  1. Also how does one get to Rostock from Warnemunde?

Hi to all those intending to visit Rostock from Warnemünde.

I have spoken to several people lately and am appalled at the lack of information (and quite frankly, mis-information) given to passengers by some cruise lines, especially to those wishing to go ashore independently using public transport. I hope the following will help to make your visit a more pleasant and less stressful/expensive experience.

Local Transport Tickets are valid on all s-bahn trains, trams and buses within the area which includes Warnemünde, the City and the Port of Rostock. There are new ticket machines with instructions in English at all train, tram and bus stops and on-board the trams and buses.

    Standard Tickets.

If you intend only to visit Rostock City and return direct to Warnemünde then single tickets are all you require. A single ticket (€1.70), covers the journey between Warnemünde and the three stops (Neuer Markt, Lange Strasse and Kröpeliner Tor) in the City centre. The trains do not run right into the City Centre. The Central station is about 2kms away and the journey is completed by tram. At the Central station descend to the lower level, platform A and take a #5 or #6 tram. (You could also leave the train at Holbein Platz, trams #1 & #5 or Parkstrasse, tram #6 but Central is easier)

NB Even though you change from train to tram you only need the one ticket.

You cannot purchase a return ticket as such, you must buy two separate tickets. The machine has no way of issuing a return and if you ask for a return you will be sold a day ticket.

If you are using a single journey ticket please do not forget to validate it in the little orange box on the train platform in Warnemünde and when returning in the box on the tram. This is a lesson I learned at a cost of €40, the fine for being caught with an unvalidated ticket!

    Day tickets

Costing €4.50 these are available every day and cover all the s-bahn trains, buses, trams and ferries in the local transport area. Useful if, for instance, you wish to visit the Art Gallery, the Botanical Gardens, the Zoo or simply explore the suburbs.

Day tickets for 2 persons obviously cost €9 so the group ticket at €13.50 only kicks in with a party of three, four or five.

The day ticket can be used on the cross-river ferry next to the cruise terminal. Hohe Dune on the other bank is nice for an evening stroll and great for taking photos of your ship.

NB The day ticket is not valid for the boat journey between Warnemünde and Rostock. This is a privately operated pleasure cruiser and the fare is €8 one way.

Details of both local and regional transport can be found in English on the web site www.rsag-online.com

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

Even if you are not visiting Rostock please pass on this information to fellow cruisers who are, thankyou.

  2. Hi Anni!

Your post has been lovely to read, and very informative. Our ship (ms Rotterdam) will be in port on Monday, August 29th from 6:00 - 23:00. Is there anything to do at night? I'm 25, and hopefully I'll meet some other young people on the ship!

    Thank you!

    ~Christine

    Hi Christine,

Can't advise from personal experience (at 70+ I mostly sleep at night!) but will ask around my young colleagues. If you would care to e-mail me I will get one of them to contact you.

However, I do know that Warnemünde is popular with young people on summer evenings. There are lots of bars, restaurants etc.(most with outside areas) catering for all different age groups and tastes. Of course, if the weather is good, the beach is always a possibility.

Happy cruising, hope you find a great group on the ship :)

  3. I had a feeling if I read long enough, I'd find the answer to my question. My Lander ticket is in hand, so we're good to go. Thanks so very much for all the info!

    Hi everyone,

Your thanks are appreciated. I think just about every answer is in the thread somewhere by now but keep the questions coming, I am really enjoying helping out. Might be a bit slower now though as we are well into the season and with ships on 26 days out of 30 this month there is hardly time to turn around. Look forward to meeting some of you at the Kröpeliner Tor.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  4. Thank you Anni!

I think we will plan to go Schwerin Castle and then see Rostock and then Warnemunde.

Is there anywhere along that train ride we should also see? If we have 6 people in our group, I'm guessing we want the 5 person pass plus a single ride?

    Thank you in advance!

Hi Kristi, sounds like a good plan. There is nothing between Rostock and Schwerin except our beautiful Mecklenburg countryside, nothing which warrants a stop that is. My advice is to find seats upstairs on the left hand side of the train, the best lake views are on that side.

