  1. HI Anni,

Once again, thanks for all your effort this while on replying my questions. May God bless you.

Hi, thanks once again for your appreciation.

    1. The Schleswig-Holstein ticket does NOT include buses in Lübeck or anywhere else except the City of Hamburg

2 The Mecklenburg Vorpommern ticket does NOT include the the tram ride from Rostock Hbf to the City.

Both tickets can be used on all the local (red) trains in their areas

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  2. Thanks; yes, I believe it but I just like to get everything straight before I leave. Sometimes things look easier than they are (particularly when it comes to navigation) and I've learned to do a LOT of research.

Is there a place I could read more about cargo travel? If I weren't married, I might try it, but my husband is more upscale than me, and I know he would think I'm crazy if I suggested it. I AM, however, curious about it, so if you have time (and only if) I'd love to hear more.

You are smart to try a small cruise ship first. That's what we did (Oceania's Regatta. 788 pax) and despite the fact that I was a little leery of cruising at first, it turns out I love it. Oceania is not cheap, but it's a great line with great food, service, etc., and the number of pax was a big plus for me, as I'm not crazy about crowds. I will continue to cruise on the smaller ships as long as I can afford them. Then again, they go to many of the same ports as the larger ships, so maybe I'm just over-spending to see the places I want to see...

    Thanks again for the help.

Hi Ruth, you sound like me, I like to be sure I have everything straight in my mind before I go so that travel is a pleasure not a stress.

Glad you agree with our choice of a small ship. Like you I dislike crowds and that is one of the pleasures of a cargo ship; company of crew and other passengers (sometimes) if you want it and respect for your wish for solitude if you don't. Also more personal space than on a cruise ship.

If you would care to e-mail me on aussieinrostock@gmail.com I will let you have more details and some web sites.

    Happy cruising :)

  3. Hi Anni. Thanks so much for info; just wanted to follow up on what you told me. If I buy a Great Weekend ticket online, I do not have to buy anything more to get to Berlin from Warnemunde, right? In other words, the ticket covers the S-bahn trip to Rostock and then the RE trip to Berlin (through Schwerin if need be), right? I just hop on the train in Warnemunde with my ID and credit card used to purchase the ticket (and passport) and I'm good to go....and return!

Thanks. You are so helpful. Those cargo trips sound interesting, by the way.

    Ruth

    Hi Ruth,

You have it absolutely right. You sound as if you don't quite believe it but yes, its as easy as that!

The cargo ship voyages have been fantastic for me although I must admit they are not for everyone. As you can see I have done quite a few but this year I am trying a cruise ship for the first time to please my friend whom I met on my very first cargo voyage 10 years ago. I'm sure we will enjoy it, we have deliberately chosen a smaller ship, but I'm also fairly certain that sailing on freighters will be my first choice as long as I am able.

    Happy cruising :)

  4. We dock in Kiel and want to go to Hamburg to the Miniature Railroad Museum. Would you suggest the train, which involves switching to bus or metro in Hamburg - or would you rent a car in Kiel for the day and drive direct to the museum? We realize the car rental would be more expensive, but also want the maximum time to see the museum.

Car rentals in Kiel all seem to close at 6 PM. We are in port until 11 PM, so would like to not have the time restraint of driving back to Kiel by 6 PM. Do you know any car rentals that are open later? The major ones seem to be at the train station and wonder about a drop box for keys for a later return?

Appreciate all your wonderful info on this thread.

    Hi,

Thank you for your apprectiation. Unfortunately although I have been to Kiel a couple of times and know about the trains, and am also familiar with Hamburg and the Miniature Wunderland, it is not really my area and car hire in Kiel is something about which I know absolutely nothing. I would suggest that you try starting a thread on that subject eg Car Hire in Kiel, it would be more likely to attract the attention of someone who can give you the right answers.

However, I do know that to get from Kiel to the Miniature Wunderland you have to cross the city and knowing the traffic in Hamburg as I do plus the near impossibility of parking aound that area I doubt that driving would save you any time at all. It takes about 10mins to get from the Central Station to Baumwall by u-bahn and from there it is a 5min walk to Miniature Wunderland.

Hope someone else can be of more help.

    Happy Cruising :)

  5. Ok, Anni, I'm the person who will be going to Berlin from Warnemunde on a Great Weekend ticket.

Does the Warnemunde lighthouse have a working light that I might be able to see from the port?

Thank you SO much for this help. I really appreciate it!

