  1. thank you for the reply

i believe its a standard return ticket €158 for 2 people 1 class

+5,50 x2 for hvv grossbereich hamburg

it is just "rostock ->hamburg" not rostock warnemunde or rostock hbf, which is causing the confusion

    many thanks for your help

In that case it denotes that the ticket is valid from/to any station in the Rostock s-bahn area which includes Rostock Warnemunde.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

    Happy cruising :)

  2. howdy,

i ordered some tickets and am trying to understand if something got lost in translation

i ordered tickets through bahn.de for a warnemunde-hamburg round trip 27.6.11 +2 hamburg all day transit passes

the tickets came as rostock-hamburg +2 HVV all day transit passes

    2 questions:

1 is this normal or do i need to contact bahn.de

2 do i need to exchange the transit passes?

    many thanks

    -jared

Hi Jared, Ì am not quite clear as to what you have, standard return tickets or Mecklenburg Lander tickets.

Standard return tickets + HVV transit passes would have cost around €73 each or special price for nominated trains €51 each. Do they give departure as Rostock Warnemunde or Rostock Hbf ?

A Mecklenburg Lander Ticket + HVV transit pass would have cost €20 for one person plus €3 for each additional person. This ticket covers travel anywhere in Mecklenburg after 9am and also includes Rostock-Hamburg and HVV transit passes.

If you feel you have not got what you ordered you can contact a DB agency in your own country by phone. The numbers can be found on the DB English pages

I hope this is of help.

    Happy cruising :)

  3. Hello Anni!

My wife and I will be on the Emerald Princes and will arrive in Warnemunde

at 7AM Sunday Sep 2, 2012. My wife has a niece in Waren. How difficult would it be to make a trip to visit her and still have time to see Warnemunde and Rostock? (Mostly I want some good beer and a bratwurst!!!):D:D

Hi, Waren is on the main line between Rostock and Berlin. At present the service is two hourly and the journey takes around 55mins but there is a rumour that the line is to be up-graded and so by Sept 2012 who knows!

On the present timetable you could be in Waren by 9.30am, spend 3 hrs there; be back in Rostock by 1pm and take a look around during the afternoon; then, depending on your sailing time, spend the evening in Warnemunde, where you will find good beer and bratwurst.

    Happy planning, :)

    Anni

  4. Anni, you are fantastic. Your recommendations are perfect for our needs. Is it possible we will see you while we are in Warnemunde? Thank you so much for taking the pains you do in helping us travelers the way you do.

    Bill

Bill, thank you for your kind words. I really enjoy helping others to share my adopted home. I volunteer with the Rostock Historical Society and can be found in their HQ, the Kropeliner Tor, between 10am and 6pm every day on which there are cruise ships in port, answering questions and chatting to visitors in English.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  5. Hi Anni: Reading your posts, when returning to Rostock from Schwerin we take tram 5 or 6 the 5th stop is where you are located Kropeliner Tor. Can we see all the interesting site from there after saying hello

    Dave

Hi, answer is yes, its a good starting point to walk from one end of the city to the other and then catch a tram back to the station. Will fill you in on the route to take when I see you. By the way, we often hang around a little later than 6pm on busy cruise days.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  6. Dear Rostocker. My wife and I will be arriving in Warnemunde on 16 August 2011 on the Celebrity Constellation. The ship will be in port from 9am to 11:59pm. We are 80 years old and would like to take an easy tour of the sights. My wife can walk 30-60 minutes then a short rest. Stairs are ok if not too many. What can you suggest that will allow us to appreciate the beauty of the area and not be too tired? Maybe something in the order of 6 hours? Thank you.