For 6 people the most economic way is two Lander tickets, does not matter how you divide them up (ie 1+4 and 1 or 1+2 and 1+2) it adds up to 52 euros. A normal single fare is 31.60 euro so two Lander saves you just over 10 euro.

Hope the weather is as good as it is here now, 28C and bright sunshine.

    Happy cruising, :)

    Anni

  5. Rostocker-

Your posts are wonderful and full of great info!! Just curious, is it possible and how long is the trip to get to Hamburg from Warnemunde? On Google maps it appears closer then Berlin.

    Thank you in advance :)

    Hi Kristi,

The trip between Rostock and Hamburg takes 2hours 25mins with the Regional Express, the service is two hourly. On REs you can use a Mecklenburg Lander ticket. With the InterCity Express the trip takes 1hour 50mins and again the service is 2 hourly but the cost for one person for a single journey is 41€ as against a Lander ticket at between 20€ and 32€ for the whole day depending on the number of people.

Hamburg is slightly closer than Berlin which is 2hours 40mins by RE and the cost is less as Berlin is not covered by the Mecklenburg Lander ticket.

    Happy planning :),

  6. Hello Anni:

Just wanted to confirm that the Rostock HBF is the first stop after boarding S-Bahn at Warnemunde.

Also, any cases of E. coli reported in Warnemunde, Rostock or Schwerin? Sounds like a very serious strain reported in northern Germany. Please stay safe!

    Thanks so much,

    Glenda

Hi Glenda, sorry to correct you but Rostock Hbf is the ninth stop after boarding the s-bahn in Warnemünde. The Hbf is the terminus for every train except one which carries on to Gustrow once every two hours.

Warnemünde - Warnemünde Werft - Lichtenhagen - Lütten Klein - Evershagen - Marienehe - Bramow - Holbein Platz - Parkstrasse - Rostock Hbf.

I have not heard of any cases of the E.coli in our area but you won't find anyone selling or serving cucumbers!

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  7. Hi Annie

Sorry to bother you once again, but I'm a little confused with the online ticket purchase. We're a party of six, so I've followed your instructions for purchasing the Lander ticket for five of us, but I also need to purchase a ticket for the sixth person in our party. When I put in one person (rather than five) it comes up with a price of 10 euros, which I know is incorrect, you said it should be 20. What am I doing wrong with this last ticket?

Thanks so much for your help.

    CheriKM

    Hi CheriKM,

I think that your problem is that the fare for one person between Rostock and the destination which you are entering into the request is cheaper than 20euros and DB is, naturally, giving you the lowest price for that particular journey. However, as you want a day ticket, not a single journey ticket, the solution is to enter a more distant destination (I would use Hamburg Hbf.) and the system will let you buy a Lander ticket.

Oh, the beauty of technology!! and silly me thought computers were meant to make life less confusing.

Believe me, the destination which you enter makes no difference at all. (quote from the ticket application - Valid Mon-Fri as from 09:00 h, as from 0:00 h on Sat, Sun and public holidays. Valid for unlimited number of journeys on day of validity, regardless of connection shown. No exchanges, no refunds )

I have given this a try and it does work. Good luck.

    Happy cruising, :)

    Anni

  8. Hi, We will be in Warnemunde on Sunday June 5, 2011 on the Constellation. How far is the dock from the town of Warnemunde?

Is there public transportation from the pier to Warnemunde?

If so do you know the cost?

Also how does one get to Rostock from Warnemunde?

    Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan, The Warnemunde Cruise Terminal is virtually in the town, there is only the railway station between, a 5-10 min walk depending which berth the ship is on.

The journey by train and tram into the city (Warnemunde is a suburb of Rostock) takes about 25mins and the cost is 1.70€. The tour boat takes about 45mins and the cost is 8€.

There is a lot of info re location and transport on www.rostock-port.de/en/cruise_shipping/warnemuende_cruise_center.html

A good site for what to see and do is www.rsag-online.com/

    Happy cruising, :)

    Anni

  9. Thanks so much for giving us all such helpful information.

Since this thread has become long, wonder if you could tell me how much the boat tour is that cruises along the coast. I did try to research this from the web site you gave but no luck.

    With thanks Liz

PS Am I correct in recalling that this boat ride takes about 60 to 90 mins?