Hi Roothy, Oops, I missed something!!:o

The Warnemunde lighthouse is a working light which can be seen about 20 nautical miles (35klms) out to sea. It is one of the oldest and most important on the Baltic coast.

    For more information see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warnemünde_Lighthouse

And thank YOU for your kind words of appreciation, it makes it all worthwhile.

  6. rostocker.....Is Rostock in the area from which Catherine the Great came? Thank You for so much information.:)

    Hi, thanks for your appreciation.

Catherine the Great was born in Stettin, Prussia. Her father, Prince Christian Augustus of Anhalt-Zerbst, was a general in the Prussian service and at the time of her birth was military commandant in Stettin.

After WWll the Polish border was moved west and Stettin became Szczecin in Poland. It is about 3hours by train from Rostock and the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Day Ticket can be used to get there.

    Happy cruising :)

  7. Ok, Anni, I'm the person who will be going to Berlin from Warnemunde on a Great Weekend ticket. I just want to make sure I understand what I need to do here. My ship docks at 8 and since Oceania usually docks early and uses (I think) their projected "docked and cleared" time as arrival time, I would think I could get off at 8:15. I walk to the train station (thanks for info on your site) and buy a Great Weekend Ticket which allows my husband and I to get from Warnemunde to Rostock to Berlin on any RE train. (I simply buy a Great Weekend ticket, right, without having to specify where I'm going? Can I use a ticket machine there in Warnemunde? Will it accept a chip-less credit card? If not, there IS a counter in the station, right, that I can go to? Would you know if the ticket machine has an English option?) Anyway, continuing with my scenario and questions, I hopefully make the 8:37 train to Rostock, use your info to find the platform for the next train to Berlin and hopefully make the connection (think it's 9:07, but forget). Once in Berlin, I can use the ticket for public transportation there (although we'll probably just take the Hop On bus, since my husband's feet aren't as energetic as mine!) If we DO take the metro, do I just wave the ticket, or what? Are there special lanes or anything?

I will probably take the 4:45 train back to Rostock, and then a train to Warnemunde, just to allow time for unforeseen emergencies, since I don't want the ship to leave for Bornholm without us! (I think the ship takes our passports, so being without one and trying to get to a Danish island would ruin my day!)

Oh, other questions: Is there food for purchase on RE trains or should I get dinner in the Bahnhof? Does the Warnemunde lighthouse have a working light that I might be able to see from the port? What is the port web site, by the way? I'm still trying to figure out how many ships will be in port on the day we're there (Aug. 12).

Thank you SO much for this help. I really appreciate it!

    Hi Roothy,

    1. You can use the machine to buy a ticket but it will not accept the US chipless card, only the 'chip and pin' type. There is a ticket office on the station but the better alternative is to buy on-line and print out before you leave home or have cash. The machines all have touch screens with an English option. See 'How to buy on-line' on my web site.

    2. If you make the 8:37 the next train is the 9:07 to Hamburg via Schwerin, change in Schwerin to the 10:16 to Berlin. The next train from Rostock direct to Berlin is the 10:34. If, by some miracle, you could make the the 8:07 you might catch the 8:34 direct to Berlin, just 6mins in Rostock but it is possible.

    3. There are no barriers etc. on the trains, metro or buses. On the trains there is a ticket inspector. If you bought your ticket on-line he will also want to see the ID (credit card, passport etc.) which you nominated when buying; otherwise just the ticket. Don't forget to fill in the name of the principal traveller. On the metro and buses it is an honour system, you only produce your ticket when inspectors do a random check.

    4. If you miss the 4:45 don't panic! You can always take the ICE direct to Warnemunde at 6:13 and pay the standard fare. Expensive but better than missing the ship.

    5. I would NEVER go ashore in a foreign country without my passport. As far as I know you cannot be denied your passport if you ask for it, you just have to hand it back when you return on board.

6.There are only snacks from a machine on RE trains but there is a great range of eateries, both eat-in and take-away in Berlin Hauptbahnhof.

    7. The official website for the Port of Rostock (Warnemunde Cruise Terminal) is

    www.rostock-port.de/en/cruise-shipping/port-calls/2012-port-calls.html

I would not trust any other, they are often incomplete. There are two ships scheduled for August 12th, Marina and Norwegian Sun.

Most ports have an official web site with an English option (English being the universal language used at sea), just enter Port of............ into your search engine.