    Bill

Dear Bill, Rostock and Warnemunde are both reasonably flat and easy for walking. My suggestion for you would be:-

Take the train into Rostock as early as possible (I note that you dock at 9am but as you are coming from Amsterdam there will be no immigration checks etc.) The station is about 500m from the terminal building and trains depart every 10 mins for the 25 min journey to Rostock Hbf (Central Station) From the Hbf take tram #5 or #6 into the City. Get off at the 5th stop (Kropeliner Tor) and walk up beside the Radisson Hotel to the big brick tower which is actually the Kropeliner Tor, one of the city gates. This is a good starting place to walk back through the City or from the Kropeliner Tor you can take a 1 hour walking tour of the main sights (guided by a British ex-pat), starting at 10.30am, cost 5euros pp. I know that the guide takes care to avoid steps wherever possible and the speed is more like a leisurely stroll than a walk! This tour ends at the market place where there is a good selection of cafes and restaurants, both indoor and outdoor. After lunch there is time for a look around and a bit of shopping before taking a boat trip back to Warnemunde. The boats leave the city harbour on the river at 2.15, 3.00 and 3.15. Cost 8 euros pp. The trip downriver takes about 40 mins and is a nice alternative to the train.

Warnemunde on a summer's evening is not to be missed. It is a compact little seaside town with a long, wide promenade; quaint little cobbled back streets; plenty on souvenir shops and lots of cafes, restaurants and bars mostly with tables on the pavement. And you are only 5 mins from your ship!

Hope this has given you a few ideas. If you have any more questions please ask. We look forward to seeing you in our beautiful, interesting city.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  7. First, we're docking in Rostock - Berth LP41, so what would be the best way to get to the start of the walking tour?

Also, is there any way we could do both Wismar and Schwerin, or would that take more time than we have available? Maybe a quick walk through the castle and gardens and then on to Wismar?

Finally, I've read your previous posts about buying the rail pass online ahead of time to cover five of us, can we also buy the single ticket the same way or do we need to do that day of at the station?

    Cheri

Hi Cheri, sorry I forgot you were docking in the Port, I can only plead jet-lag.

I believe that Celebrity puts on a shuttle bus from the Port to the City, it would be worth asking. Otherwise the s-bahn station, Seehafen Nord, is 10-15 mins walk from the ship. Trains depart for Rostock Hbf at 6 mins past the hour, then take tram #5 or#6 to Kropeliner Tor (5th stop). I know that the walking tour is starting a little later on 24th to accommodate people catching the 10.06 train. The same Historical Society does a slightly longer private tour for groups of 6 or more starting at the railway station. You can find out more by e-mailing them at gwrostock@gmail.com It would still give time to catch the 13.06 to Wismar.

I'm afraid that the train schedules would only give time to do Rostock/Schwerin, Rostock/Wismar (and possibly Bad Doberan) or Schwerin/Wismar but not all three in the time available; and Warnemunde would be very difficult to fit in although an evening stoll might just be possible if you are willing to take a taxi back to the ship.

Sorry I did not make myself clear on the tickets. The best option is two Lander Tickets, first ticket €20 for one person + €3 per person for up to five persons = €32 and second ticket €20 for one person. So both can be bought on-line. A bit complicated I know but hope that makes it clear.

If I can be of any further help with train times etc. once you have decided on an itinerary please ask.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  8. Anni

I have read all your tremendously helpful posts, and all the alternatives sound great. However, we have our one day in May, off the Constellation (and I thank you for informing us that we will dock in Rostock, rather than Waremunde), and need to decide how best to spend it. We are six, very active adults, and we love to walk. Should we do Rostock and Schwerin? Or Rostock and Wismar? Or one of the other cities you've mentioned in your posts? We prefer to spend our time walking around towns, marketplaces, gardens, we're not that interested in spending our time indoors at churches or museums. Can you give me some advice? Thank you so much for all your advice.

    Cherikm

HI, sorry for the delay, have just arrived back from visiting family in Australia.