    Hi Liz,

I am a bit confused as I do not recall mentioning the coastal boat tour, only the river tour between Warnemünde and Rostock. However, here is the info on both.

The river tour between Warnemünde and Rostock city centre takes about 90 mins (45 mins each way) and costs 12€ for the round trip, 8€ one way.

    www.blaue-flotte.de/

The MS Baltica does either a 2 hour cruise along the coast and back without landing or a 90min cruise to Kühlungsborn (terminus of the Molli steam train) which can be taken one-way.

The former departs Warnemünde daily (except Thursday) at 12 noon, cost 9€ and the latter daily (except Thursday and Sunday)at 2.30pm with a 2 hour stop in Kühlungsborn, cost 18€ or one way 10.50€.

    www.msbaltica.de/index.html

Both web sites are in German but have some nice pictures. The commentaries on both boats are in German only. Please note also that these schedules do not apply during the Hansesail Festival, 11/08 - 14/08

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  10. We will be in port on July 21st on the Emerald Princess. If we decide not to take a tour with the ship what do you suggest we see on our own. Our party consists of 60,70, and 80 year olds.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,

It is difficult to advise without knowing what your interests are but my suggestion would be to take the train/tram into Rostock in the morning, maybe take the tour boat back to Warnemunde in the afternoon and spend the rest of the time wandering around Warnemunde.

Both places are very easy to walk around, mostly flat with lots of pedestrian only areas. For the main sights in Rostock check out the web site www.rsag-online.com/ It has a whole page on what to do and see as well as everything you would ever want to know about how to get around the area, the different kinds of tickets and how to buy them. And best of all the whole site is in English as well as German. Just hit the little British flag at the top!

Warnemunde is very small (it is a suburb of Rostock) but has a good tourist office open until 6pm where you can get a street map. The main things to see are the fish market, the museum, the quaint back streets with the old fishermens cottages, the promenade along the wide sandy beach and the waterfront cafes and restaurants.

If you want to go further afield there are plenty of ideas in the older posts on this thread. If you have any other specific questions please ask.

    Happy cruising :)

  11. Hi Anni,

It looks like we bit off more than we can chew. My wife, Margi, prefers a more relaxed touring style and I love my wife so that's the style we will pursue. I think we will forgo Winmar and go directly from Warmnemunde to Bad Doberan and take the steam train to the coast and back to Bad Doberan. That will give us more time to tour Rostock and Warmnemunde on tail in. Should we get a day pass for the transportation except the steam train? Should we use the bus or the train to get to Bad Doberman and or back to Rostock? Can we take the boat back to Warmnemunde from Rostock with the day pass? We like boats too. Thank you so much.

Stephen & Margi from NC in the US

Hi, the local transport 4 Zone Tageskarte (Day Pass), cost 7.60€ per person, would cover all trains, trams and buses in the area which includes Warnemünde, Rostock and Bad Doberan except of course for the Molli which is a private railway. The boat between Rostock and Warnemünde is not part of the transport system either, it is a private tour boat.

May I recommend that you visit Rostock first, then take the train to Bad Doberan, ride the Molli and return to Warnemünde on the bus.

The trains to Bad Doberan leave Rostock Hbf at 6mins past every hour arriving at 25 mins past. The timetable of the Molli coincides with the arrival and departure of the trains and buses to and from Rostock and Warnemünde. There are buses to Warnemünde at 16.45 (arr. 17.20) and 17.33 (arr. 18.00) either of which will give you time for a stroll around before boarding the ship.

The reason I suggest Rostock first is that it is quite a walk to the bus in Warnemünde but is part of the stroll through the town on the way back.

    Happy cruising :)

  12. I am sure my answers are buried in these threads somewhere, but I just wanted to know if I'm on the right track.

We will be on the Constellation docking in Rostock on May24 at 9am. We'd like to visit Schwerin. If I am reading everything correctly we would need to buy the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ticket which I have been able to find to purchase online. With our "late" arrival, this means that we couldn't take the direct train until 11:07 arriving an hour or so later. It was suggested to take the 16:53 train back.

Is this the best way? Or should we visit Wismar instead?

Either way, is it better to take the ship's shuttle bus to the city and then the train or try to manage from the dock?