    Happy cruising :)

  8. The bahn.com doesn't seem to give you single fare ticket prices. I've found a website that does. I plugged in Kiel to Plon to see how much a fare would be so that we could take the 8:44 train. The train arrives in Plon at 9:13 so as Anni said that takes you past the 9:00 limit for the Sch-Hol ticket to kick in. A single one-way fare to Plon is showing as 6.30 euros per person. Then the Sch-Hol ticket would get you the rest of the way to Lubeck and back to Kiel. So if we manage to get to the station in time (looks to be about a 20 minute walk if we dock at Ostseekai and hopefully we can get off at 8:00) this is an option to get us to Lubeck by 9:52 instead of 10:32. Hey, every 40 minutes counts!!

    http://www.kvg-kiel.de/en/fares/tickets-prices/monthlyticket.php

Go to the right hand side of the home page and fill in the trip details.

    Lynn

Hi Lynn, thanks very much for that useful info. KVG is the Kiel local public transport company. I tried everything DB had but never thought of that one. At that price the extra won't break the bank and as you say, every minute counts.

    Happy cruising :)

  9. Thanks Anni for your reply. I understand that there is another ticket, which call SH tariff Kleingruppenkarte (mini group day ticket). EUR 32,20 up to 5 person. is applicable as well..

What is the difference between the SH tariff Kleingruppenkarte and Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket ?

Hi, the difference is very little.

    1. SH Tarif Kleingruppenkarte - valid for one day on all regional trains and buses in Schleswig Holstein only, also on direct journeys to and from Hamburg. Not valid on public transport within Hamburg.

    2. Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket - valid for one day on all regional trains in Schleswig Holstein, Mecklenburg Vorpommern and direct journeys to and from Hamburg, also valid on public transport within Hamburg.

#1. is a blanket price; €32.20 for any number of people up to 5

#2. starts at €26 and rises in price according to the number of people.

    For 3 people #1 costs €32.20 and #2 costs €32.

#1 is designed to cover the areas served only by buses as well as those with train stations.

There is no difference in the conditions ie. neither are valid on weekdays before 9am.

The SH Kleingruppenkarte cannot be bought on-line.

  10. Hi Anni, please omit the above questios.. I have made some amendment to my questions:

    1. I will buy the lander ticket: Landerticket Mecklenburg- Vorpommen ticket 27 EURO and also Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket32 EURO. (3 of us travelling) Should I buy ticket online now? Any fare difference if I buy it now and buy direct when I reach Warnemunde/ Kiel?

    2. Anni, how would you recommend our transportation during our time in Lubeck? Should we get a bus tour or get a day pass or something?

    3. Any MUST SEE places in lubeck besidesold town, Marienkirche? I know Lubeck is being called "Northern Switzerland" .. so I guess the greatest part of it is the scenery.. where can I see that?

    4. If i take the Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket travelling from Kiel to Lubeck, the RE train departs Kiel at 8:44am, that means the Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket is not valid?? since its before 9am, unless I travel after 9? That will be quite time wasting because my ship only dock at Kiel until 5 pm.

    Thanks Anni for your help.

    Hi,

    1. The tickets you intend to buy are unlimited and the price does not change however or whenever you buy them.

    2. The best way to see Lubeck is to walk! Otherwise you miss many of the lovely, picturesque little side streets which are well worth looking out for as you walk down the main streets. Lubeck is very compact, I have mobility limits but can walk from the railway station to the other side of the city, direct, in about half an hour. There are buses into the city but I'm afraid that I have no idea where the bus stop is, I have always walked. A bus back to the station would save time, any bus marked Bahnhof.

    3. There are so many places to see the best way is to browse the official web site, it also has a good map which is very detailed if you enlarge to 150%.

    www.luebeck-tourism.de/

I have never heard Lubeck itself referred to as 'Little Switzerland', it is a medieval city. This tag is sometimes given to the state of Schleswig Holstein by cruise tour operaters but I feel it is a bit exaggerated. However, the scenery between Keil and Lubeck is very nice.

    4. There is very little difference between the RE and the RB. RE is a little faster as the RB has more stops. Docking at 8:00 and planning to catch the 8:44 is very optimistic, I would think the 9:04 would be much more likely especially if you have to get tickets. However, if you can make the 8:44 the most cost effective way is to get an Sch-Hol ticket as planned and then single tickets to Plön to cover the time before 9:00.

    Hope this helps

    Happy cruising :)

  11. Thanks so much for the info! Our travel dates will be: arrive in Berlin on July 29 for cruise leaving July 31. Cruise ends in Warnemunde Aug. 11.