The choice between Schwerin and Wismar is really personal. The trip to Schwerin is longer and the trains are only two-hourly whereas trains to Wismar leave every hour. The main attraction in Schwerin is the castle interior but the gardens and park are very nice too. Wismar is a place for walking around looking at very old, beautifully restored buildings. There are museums of course but to me all the interest is outside. On the same train line is Bad Doberan which has a minster church and the ruins of the monastery within the original grounds, great for walking. The little town is interesting too and the Molli Bahn runs right down the middle of the main street. Better than riding the Molli is to sit and have a drink literally within touching distance as she chuffs through, bell ringing to clear the traffic!

My day would be:- an early walk along the mole at Warnemunde; 9.37 train to Rostock Hbf, tram No 5 or 6 to Kröpeliner Tor where you can join a 1hour walking tour of the city (guided by an English ex-pat) cost $5pp, 10.30 start, no booking required; 13.06 train to Wismar and if you have time break the return journey at Bad Doberan.

All your travel would be covered by Lander Tickets. For a party of six the cheapest option is one ticket for 5 persons, €32 and one single, €20. The normal return ticket to Wismar would be €21 each plus tickets on the s-bahn so it is a considerable saving.

This plan is, of course, my personal preference I but hope it helps with your planning.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  9. Hi Anni,

We are arriving on the Constellation Rostock port LP41.What is the best way to get to the city of Rostock from the port?

    Thank You

Hi, The trains from the port station, Rostock Seehafen Nord (10-15 min walk from the ship) depart at 6 minutes past the hour arriving Rostock Hbf at 24 minutes past. Trains from Rostock Hbf depart at 34mins past the hour until 9.34pm. From the Hbf you can either walk or take a No5 or No6 tram into the city centre.

I understand that Celebrity usually put on shuttle buses into the city, this would be worth investigating. Otherwise a taxi is an option.

There are buses but they do not run direct into the city. The trip is much longer and involves a more dificult change to either a tram or bus in the suburbs.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  10. Hi Anni: You have been so much help in planning our trip. Where are you working in Rostock. We would love to see you when we return from Schwerin through Rostock

    Dave

Hi Dave, sorry for the delay, I have just arrived home (Rostock) from a stay with my family in Brisbane, Australia. Back 'in harness' now and looking forward to the cruise season.

Happy to have been of help and would love to meet you, I work in the Kröpeliner Gate which is the big brick tower at the end of the pedestrian mall. We are open from 10am to 6pm and you will find me there chatting to visitors in English about the history of the city.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  11. As part of our cruise Warnemunde is a port. So far everyone on our cruise is heading into Berlin for the day. In the past we spent a fair amount of time in Berlin, so we don't plan to go there when we dock at Warnemunde. Rather we are planning to just spend a casual day walking through Warnemunde and Rostock. I'd like to take the train one way, but a boat the other. So far I haven't been able to find anything about boat charters between Warnemunde and Rostock. Does anyone have information regarding boat trips between the cities and can you point me to a web site?

Hi, the boats which sail between Warnemünde and Rostock are on the river, about 100m from the cruise terminal building, after the cross river ferry but before the turning into the railway station. The quay in the city is on the harbour immediately below University Square.

This is a privately operated tour boat, principally offering a 100min tour of the port and views of Rostock from the river but passengers can get on and off in Rostock. The boats operate from 10.30am and there is a timetable published daily on a board at the berths in both Warnemünde and Rostock. The fare is €12 for the tour or €8 one way. The boat trip is a nice way to finish off a visit to Rostock.

To make the most of limited time is is better to take the train/tram into Rostock (€1.70] and return on the boat, last departure usually around 3.30pm, before spending the evening in Warnemuende - a little gem not to be missed.

The web site for the boat is http://www.blaue-flotte.de/ but unfortunately it is only in German at the moment.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni.

  12. We will be coming to rostock this May on Celebrity Constellation and have friends from hamburg area that will be coming over to meet us. hat is the name of the actual port where the hips dock and where is a good, easy place to meet our friends? Any suggestions will be helpful!