    Hi,

You are absolutely right about the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ticket and the first train you can catch from Rostock Hbf. I have no idea of the timing or city destination of the shuttle-bus so it is difficult to advise but if it arrives in the city any time before 10.15am then it would be worth taking and catching a tram to the station. Otherwise a taxi costs around 20 euros.

Assuming that you do not want to take a look around Rostock and that you have to be back on board around 22.30, it would be possible to catch the 19.53 train from Schwerin, change at Rostock Hbf and arrive at Rostock Seehafen Nord 21.57, this would allow over half an hour to walk back to the ship. There is also a train at 17.57. Tip: the 16.53 is a small, local train and often very crowded.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  13. Hi Anni,

Your giving quite a service. We're stopping in your area from the Eurodam in Warnemunde on May 25th and would like to go to Wismar and see the sites and come back and stop at Bad Doberan and see what's to see there and then take the steam train to the coast and back to Bad Doberan. Then we would like to come back to Rostock and see all the important things there and back to Warnemunde and our ship. What's the best way to do this? Thank you in advance for your opinions as to what to see and how to best do it with public transportion. We would also apreciate any advice as whatn not to miss. thanks Stephen & Margi from NC, USA

Hi, wow, you are setting yourselves quite a day there but it can be done!

Take the 8.37 from Warnemunde, change in Rostock to the 9.06 to Wismar arriving 10.15. The Market Place and city centre is a good 10-15min walk from the station.

Spend 4 hours in Wismar. I don't think you can see everything and have a coffee/bite to eat in less.

Take the 14.42 to Bad Doberan arriving at 15.29.

Take the 15.36 Molli to Kuhlungsborn and back arriving Bad Doberan at 17.18.

Take the 17.30 to Rostock arriving at 17.51.

The tram into the city takes approximately 10 mins.

Assuming you have to be on board by 22.00 the last possible train from Rostock to Warnemunde would be the 21.04.

This would give you just under three evening hours in Rostock.

This schedule does not allow for any time in either Bad Doberan or Kuhlungsborn.

I think I have covered what to see in Wismar elsewhere on this thread but I'm afraid that most of the museums etc in Rostock close at 6pm, however the shops are open until 8pm and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes.

Hope this helps with your planning

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  14. Whilst searching for the answer to a question I came across this great web site for the Rostock area. It is the site of Rostocker Strassenbahn AG, our local transport authority, but has a whole page on what to do and see as well as everything you would ever want to know about how to get around the area, the different kinds of tickets and how to buy them. And best of all the whole site is in English as well as German. Just hit the little British flag at the top!

  15. Hi Anni,

I have read all your good advice and now I need some more. My husband and I will be on the Emerald Princess docking in Warnemunde on June 27. I am in a wheelchair and my husband pushes me. How far is the distance from the dock to the center of Warnemunde? Is it possible to do in a wheelchair? or is it rough cobblestones, high curbs, etc?

Is the train to Rostock wheelchair accessible? The #5 or #6 tram to City Center? In one of your posts you said "walk up steps to right of Radison Hotel", any way around the steps? I guess my overriding question is what is possible to see and do in a wheelchair? Thanks for your help.

    Oops, sent it twice

    Betty

Hi Betty, the distance between the dock and the centre of Warnemunde is very short but there are a few problems for wheelchairs at present. The direct route goes through an underpass with stairs but there are a couple of ways around, takes longer but is do-able.

Instead of turning right at the terminal gates you turn left and proceed about 500yds to the level crossing. Turn right again along the Alter Strom (small stretch of water, not the main channel) and 500yds to the town. The second alternative - turn right out of the terminal, proceed along the quay past the turnoff to the station and past the motor-home park. There is a small gate in the fence, with a ramp, which takes you across the car park. Turn left out of the car park and you will arrive on the town side of the station. This route is usually open as long as there are only 2 ships in port but in any case it is a very pleasant walk with smooth surfaces.

Many of the streets in Warnemunde are cobbled but there are some smooth surfaces noteably the promenade along the seaward end of the Alter Strom, the mole and the seafront promenade. All kerbs have low access points where people cross.