We are now thinking about going to Munich instead of Berlin after the cruise. Do you know if we can take the train from Warnemunde/Rostock directly to Munich central station, or will we have to go to Berlin and change trains? Also, would it be more economical to purchase a rail pass?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, so sorry to have missed this question, when there are a lot of posts on the same day it is very easy to miss one. (My excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

The daily ICE from Warnemunde does normally go straight through to Munich but on your date, 31/08, it will start at 6:24 in Rostock which I assume would be far too early.

The next best option is to go via Hamburg. The ICs from Rostock at 10:25, 12:43 and 14:25 all make good connections with an ICE to Munich. Total travel time from Warnemunde just over 9 hours. Travel time to Munich via Berlin is longer unless you can use the ICE.

I don't think there would be any advantage in a rail pass but you would be better advised by a USA web site on this as rail passes once you are in Europe are different, tourists get a better deal buying in their home country! A limited number of discounted standard fares are for sale on-line from 92 days before the date of travel. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/en

Once again, apologies for the delay

  12. Hi Anni, Thanks for your reply. Just few more question,

    1. if i get off on the 5th stop, Marienehe, and take the #1 or #5 tram, May i know which direction should i take to the city?

    2. Is the train station from Schewerin back to Rostock is in platform 2?

    3. How far is the Schwerin train station from Market Place. Just want to estimate my shopping time if I walk from Market Place to the Schwerin train station. Just too afraid to miss the train back to Rosstock - Warnemunde.

    Hi,

    1. Cross the tram tracks and take the tram travelling in the same direction as the train ie right to left as viewed from the overhead bridge. #1 should be signed 'Hafenallee' and #5 'Südblick'

    2. The Rostock train usually leaves from platform 2 in Schwerin but it is as well to check the overhead departure board just inside the main entrance. Also make sure that the one you check is the RE (red train) not the IC (grey train).

    3. I always allow at least 20mins to walk back but you can time yourself on the way to the castle as the route passes through the market place.

If you do miss the train, don't panic! You could catch the IC at 18:37, pay the full fare-20euros pp and still get back before 21:00.

    Happy cruising

  13. Hi Anni! We finalized our flights today, and will be arriving in Berlin at 8:25 a.m. on July 29 (Sunday). Will we be able to take a train from the new airport to Rostock? I looked on the website for Rail Europe, and it looks like there is a train #4356 at 10:45 from Berlin Hbf. Is that the main train station in Berlin?

There is another one #18914 at 11:20, leaving from Berlin Schoe. flug, going to Berlin Hbf, then transfer to #4358 to Rostock.

Thanks in advance for your help! Your tips and information to everyone is so helpful. :)

Hi, Thank you for your appreciation. I'm happy to hear your plans are going OK.

The latest info is that you will have to take the RB from the airport to Berlin Hbf (main station) and then the RE to Rostock from there.

The train station is right under the new aiport terminal and the trains to Berlin leave every 15mins taking 30mins to the Hbf.

Ignore the #180914 as Berlin Schoe.flug will have ceased to exist after June 3 when the new Berlin Brandenburg opens.

The REs to Rostock are as you noted, #4356 at 10:45 arrive Rostock 13:04 and #4358 at 12:45 arrive Rostock 15:23.

The 10:45 might be a bit of a squeeze, I would aim for the 12:45 but I hate to be rushed, especially when navigating an unfamiliar station. Berlin Hbf is a fantastic place, built on 6 levels with plenty of shops and eateries, all open on Sundays too.

    Happy travelling :)

    Anni

    www.travelanni.webs.com

  14. Hi Anni, thanks for all your reply and posts. Please advice on my trip below if this is ok. Our ship will dock at Warnemunde at 6am to 10pm.

3 of us here will get the Landerticket Mecklenburg- Vorpommen ticket for 27 EURO. However, we will depart early at 8:22am to Rostock, therefore we will get the 1.80 single ticket per person.

    1. We will arrive at Rostock Hauptbahnhof, then take #5 or #6 tram to Neuer Markt for the Marienkirche. Then, walk up to the pedestrian street to Kropeliner Tor. Walk around (buy another ticket to catch the tram) and take the 13:07 train (plantform 6) to Schwerin.

Q1: Do you think we should take a guided walking tour? Is yes, may I know where can I get the tour?

Q2: Since 3 of us here, do you think we should buy group day ticket for Rostock?

Q3. Any other worth place to see at Rostock besides Marienkirche? Really not sure where to go..