Hi, As there will be 4 cruise ships in port on May 24th Celebrity Constellation WILL NOT berth at the Warnemuende Cruise Terminal as shown in the picture but in the Port of Rostock, berth LP41.

Are your friends travelling by car or train? Do they intend to meet you in Rostock or are you intending to travel to meet them?

The Port is reached easily by road, the A19 Berlin/Rostock runs directly into the heart of the port and there is plenty of parking around the berth.

Trains from Hamburg arrive at the Central Station which is connected to the port by s-bahn from Seehafen Nord.

Hope this helps but if you need more details please ask.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  13. Hi Anni: I was looking at the train schedule you just posted. We are traveling to Rostock and on to Schwerin. We dock at 7:30 and hopefully can catch the 8:10 train to connect with the 9:05 to Schwerin. The next train to Schwerin is 11:07 which is pretty late.

I gather we must buy the ticket to Rostock along with the rest of the group taking the train and further buy the Lander Ticket in Rostock prior to taking the train to Schwerin.

Any ideas on how to accomplish the schedule

    Thanks

    Dave

Hi Dave, the instructions in my previous post (your quote) refer to buying a Lander Ticket on-line whatever your destination or you could buy it on the platform in Rostock if you have allowed enough time; but you do have to buy your local ticket on the day, either from the machine or the ticket office, sorry! The train you mention is the best for a connection to the 9.07 to Schwerin but the next, 15 mins later, would get you there OK if you already have your ticket and you might even manage it with the one after that but it would be a very tight squeeze.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  14. We will definitely be ahead of the crowd if we have printed our tickets ahead of time.

This ticket would not allow one to go to Berlin would it?

    Hi Steve, this should work.

    Open http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Choose 'OFFERS' in the top bar.

Choose 'Regional Tickets within Germany' > 'Lander Tickets'

    > Book your ticket here

    Select 'single ride'

Fill in the departure station Rostock Hbf (Rostock Main Station)

Fill in your destination, if the drop menu gives several stations for that town choose Hbf.

Fill in date ticket is required, (time of departure does not matter as this ticket can be used at any time after 9am weekdays, 1am weekends.)

    Enter number of travellers

When selection of trains appears choose >purchase in Savings fares column.

Follow the prompts to buy and print out your ticket.

These tickets are always available (unlike some of the other specials) so there is no need to buy months ahead.

Please note that if you are travelling between Warnemuende and Rostock before 9am you will also need to purchase a local ticket from the machine on the station

To answer your question. You cannot go to Berlin on this ticket but if you buy a Brandenburg Lander ticket as well (in exactly the same way) the two together will take you to Berlin and also allow all day travel on the public transport in that city.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  15. Dear Anni,

I can't thank you enough; your information helps so much.

Our flight August 29 departs at 12:45 from TXL. If we leave Schwerin at 9:00, am I allowing enough time to make our flight?

Dear Sue, The 8.48 from Schwerin arriving Berlin Hbf at 10.33 should be OK. The journey from the station to Tegel takes about 25 mins by express bus (about the same with a taxi) and check-in deadline is 30min before the flight for Air Berlin at Tegel.

    Best regards, Anni

  16.

I have a few questions. On August 26, I want to travel from Berlin to Schwerin. Can I use a Lander ticket from Berlin? There are four of us traveling together. On August 29, I want to use the train back to Berlin.

While in Berlin, are the Lander tickets the most economical way to travel in the city?

In Schwerin, I have booked the Inter-City Hotel. I have found that I can book the Crown Plaza, Schwerin for $23.00 more a night. Do you recommend the change?

Thank you so much! I look forward to meeting you.

