  1. The only way to accomplish both goals, even with a twelve-hour port day, is with a car service. The trains are great but there aren't enough of them and they aren't fast enough on this particular route to do everything in one day. There are several car services highly recommended by folks here who use them.
  2. Capri will be crowded in June. One change to Hank's plan that I would suggest would be to get a taxi at the port and go up to Anacapri upon arrival, working your way down to Capri later in the day prior to leaving the island. Part of this is just the "start at the furthest point and work back" mentality, and part is experience with the crowds on the island. It's easier, in my experience, to get a taxi at the port for the long ride up to Anacapri than to get any transportation at all from Capri, because almost everyone else goes there first.
  3. I guess you can look at it as a "peace of mind" tax.
  4. The 6 euro bus takes you to your ship, but be sure it's going to your ship. If there are multiple ships boarding on the same day there will/may be distinct buses. The less expensive buses go to Largo della Pace where you change to the free port shuttle.
  5. Taxis will want 20 - 25 euro, if you can get them to take the fare.
  6. There aren't vendors waiting to sell you tours at the ports in Italy, just taxi drivers. Depending on what you're willing to spend you could arrange a trip like that with one of the taxis.

Naples is very easy to do on your own, there is an embarrassment of riches to choose from but once you do, we can help you see how to do it DIY. The ship docks right in the historic part of the city so if you want to see Naples, you just walk off and you're there. La Spezia is also a good DIY port, for seeing Cinque Terre. You can walk to either the ferry port or the train station from the port shuttle drop off point to get to the five villages.
  8. Check to be sure RCI will let you off the ship in time. Even with a private transfer you'd need to be on the road leaving Ravenna no later than 6:30 (and that's cutting it too close for my comfort, but maybe not for youers), before you book the flight check to see that they'll let you off that early.
  9. Yes, more flights (and even some direct ones) go into/out of Venice but also if people are booking these cruises hoping to see Venice, they have to add time on either before or after the cruise, so that's going to be their starting point for the cruise. It's not reasonable to see Venice from Ravenna and back in the same day.
  10. Because they sell these cruises as departing from Venice.
  11. Regional trains between Rome and Civitavecchia take between 65 minutes - 85 minutes, depending on the train and the number of stops it makes (between eight to twelve stops). The fare for these trains is 4,60 euro, or about $5 US. High speed "Frecce" trains take 47 minutes to make the trip and make no stops along the way. The fare for this train varies depending on when you purchase the ticket, it's possible to buy discounted tickets in advance (but note that they come with restrictions, you often cannot change them and there is no refund if you change your mind). The last minute walk up fare for these trains is 16 euro, or about $17.40 US. If you'll be in Rome for a few days prior to heading to Civitavecchia you can often get the economy fare of 12,90 euro (about $14 US) a day or two before the trip. One big note to be aware of: The regional trains from Rome to Civitavecchia do not depart from the main trackhead at Rome Termini station, they use regional tracks three blocks away, so you'll need to factor in the time and effort to make that walk with your luggage. Also note that if you are using a web site that quotes fares in US$ it is a reseller. They will add a fee to the purchase and it will be more difficult to make changes to the ticket if you need to. The official website is here: EN - Trenitalia
  12. There are lots of other restaurant options, it's just this one that I know requires reservations and is a "special occasion" type of place. If that's not what you're looking for you'll find plenty of choices. The trains run on-time-ish, if you get my drift. A few minutes late is not unheard of, given the size of the crowds on the platforms. You might consider the ferries as an option. It takes more time but is a more pleasant way to travel.