Q4. After reading your blog, I understamd there is few station to catch the tram to the city. Which train station you recommend the most for the best scenery and view?

    2. After Rostock, we will go to Schwerin at 13:07, walk around city and to the castle. Return : Take the 17:53 train back to Rostock, (change platform 1 or 2 at Rostock) -> Warnemunde.

Q1.After my arrival at Schwerin main station and walking around the city and castle, if time permits, I wish to go for some shopping.. where do you suggest? Schwerin Mitt?

    Thanks Anni.

Hi, Thank you for your appreciation. Good plan, just a couple of comments with my answers.

    1. The Historical Society is offering a walking tour on most days, depending on having an English speaking guide available; notice board in the window indicates if there is one or not. No booking necessary, starts from the Kropeliner Tor at 11:00 and finishes at Neuer Markt approx 12:00, cost 5euros pp.

    2. If you only intend to go into and out of the CBD once then a group ticket is not a saving unless you have 4 people.

    3. Rostock's most interesting sights are its buildings so you can see most things, from the outside at least, between the Neuer Markt and Kropeliner Tor. The others are covered on the walking tour.

    4. I would say the most interesting way to get into the city is to get off at the 5th stop, Marienehe, and take the #1 or #5 tram. (please note there was a mistake in my instructions, after crossing the overhead bridge you turn left to the tram stop, it is now corrected)

In Schwerin the best 'ordinary' shopping is in the Mall at Mitte. From the rear entrance, top level of the Mall you can cross the car-park to Schwerin Mitte Station and catch the train at 17:50. However if you are after souvenirs etc. then the pedestrian streets around the Market Place are better.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  15. Anni,

Thank you for your website with all it's links.

I decided to fly in and out of Berlin from Copenhagen for a day so I won't be wondering should I or shouldn't I from the cruise, I already will have.

I noticed that there is a lighthouse in Warnemude, is this a good place to visit to take pictures from?

I'm thinking of going to Schwerin because that castle looks like something I have to see in person. Is 3 hours enough time to see the castle and gardens, and cathedral? If longer is needed, how late are things open in Rostock? Which is the better place to eat a meal?

    Thanks for all your help.

    Hi, thanks for your appreciation.

The lighthouse is open to the public from 10am to 7pm daily and a great place from which to take photos.

Schwerin - please bear in mind that the walk to/from the station is 15-20mins each way. 3 hours would be enough time to walk around the sights you mention but not long enough to go inside the castle and cathedral or tour the grounds properly so it would be better to spend more time in Schwerin. With a Mecklenburg Day Ticket you do not have to make a decision in advance on your return train so you could take more time if you need it and skip Rostock if necessary.

Museums etc in both Rostock and Schwerin are open until 6pm (closed Mondays) and shops until 8pm (closed Sundays)

Both cities have excellent restaurants and cafes but my personal favourite is the one in the Orangery at Schwerin Castle. Good food, lovely surroundings and great views of the lake; fabulous outside area, perfect if the weather is good.

    Happy cruising :)

  16. Hi Anni - Please tell me if this is doable: Pre-cruise: planning to fly USA to Berlin - upon arrival, take taxi to train station and take train to Rostock. Stay in Rostock for a couple of days before cruise leaves Warnemunde. Will going straight to Rostock be too exhausting, or do you think we should spend the night in Berlin, then go to Rostock the next day (via train)?

Also, post-cruise: staying in Berlin for a few days to sight-see. The plan is to take ICE train from Warnemunde on Sat. - leave at 8:31, arrive Berlin 11:48. Are these the correct times for travel from Warnemunde to Berlin on a Sat.?

    Appreciate all your help!:)

    Hi, very 'do-able' indeed!

As you plan to spend a few days in Berlin post-cruise I would be inclined to travel to Rostock on the same day. Depending on your flight arrival time in Berlin of course. The RE trains depart Berlin every 2 hours, the ICE usually departs at 18:13 Sun - Fri, not Sat.

You did not give the dates on which you would be travelling but I guess it is during the summer months when the normal departure time of the ICE from Warnemunde on Saturdays is 9:01, arrive Berlin 11.48.

However, there are track works this summer affecting the ICE but if you would care to give me your exact dates of arrival in Berlin and departure from Warnemunde I will check for any changes and pass them on, they are already gazetted.