    Sue

    Hi Sue,

Travel between Berlin and Schwerin requires two Lander Tickets, Brandenburg/Berlin and Mecklenburg Vorpommern. The cost for four travelling together would be BB €28 and MvP €29, total cost €57 for each travel day. As 26th and 29th are weekdays the tickets would be valid after 9am on RE trains. The standard fare is €33.60 per person so the Lander tickets are a considerable saving. They can be bought on-line and from ticket machines or from the ticket office at an extra cost of €2 per ticket.

Travel within Berlin - this is the best and most economical option for multiple journeys.

Kleingruppenkarte: day ticket for up to 5 people for just €15.00 (Zone A/B ) or €15.50 (Zone A-C) covers transport on all s-bahn and u-bahn trains, trams, buses, ferries and DB regional trains.

Zone A: Berlin's inner city up to and including the urban rail ring

Zone B: outside the urban rail ring up to the city boundary

Zone C: Greater Berlin (area approx. 15 km around the State of Berlin),including the city of Potsdam and Orianenburg - the s-bahn station for Saschenhausen

Another alternative is the CityTour Card. Details of the prices and discounts can be found at www.citytourcard.com/english/

The Hop on Hop off buses charge around €25 per person and the only extra is the commentary. All the places they visit are accessible by public transport.

The Crowne Plaza is more up-market but still right alongside the railway line. It is also quite a way from the old town (where all the attractions are) and a long way from the main station but it is a matter of personal preference really.

Glad to hear your plans are coming along so well and look forward to meeting you.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni .

  17. Hi Anni, I was wondering how you would rate the train trip to Schwerin versus taken the bus to Bad Doberan and the Molli Train through the country side. We did the latter and really enjoyed the whole day. We met nice people on the bus, had an interresting train ride to Heiligendamm, strolled along the main shopping street in Kohlungsborn, had a nice lunch there, etc.

I described the details with pictures on the following web site: http://www.*****.com/Germany.html

However, I have now read some more about Schwerin and was curious what you would choose for a one day outing.

Hi, it is difficult to compare the two, just a matter of personal choice really.

The train ride to Schwerin is also through beautiful countryside and the principal attraction is the castle and the old town.

The Mollie ride also takes you through lovely countryside but the attraction is the train itself as Kuhlingsborn and Heiligendamm are very much like Warnemünde on a smaller scale.

Bad Doberan is an interesting town in itself with the Minster and the monastery ruins but the best part is to sit at a pavement cafe on the main street within touching distance (literally) of the Mollie as she steams down the middle of the street, bell ringing to warn traffic out of the way!

This is just a personal opinion, it would be interesting to hear what others think.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  18. Anni,

If we do the train, is it feasible to see both Schwerin and Wismar and have enough time to see both? Would you recommend it?

If we chose Lubeck, is it realistic to include anything else if traveling by train? How much time would we realistically have in Lubeck? Our ship docks at 0730 and departs at 2200.

If we rent a car, how much is really feasible without cramming too much into too short a time? I have read the thread from last year in which HeinBloed maps out a trip from Warnemuende to Lubeck and Schwerin, and that seems feasible by auto, not by train. Do you agree?

The Bad Doberan - Wismar routing by car also seems very doable and interesting, but would the Molli train be feasible or advisable to include from Bad Doberan if we are traveling by car? Or would it simply be too much to try to see?

The others in our group's plans just changed yesterday and I am scrambling to identify the best options here for the two of us.

    Thanks.

Hi Bob, if you rent a car almost any of the trips you suggest are very 'doable' The time problems arise with train connections but some are quite possible.

I would not suggest trying to do any other town with Schwerin except perhaps a look at Rostock on the way back.

Wismar is possible by train with Bad Doberan as they are on the same line but if you want to ride the Mollie then it would be better to stick to Simon's suggestion.

Lübeck is further away but it can be done within your time frame by taking the 8.37am from Warnemünde arriving Lübeck 10.54am and returning on the 5.04pm from Lübeck arriving Warnemünde 7.21pm. Unfortunately the next train would be too late for boarding time.