  13. Yes, absolutely, the overnight makes all the difference. The last trains leave the Cinque Terre villages around 9:30, so as long as you are seated as soon as dinner service begins you could enjoy dinner overlooking the water before heading back to Livorno. I would make those dinner reservations well in advance, especially if you want to eat at a place like L'ancora della Tortuga: Ristorante con vista | Monterosso Al Mare, SP | L'Ancora della Tortuga (ristorantetortuga.it) Dining in a place that like is an experience and it's not fast, but if you tell them what time you need to be on the train they can accommodate you. Or, if you're willing to spend the money, you can get a private transfer back and stay as late as you like. (I just looked, the last train from Monterosso departs at 21:55 - 9:55 PM, so if you're seated at 7 you'd be fine.)
  14. What kind of tour are you looking for? Ravello is a pretty small place, there's not much to "tour". Perhaps you're looking for transportation? By car it will take much longer to get there than by water, you might consider taking the ferry to Amalfi and getting a car or taxi from there up to Ravello.
  15. The high speed service is pretty comparable between Trenitalia and Italotreno.
  16. Florence is 90 km/55 miles from the port at Livorno. Best case in a bus is about 90 minutes. Before you sign up for this, be aware that the historic center of Florence cannot be entered by buses, all the HOHO buses do is drive around the edges, you must walk in from there. You can't really see anything from the bus. You can see the map of the HOHO lines here: Volta_depliant_firenze_Aprile 2023-tutti giorni-internet.cdr (city-sightseeing.it)
  17. I've been checking the boards and have only seen this mentioned regarding NCL. If it's a country's regulations, it would apply to all ships not just one line.
  18. Someone reported the same thing in Gibraltar on NCL in December: Not serving Alcohol while in Gibraltar - Norwegian Cruise Line - Cruise Critic Community And Greece as well: Norwegian Cruises in Greece, not serving alcohol in port? - Cruises Forum - Tripadvisor Why only NCL? I haven't seen reports of this from other lines.
  19. If your ship arrives to Civitavecchia at 6 they will have forced everyone off between 9 - 10 AM. You would have no problem getting off in time to make the 9:16 train. You could always take a later connection on to Milan to extend your transfer time. You won't need it but I understand that it would make you feel better to have some cushion. Trenitalia has another Frecce at 10:50, so you wouldn't have to wait long. Italotreno also has high speed trains between Rome and Milan. They don't service Civitavecchia but if you'd be buying two different tickets anyway, check them as well to get the best combination of timing and pricing for your trip. Ask both about family and group rates. Italy high speed train tickets| Italotreno.it - Official website
  20. You don't have to take a regional train, there are options. For example, the fastest routing is a Frecce to a Frecce, departing Civitavecchia at 9:16, arriving to Termini at 10:03, then departing Termini at 10:20 and arriving to Milano Centrale at 13:35. One benefit of this is that both trains will use the main trackhead at Termini, a regional train will leave you three full blocks from the main trackhead, where you'd get the train to Milan. The earliest you can get to Milan is 12:00 (this departs Civitavecchia at 7:02 and takes five hours - the change at Termini is 32 minutes, which is plenty of time to make the three block walk with luggage). EN - Trenitalia
  21. You cannot walk out of the port of Livorno from most ships, a few smaller ones can berth in places from which you are allowed to walk but I wouldn't count on that being the case.
  22. If you scroll down on this page you'll see information on the taxis. It's not cheap, but you can put up to seven people in it for the price. It really is an experience. Getting Around on Capri - Funicular and bus schedules and prices
  23. I have seen long lines for the funicolare, the one time I went over in the summer. There is no way to prebook it, however. My advice is that if you are planning to go to Anacapri in the same day, get a taxi (great fun to ride in) from the port to Anacapri upon arrival, then work your way back down throughout the day.
  24. There is also a bus option, similarly cumbersome. The bus depot is located 1.2 km/eight-tenths of a mile from the port ( Corso del Popolo 1310). It looks like you need to change buses en route but there are several departures each morning. Bus web site here: HomePage - Arriva Veneto Unfortunately, the bus company web site is only in Italian, but they have lines to Venice as well as to the airport: Orari e percorsi - Arriva Veneto