It is possible to travel on the train to Rostock by visiting the DB service centre or asking one of the DB staff on the station. They will arrange for use of the ramp which all stations have. A member of staff handles the ramp and they phone ahead for the ramp to be available wherever you wish to you get off. If you are unsure of doing this yourself my advice would be to ask a member of the crew or someone in the tourist office in the terminal to arrange it for you.

In Rostock there are elevators to all levels of the station including the tram platforms and the trams themselves are wheelchair friendly, the floors and the platforms are level and close. There is no extra cost for any of these services, you just need a valid tickets for yourselves.

There are also cobbled streets in Rostock but the modern cobbles on the pedestrian streets are fairly smooth and there are smooth sidewalks.

There is also a ramp as well as steps to the right of the Radisson, straight ahead from the traffic lights. In fact I would recommend this stop (Kropeliner Tor) and use of the ramp as getting off at the Neuer Markt stop would involve crossing the market place which is very rough cobbles.

I hope this helps you with your planning, if you need any more details please contact me

    Happy cruising :)

  17. Hi Anni,

Leaving Wed. for Hannover then off to Mallorca for the first week of my holiday. Will try to pop in to the Historical Society to see if you are there when we eventually get to Rostock (sometime after the 25th).

Thanks for all the information you provide on this thread, got my list ready and will wait and see what the other two decide on doing. Should be a great trip!

Hi, your thanks is appreciciated. Would love to say Hello. Will be in the Kropeliner Tor 25/27/29 May and 4/5/6/7/8 June.

Have a great vacation, hope you enjoy Rerik, its one of my favourite places.

    Anni :)

  18. Hi, Anni, I have a question for you, it may sound silly, but I really don't know the answer. I am going from Warnemunde to Schwerin and I know that I have to change train at Rostock, but is the train from Rostock to Schwerin direct train or are there any stops in between? If there are stops in between, for how many stops after Rostock is Schwerin? Or will they make annoucement for the stops or is there any electronic boards to indicate the name of the next stations? Thanks!

Hi, its not a silly question! Much better to know than spend the whole trip worrying about missing your stop.

When travelling by RE, Schwerin is the 6th stop from Rostock. (Schwaan, Bützow, Blankenburg, Ventschow, Bad Kleinen, Schwerin Hbf) It is about 10mins from the previous stop, Bad Kleinen.

There are electronic boards at each end of every car, indicators above the doors and announcements.

Before every station there is a musical sound (pretty when you first hear it but gets a bit wearing after a few years!) then the recorded announcement "Wir erreichen jetz in .............." ie "We are approaching ..............., the driver then informs which side of the train the platform is on. This all happens in plenty of time and there will be others getting off so the stop is reasonably long in the Hbf.

If by any chance you have chosen to travel by IC the only stop between Rostock and Schwerin is Bützow and the announcements are in both German and English.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

PS. For the benefit of those travelling on other routes, the announcements on all REs follow the same format.

  19. Hi Anni,

Like many others rather than going into Berlin we are planning on touring Warnemunde, Rostock and Schwerin. Looking at the train schedules and fares I'm wondering if I'm reading the DB web site correctly. Is it true that a one way fare from Rostock to Schwerin for 1 person is 15.80 Eur, but I can purchase a Lander ticket for 26 Eur and that will cover up to 5 people for a whole day? Also is the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the Lander ticket I should purchase?

    Thank,

    Tom

Hi Tom, Yes you are right, 15.80 is the standard one way fare and a Mecklenburg Vorpommern Lander ticket is the one you want. The price has altered slightly but it is still a considerable saving on the standard fare.

    From my post of 28/12

The new prices are as follows:- 1st person €20 + €3 for each additional person up to maximum 5 people. ie ticket for 5 will cost €32.

This ticket is valid from 9am to 3am the following morning, Monday to Friday and 3am to 3am the following morning Saturday and Sunday.

It covers travel anywhere in Mecklenburg vor Pommern plus direct journeys from MvP to Hamburg or Lubeck (but not between Hamburg and Lubeck) and direct jouneys between MvP and Sczcezin in Poland. It is also valid on the city s-bahn systems in Rostock and Hamburg.

