  1. It was a fun interactive experience, just like Benihana as mentioned by Bob. However, some of that will really depend on your tablemates.

I also agree with the comment about the food being very salty and is likely to vary from chef to chef but I've seen other numerous comments saying the same thing so it definitely has merit to it. Perhaps asking for less salt to the waiter prior to the chef coming out would help???

  2. Add me to the list of those that are impressed by your well written letter. I'm sure they appreciated that you weren't actually asking (demanding) for anything, which is why you received the credit.

Although they use a 3rd party vendor for their onboard shops, it seems to me that Royal should be very well aware and monitor the prices they are charging their customers. After all, this is all behind the Royal name so they should have an interest.

  3. I'm really confused. If I have MTD, I still need to make a reservation to what time I want to eat? Can't I just show up? Like I would at a land restaurant (and maybe have to wait a few minutes for a table to open up.)

This will be our first RCI cruise.

You do not need to make a reservation with MTD. Only if you want to. The first couple of times we made reservations for at least the first night and then just stopped by the desk on our way out to make a reservation for the next night. The last couple of trips however, we just winged it. yes, you will have a wait but it won't be bad. For night 1 expect the non reservation line to be quite long but in my experience it goes by quickly (at least on Allure it did).

  4. If you want more upscale, then more than likely you're going to sacrifice the kids program and things onboard that they would like more (i.e. H2O zone, waterslides, etc...). It's up to you to decide which is more important to you at the time.

Yes, Disney fully caters to kids and families but I'm not sure that I would consider it more upscale. They do a great job at what they do but I still wouldn't put it at the same level as the more upscale cruse lines such as Azamara or even Celebrity.

We prefer Royal for our family and our kids love the many options. We personally cruise for the flexibility it gives us and our love of the ocean not to feel like we are in a 5 star resort. But, that's not the same reason for may others and I totally get that.

I suggest you spend a bit of time checking out the Family board. When my kids were really young there was lots of great info on there.

  5. Loving your review...thank you for taking the time to do it! It took me a good hour or more yesterday (while at work, mind you) to get caught up.

BTW, I am from the Bay Area originally. After college I moved here to So. Cal and love it for the warmer weather. I was up in SF for the holidays and it's always good to be back home. That city will always have my heart!

  6. Thanks all. You've confirmed my thinking. We'll enjoy our JS!

Good choice! I wouldn't have made that gamble for $2500.

For future, I suggest looking into whether you can get 2 regular balcony rooms that are connected. We do that so that we have 2 bathrooms, extra space and additional privacy. Most of the time it's actually cheaper or just slightly more to go that route than putting 4 of us in 1 balcony.

  7. I would bring life vests for the girls if going on a catamaran, or even just in the water. Then you won't have to worry about trying to find one that fits right and you'll definitely have one for each of them.

Yes, I think you can bring the ones that the ship has available with you. However, the catamaran tour company will have child life vests available as it's a requirement/law.

  8. We have done catamaran snorkel tours with our young children and they loved it.

I would always suggest simple beach days and resort day passes as great options. Can't go wrong with those! We have also done island tours that include frequent stops and time at the beach.

If you haven't already done so, I would highly suggest you check out the Family Board for LOTS of great tips and info on cruising with kids.

Also check out the Ports of Call Boards for your specific ports. You will find lots of great excursion info on there too.

Have a great 1st cruise...I'm sure you all will be addicted like the rest of us!

  9. We have done MTD both ways...making reservations in advance and just winging it and showing up when we wanted.

Our last cruise we showed up on night 1 and the line was crazy long for those without reservations....however, it went really fast and we were sat within 10 minutes. We elected to not make any reservations for subsequent nights and showed up when we wanted and never had to wait more than 10 min or so. It worked well for us.

We have also done it where after our meal we go back up to the desk and ask them to put us down for a certain time for the following night and at the same table. Most of the time they were able to accommodate our requests. This was helpful because we felt like we more or less knew what our schedule would be like that next night and would be seated a little quicker.

I suggest you go with MTD...we love it!

  10. I think I would personally go with the Jan 2nd cruise on Allure. The NYE cruise would be a lot of fun but that is only 1 night (NYE specifically). The Freedom will be really crowded being a holiday week and there will be tons of children and family groups. I have 2 children of my own, so I'm not saying that's a bad thing but something you might want to consider if it's just the two of you. The sailing on Jan 2nd will still be pretty full but much less children if that an issue for you. The balcony is also a big thing for us!

  11. Please call C&A ASAP and tell them the situation with your TA which is the reason for you calling directly. Do not accept any of their offers as they are a slap in the face. Hold your ground ,and I am willing they will find something for you that is JS or above. They are hoping you don't make a fuss but enough people on here have made fusses and it works.

If for any reason they still can't help you with this sailing, ask for additional compensation. Tell them you had to take time off work or whatever that will make it seem like this is a huge inconvenience for you (which I'm sure it is).

    Good luck and report back!