Hope this helps with your planning,

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  19. Anni

Do you have any information on when the Festival is scheduled for this year, and roughly when the vessels start arriving for the event. We are due to dock in Warnemunde in August.

    Thank you.

Hi, I have never heard of 'Festival of Freedom' but we do have 'Hanse Sail' which is a gathering of sailing ships large and small held in August every year. This year the official events happen between 11th and 14th August but there are ships in port for weeks both before and after those dates. 2011 marks the 21st anniversary so we expect more participents than usual.

Details, in English, of the events, participants etc. can be found at www. hansesail.com/index.php?id=1&L=1

    Happy cruising, :)

    Anni

  20. Hi Anni: I was looking at the trip to Schwerin. You didn't indicate which station to use. Mitte or hbf. It looks like we could get off at mitte and return from hbf to see the most in the town. I can't find the market on the map. i found the am dom church. Anything else we should look for

    Thanks

    Dave

Hi Dave, have found a better web-site for Schwerin.

    www.schwerin.com/english/

    Hope this is of help.:)

    Anni

  21. Hi Anni,

Thanks for all your help! If you are available August 27 ir 28, we would love to take you to lunch or dinner. We are also in our 70ties.

    Sincerely,

    Sue

Hi Sue, I'm so pleased that your planning is going well and thank you for your kind invitation.

These pages are getting a bit crowded, I nearly missed your post. I never expected so much interest but am really enjoying myself. It has given me a whole new pleasureable pastime through the winter.

I would love to meet you while you are in NE Germany. Maybe you would like to contact me by e-mail and we can arrange something in Schwerin or Rostock or anywhere else in the area you would like to visit. It would be my pleasure to show you around.

    Best regards, Anni

  22. Hi Anni: I was looking at the trip to Schwerin. You didn't indicate which station to use. Mitte or hbf. It looks like we could get off at mitte and return from hbf to see the most in the town. I can't find the market on the map. i found the am dom church. Anything else we should look for

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

You can use either station although I gave the timetable to Schwerin Hbf (main station) for a couple of reasons.

At the Hbf it is possible to check the times of return trains, always a good idea in case of changes.

The walk into town is much more pleasant and flatter.

If you use Mitte be aware that it is less than 2mins from Hbf and the train stops only briefly.

The market place is Am Markt, the square just south of Am Dom. The tourist information office is in the market place.

    Happy cruising, :)

    Anni

  23. We will be in Warnemunde on Sunday June 5. Is there a Lutheran Church there or in Rostock that would have services? I belonged to a German Evangelical church in Philadelphia and and somewhat familiar with the service. Is there a church with a "good" organ/organist (not necessarily protestant) near by?? Thanks!

HI, the Lutheran Church in Warnemünde is situated in the Market Place, about 10min walk from the cruise terminal. Sunday Morning Service at 10am

In the City of Rostock itself there are Sunday services at St.Marien, our biggest church, at 9.30am; St Petri, the oldest church, at 11am; University Church, originally part of the Cistercian Convent, every second Sunday at 7pm.

Most Lutheran churches have a short organ recital at mid-day during the week but I am not sure about Sundays. I am afraid that although I love organ music and often pop in to the Marien to listen I do not know very much about the instruments themselves. However, I understand that the Baroque organ in the Marien is an especially fine example; built in 1770 by Schmidt of Rostock and completely renovated by Sauer of Frankfurt in 1938 it was the only large church organ in Rostock to survive WWll.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  24. Sorry, Anni,

    for my mistake!

I couldn´t believe that there are several Australians stuck in Rostock.

You will find that handsome young guy on the beach of Warnemünde near the Lighthouse at summertime.

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Apology accepted but please believe me that I am not 'stuck' in Rostock.

I live here by choice for the simple reason that I love the area, the people and the lifestyle. :)

Mind you, I would not say no to a glimpse of a handsome, young, Australian surfer on our beach this summer! ;)

    Happy cruising

    Anni