It can only be used on the Deutsche Bahn RE and RB trains (not valid on IC, EC or ICE ) and the privately operated OLA and Ostseebahn within MvP

The DB English website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en is a clear and easily navigated source for times, fares, special offers etc.

Tip:- If you are travelling from Warnemünde by s-bahn to catch a connecting train in Rostock it may be better to take the s-bahn one earlier than that suggested in the timetable as Rostock station, although not very big, can be a bit confusing to a stranger.

For instructions on how to buy a Lander ticket on line please see my post of 26/04.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni

  20. First, we're docking in Rostock - Berth LP41,

Hi, if you intend travelling on the s-bahn from Seehafen Nord to Rostock Hbf please note that due to track work the train will be replaced by a bus from Seehafen Nord to Hinrichsdorfer Str. where passengers will transfer to the train.

Departure will be 5mins earlier, ie.1min past the hour, arrival in Rostock is the same ie. 24 mins past.

Don't be fazed by this - the bus is a 'special', just for travellers on the s-bahn and the change over will be easy.

Sometimes the ships run a bus to the Hbf, it might pay to enquire.

    Happy cruising :)

    Anni.

  21. Anni,

Thank you so much. The train web site is a bit confusing. I done see how I can buy the Lander tickets in advance without choosing times and stops so we will just buy them in Rostock. Our ship is docking in Rostock and we dont leave until midnight. Is there something to do at night? Can we use the Lander tickets to get to Warmunde? Thanks in advance.

Hi, someone else who was finding it confusing managed after reading this. Hope you can too as it is much better to get the confusion over sitting at your computer than on the station with time ticking away and a long queue behind you!

    Open http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Choose 'OFFERS' in the top bar.

Choose 'Regional Tickets within Germany' > 'Lander Tickets'

    > Book your ticket here

    Select 'single ride'

Fill in the departure station Rostock Hbf (Rostock Main Station)

Fill in any destination in Mecklenburg (ie. Schwerin,Wismar etc) if the drop menu gives several stations for that town choose Hbf.

Fill in date ticket is required, time of departure 9am (this does not matter but it will not let you continue without a time!)

    Enter number of travellers.

Leave all other choices as is.

When selection of trains appears choose >purchase in Savings fares column.

Choose Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket. (Note that it says - 'Valid Mon-Fri as from 09:00 h, as from 0:00 h on Sat, Sun and public holidays. Valid for unlimited number of journeys on day of validity, regardless of connection shown'.)

Follow the prompts to buy and print out your ticket. Good luck.

You can certainly use your tickets to get to Warnemunde and it is a nice place to spend the evening. The best way to return to the ship is to take the s-bahn two stops from Warnemunde to Lutten Klein and the no. 45 bus from there (last bus 9.58pm).

Rostock is a pleasant place to stroll on a summer evening and all shops are open until 8pm. Cafes and restaurants until 10pm or even later. But be aware, the last train for Seehafen Nord departs 9.34pm.

    Happy cruising :)

  22. Anni,

We are trying to decide on our excursion for May 24. I like your plan to Wismar and stopping in Bad Doberan. If I buy the Lander train tickets can I use them any way I want or do I have to choose the stops and times now before I buy. I like the freedom to choose whichever return time we want. Also are the lander tickets for one way only or are they an all day pass? Do you have any recommendations on what to do in Wismar?

Thank you so much for your help

    Kathy

    Hi Kathy,

Lander tickets are an all day pass valid from 9am to 3am the following day. They can be used on all local (s-bahn) and regional (RE and RB) trains within Mecklenburg and also to Hamburg and Luebeck. You do not need to choose your trains in advance, just make sure the ones you use are designated RE, RB or S-bahn. This is clearly shown on timetables.

Wismar is a wonderful place for walking around just marvelling at the age of the buildings which have been beautifully restored. The Market Place is a good place to start and the staff in the tourist information office there are very helpful.

I would definitely recommend a visit to the Schabbelhaus, the oldest building in Wismar, which is open as a museum and shows what life was like in this type of house in the 14th century and Am Hafen (on the harbour) is a pretty area where there are some nice places to eat. Sorry I can't be more help with things to do but I have always been carried away by the architecture - wandering around and taking masses of photos.

Unfortunately the tourism web site is in German only (which is strange, it being a World Heritage Site) but the pictures give you an idea of what there is to see. www.wismar.de

    Happy cruising :)

  23. Hi Anni! I was wondering if the train schedule in the summer is different than the spring. For example, when I searched for a train from Warnemunde to Berlin in May, there was a 9am ICE train, but when I searched in August, there were no ICE trains after 8am. Is that because it's the summer schedule? I assume so, but I can't find anything that confirms it.

We're due to be in port at 8 am on August 4 on the Oceania Insignia.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, the ICE from Warnemunde to Berlin on August 4th departs at 6.59am. There has only ever been one ICE service from Warnemunde departing at 6.59 on weekdays and 9.01 on Saturday. The latter must be the one which you found when researching in May.

Sorry to disappoint you as I know this means that with your berthing time the ICE is impossible. The first RE departs Rostock at 9.07 so this would be a possibility depending on how fast you could get off the ship but the next is 11.07 which shortens the available time in Berlin somewhat.

I am a great believer in DIY sightseeing but in the case of Berlin would strongly recommend that you consider an organised tour. Apart from the time factor, you are a long way from the ship should anything go wrong (and it frequently does on the railway) and although the ships will wait for passengers on an organised tour which encounters problems they will not do the same if you are DIY!

    Happy cruising :)

  24. Hi, Anni.

We will be on the Eurodam when it spends Wednesday, May 25 in Warnemünde. Our group of four is planning to spend the day and evening sightseeing locally in the Rostock/ Warnemünde area. From earlier posts, I understand that we can take one of the frequent (several times an hour) S-bahn trains from the Warnemünde station (a short walk from our ship) to one of the central Rostock stations. We can return to Warnemünde the same way. All correct so far? Is a change of trains or trams required in either direction?

Do the ticket machines for the S-bahns accept American “swipe the magnetic strip” style credit cards, or do they require the “chip and PIN” type?

We are interested in the Rostock one-hour walking tour that you said is offered by the Historical Society. Is it offered throughout the day or only at a specific time? Where does it start, and which S-bahn station or tram stop is closest to that place?

In addition to the guided walking tour, what other two or three points of interest in Rostock would you say are “can’t miss?”

What is the location or address of the Historical Society at which you volunteer? I like to scope out the terrain ahead of time using Google maps or the like, but Google Maps aren’t always good locating by place name, especially in English!

    Thanks for your help!

    Jon

    Hi Jon,

Yes you are correct. Trains depart Warnemünde for Rostock Central Station (Hbf) every 10-15 mins depending on the time of day. From the lower level of the Hbf you take a number 5 or number 6 tram to the City. The ticket which you buy in Warnemünde for €1.70 covers both train and tram. Please do not forget to validate it in the orange box on the platform.

I am not sure if the machines accept your type of card but my advice would be to have some euros with you in any case as many of the smaller shops and most of the cafes ( as opposed to restaurants) do not accept credit cards of any kind. Coins are also required for rest-rooms. Correct change is not necessary for the ticket machines, they will give change for €5 and €10 notes. There are three stops in the city; Neuer Markt, Lange Strasse and Kröpeliner Tor.

The Historical Society is based in the Kröpeliner Tor, the tall brick tower located at the end of the Kröpeliner Strasse. The walking tours start from there at 10.30am and 2pm every day on which there are ships in port. Take the tram from Hbf as directed above and get off at Kröpeliner Tor, 5th stop from the Hbf. Walk up the steps to the right of the Radisson Hotel and the Tor is right in front of you.

We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful, interesting city.

    Happy cruising :)

  25. Hi Jan

btw. today the first cruise ship arrives in Warnemunde this season.

It's the Marco Polo by Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

Dear Anni: i hope you don't mind if i use your thread to post this information.

    Harald

    Hi Harald,

I don't mind a bit, threads are open to anyone with useful info and I certainly did not have that bit.

Today, in my capacity as a volunteer 'meet and greet' I talked to quite a lot of passengers from the Marco Polo. Including one couple who had owned a pub in the town where I was born as well as the lady being born in the town where I spent my teenage and early married life before emigrating to Australia. What a small world we live in!

    Regards, Anni :)
