  1. This is my opinion, We took a cruise from Seattle through the Inside Passage way. If you have never been to Alaska "ANY" itinerary will work the whole area is awesome. I would however only get a Balcony stateroom for an Alaskan cruise, it is a must for the view. As for which side it does not matter because if you cruise north through the Inside Passage and back through going south you will see both sides. What we plan to do for our next Alaskan cruise is get an AFT balcony stateroom so you can see both sides at the same time. :D

    Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner:D

  2. Scenery? What on earth is there to see on the two and half days between San Francisco and the first port in Juneau other than the dreary open waters of the North Pacific? I beg the OP to immediately disregard this itinerary for a first trip to Alaska. It would be criminal to not at least choose a sailing that starts or ends in Vancouver that actually sails the Inside Passage between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland--the Seattle departures may be labelled 'Inside Passage' but that is totally misleading.

    I was on a cruise that departed from Seattle (NCL) and we were in the Inside Passage going and coming back. The only thing is you may spent about 1/2 day to a day in open seas (between Seattle and the Inside Passage). However in your defense Fishywood I have seen were they go the open seas all the way north and then the Inside Passage back to Seattle(this was on NCL?). However our cruise was not like that.

  3. Please enlighten the newbie on a few things;

    - if we purchase beverage package, can we do it only for the sea days or do we have to purchase for all 7 days of the cruise?

    You may not pick and choose your days it all of them or none of them :(

    As for this thread great excel spreadsheet, I see it was done 2 years ago and it is still helping people thanks a bunch.

    The package will definitely benefit my DW for she drinks the $7+ fruity drinks/wine. However I am right on the bubble with beer prices and what I feel I would drink per/day. One thing I have notice this being 2 yrs old they have some craft beers on the ship now and they tend to be a little higher in price. So does anyone know what they charge for a signature Sea-witch craft beer?

  4. The decision to abort a port is based on a number of factors, including weather, tides, and conditions for the entire day, not just at disembarkation. Passengers have to be able to get back to the ship in relative comfort.

    Several years ago, I was on a Hawaiian cruise and when we anchored off Lahaina, it was a gorgeous, sunny, calm day. Mid-afternoon was a different story. A violent storm blew up at about 3pm as hundreds were getting back to the pier to tender to the ship. I got on a tender at about 3:15pm when it hit. We shoved off as people ran for cover and spent the next hour and a half in an enclosed tender that was motoring up a wave, teetering and then slamming down the other side. Most passengers and some of the crew were seasick. We had to persevere as the ship up-anchored, turned around and re-anchored, and the three tenders before us disembarked. For many, it was a very frightening if not terrifying experience. At the very least, extremely uncomfortable. Should the Captain have canceled to port? Those in the tenders would have said, "Yes!" but imagine the outcry if he had. After all, it was perfect weather when we arrived at the port.

    This is a perfect example Pam. So I have to agree with a post above the Captain has years of experience, and I feel he has the last say.

    On our first cruise we got stuck in Hurricane Dennis (I believe it was 2005). I know the ship was rock'n and I mean ROCK'N people were complaining about the way the Captain handled the storm. We were about 125 miles behind the hurricane and the seas were rough. One guy was being loud about his opinion saying "the captain should have his license revoked" and other things ( I can not repeat on here). However the ship made it back to Tampa FL in one piece. Furthermore so did we maybe a little seasick and had sea legs for a few weeks but we were safe thanks to the Captain. Oh and by the way this was just the last day of the cruise so the other 6 days were awesome.

  5. This is a good thread great to know we must keep an eye on our reservations, and that is the first thing my wife and I do is make sure we had MDR traditional 6pm 10 top table. Then we look ahead at the menus to see what is a bad night for us in the MDR (food selection wise). Then we book the steak house for that night. Then the bar...LoL:D

  6. When my wife and I was on the Oasis we sat a 10 top in the MDR W/one other couple and a family of 5 (1 empty seat). The family of 5 was Mom, Dad, Mother/in-law, and 2 boys like 9 and 12 yrs old. We had a blast at dinner to the point where they had to kick us out to get ready for the next dinner crowd. As long as the kid(s) are for the most part well behaved I do not mind, like the post above kids will be kids. Lastly like Grandma said I love to hear what kids say about the ship/day, kids say the funniest things.
