinking about it)?
  9. It's too bad they aren't, the taxes and fees one pays for airfare doubles the cost of the ticket but those can't be deducted, either (unless of course the entire fare is a business expense).
  10. Yes, I am aware that sometimes deals are available that would make Oceania a possibility, but unfortunately I've never seen these deals when we are booking a cruise (we typically book about 18 months out, a last minute cruise like this isn't doable for us right now). But for grins I did check out your first link. The $4300 veranda was sold out, and the closest they had would be a Concierge class veranda at $7400. We aren't in a position to take anything longer than 7 days, so a 10 day cruise wouldn't work so I didn't look at that link. (And just for grins a cruise on Carnival to Bermuda during that time frame is $2608. Add in what we use and we're looking at $3900 or so for the week. I know- Oceania is known for higher quality but that isn't a selling point for me.)
  11. I specified if "I'm happy with..." so I wasn't assuming anything about anyone, simply talking about me. Frankly I've seen nothing the premium/luxury lines have to offer me, personally, that would entice me to book with them. The "better" doesn't matter to me. Now, if I really could book with them for what I would pay with one of the mainstream lines or even close to it I might consider it. Our week cost $5k or so all in for two people in a balcony for our last cruise and we feel that we received a good value for our vacation dollar.
  12. Carnival 47, Windstar 50. But yes, Carnival does attract a lot of young families and this also impacts people's decisions.
  13. According to Google the median income for Carnival cruise passengers is $99k per year. The median income for Windstar cruise passengers is $175k. I expect that the median income for Oceania's passengers is much more than $99k per year. This, more than anything else, probably plays the biggest role in people's choice of cruise.
  14. Can you order them from an online pharmacy? Possibly do a refill at a port along the way? Drive to a nearby state to have the script filled?
  15. If I am happy with a $20 steak why would I want to pay $50 for a steak? One could put forth the argument that the $50 steak is better for any number of reasons, but those arguments are subject to individual judgment.
  16. Absolutely right, but calling someone out when they are clearly in the wrong is a sure way to get them angry.
  17. I would want to hear it from Carnival that this was legitimate before cashing the check. I've heard of scams where legitimate looking checks are mailed and when they are cashed they are rejected for insufficient funds, but the issuer of the check then has the account info for the account where the check was cashed.

  19. I haven't noticed this as a problem lately. Doesn't mean it isn't still happening, of course, but it doesn't appear to be as wide spread as it once was.
  20. Since the poster mentioned a port of entry in Canada or Mexico presumably via vehicle. It happens a couple times per year around here (8 miles from the border)- someone (usually young but not always) goes up to Canada and loses their documentation. They present themselves to CBP at the border and after spending some time in secondary inspection they are allowed on their way. And even on cruises if one is left behind and/or has to leave during the cruise it isn't necessary to proceed to a Consulate and obtain an emergency passport. The regulations covering closed loop cruises contain provisions for the waiver of the passport requirement for emergencies and for humanitarian reasons. There will be a delay while things get sorted out (and the passenger is not typically involved in the sorting out process).
  21. I didn't think that I would like big ships and favored the smaller ships of 2,000 passengers or so (which I realize is large to many in this thread) but having sailed a couple of the larger ones I have to say they were surprising in many ways, not the least of which was how rarely they felt overly crowded. They certainly offer activities that the smaller ships don't offer. Does that mean that they are "better"? Nope.
  22. All well and good, but the analogy does leave something to be desired. I would be more willing to help a neighbor who was having their physical property stolen then I would be to help a company who is only losing out on some potential revenue (and having nothing really stolen). The conduct of the people tagging along was trashy, absolutely, but having tagalongs is probably common for public tours.
  23. We had a mix of documentation in our group for our last cruise and exit processing was very similar for both those with passports and those using ID/birth certificate. I would probably opt for that route since it involves no expenditure at all. One advantage of the passport card is that if they decide later to get passports it would be treated as a renewal so it could be done through mail for those over 16 at time of issue (or online, should they ever fully implement that). As for the possibility of there being a disruption to the cruise, there are provisions in the regulations that allow for the waiver of the passport requirement for emergencies or for humanitarian reasons, so any delay should be minimal.
  24. When we drive we always park at the port. The priciest was probably Manhattan, but the parking lot is secure and that in and of itself is worth the price of gold in NYC. At the end of the cruise you grab your luggage and go, no need to gather your luggage, lug it to where you parked and then go.
  25. As long as you aren't wearing anything prohibited you should be fine, which is: Not permitted: jeans, men’s sleeveless shirts, shorts, t-shirts, sportswear, exercise and athletic wear, shorts, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suit attire Shorts are not listed as acceptable for Elegant night, but as long as they are dressy shorts they'll probably be ok.