    Happy cruising :)

  17. Hi Anni,

So Amazed to see all your comments and suggestions towards others' planning. You are really helpful. Would like you to suggest if I should go to Lubeck or Hamburg if my ship dock at the Kiel Otsekai port from 8 am to 5 pm? There are 3 of us here travelling together. I will go to Rostock and Schwerin when my ship dock at Warnemunde, however, my ship will dock at Kiel next day.. I understang there is group ticket for 3 ..please advise. Thanks Anni..

    :)

Hi, it depends on what you want to see really but I would suggest Lübeck. I love Hamburg but it is really just another big city, nice to explore if you actually dock there or want to visit something specific like the Miniature Railway. There is a Lübeck page on my blog, just ignore the 'how to get there from Warnemunde' instructions. It is easier from Kiel anyway. Directions from the station into town are the same.

Trains to Lübeck - an hourly RE service (8:44 etc) which takes 1hr:08mins or an hourly RB service (8:04 etc) which takes 20 mins longer. Return trains - RE 14:06 etc, RB 14.28etc.

Trains to Hamburg - an hourly RE service (8:21 etc) which takes 1hr:19mins. Return trains - RE 14.20etc.

The ticket you refer to is valid on all these trains, details below. You can buy on line (for details see the 'how to' page on my blog, just change the ticket name, departure point and destination to suit) from a ticket machine, ticket office or on the train.

  18. Are there ATM's available at the station or in town? I find that is the best way to get Euro's when traveling. Better exchange rate than at home.

    Thank you

Hi, unfortunately there are no ATMs at the station in Warnemunde. The nearest to the ship is in the Chocolate Shop on the Alter Strom (street alongside the water, through the station and over the bridge) It was rumored that there is to be another one at Karls Pier 7, will let you know if this happens

There are ATMs at street level in both entrances to the Central Station in Rostock.

If you are visiting either Helsinki or Tallin before arriving in Germany it is probably more convenient to get your Euros there.

    Happy cruising :)

  19. Anni...your website is fabulous!

We'll be in Warnemunde from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. My plan was to take the bus or train to Bad Doberan and do the Molli train. Then go from Bad Doberan to Rostock and see the sights, then back to Warnemunde for a look around town then back on the ship for dinner. We're travelling with friends who prefer to take it a bit slower and I'm thinking they might want to forego the Bad Doberan/Molli train portion. With a long day in port, would we be able to fill our time looking around Rostock and Warnemunde?

Hi Lynn, many thanks for your appreciation of the website. I am glad it is helping people with their planning.

You are among the few lucky ones having such a long day in Germany. I am sure you could fit in your plans although it would be a full day. I would recommend the earliest bus to connect with the Molli, train to Rostock and train back to Warnemunde. This would take advantage of your possibility of an early start.

Nothing much happens in Rostock before 10am but if a later start and a leisurely day is what you want and you like walking there is plenty to see in the two places and some lovely coastal walks in Warnemunde.

    Happy cruising :)

  20. Just a quick question that you have probably answered but I can't find ...

Can I buy train tickets to Rostock with my American credit card? More specifically, can I use Discover or am I limited to Visa/MC?

    Thanks again!

Hi, sorry to have to tell you that a card cannot be used in most machines in Germany unless it is the type with a chip and pin number. American Visa/MC are accepted where you are 'served by a human' so to speak and can sign for the purchase. It is wise to have a small amount of local cash (euros) as machines do not accept any cards for ticket purchases under a certain amount and cash is also needed for rest rooms, bakeries, street stalls etc.

Maybe other cruisers would like to comment on their experience in this area as being a resident the problem does not arise for me.

    Happy cruising, :)

  21. Hi Anni,

You recommended to visit Marienkirche at Neuer Markt first and then join the 11 AM walking tour. Can you you let me know the tram no. 5 & 6 are coming from where to where via Rostock hbf and the name of stops from HBF to Neuer Markt. Thank you.

    cheers

    Stephen

    Hi,

Usually the #5 tram is travelling from Sudblick to Mecklenburger Allee via Rostock Hbf. The #6 tram is travelling from Mensa to Neuer Friedhof via Rostock Hbf.

On either line the stops are Hbf, Leibnitzplatz, Steintor and Neuer Markt.

There is nothing on the tram to show where it came from and although the final destination is shown on the front of the tram it can change slightly on the #5 according to the time of day so it is better to forget the origin and destination and simply go by the number.

You cannot go wrong if you just catch a #5 or #6 from Tram platform A, direction City and sit where you can see the electronic board, in the front of each car, which lists the next stop in large letters and the following three in smaller letters as you go along. The market place is instantly recognisable when you get there.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni
