  1. Princess offers xfer from Vancouver to Seattle airport?

My itinerary with the touring first shows the train only from McKinley to Whittier. Otherwise it is all by bus (Fairbanks to Denali and Denali to McKinley).

Caribill - last night I finished reading the whole thread from your trip in 2012. You were very lucky to be able to get the Connoisseur tour for only $883 more per person above the cruise only price. I think at the moment for us it would be about $1800 more per person. I don't think we have had THAT much inflation since then! (I think for you the good price was because of when you booked they were having a sale to fill up the tour as it was only a few months before sailing). The difference between the Connoisseur and Explorer was $1000 more per person for a total of $2000.

Caribill's thread was awesome and provides great information.

On my Connoisseur tour next year, it includes approx. $1330 worth of extras. $550.00 of excursions included, private wine-pairing dinner on first night, dinner theater in Denali, about $100 pp per day in meals, and depending how you like to tip for luggage, room-cleaning, waiters/waitress, bus drivers etc...$80.

So, if you like expensive appetizer's, crab legs, and extravagant desserts, plus a guide to set up dinner reservations/land excursions/advice and will provide a printed daily wrap up of yesterdays adventures, plus take care of any snafu's...the Con. tour is well worth it.

The thing about Alaska is no matter what you do, it will never be wrong. I hope you don't mind me adding my two cents for others who may want to compare the difference.

    Have a great trip!

  2. Trying to remember...but I think they guarantee to get you on the ship. If the flight is delayed, you will miss a day or days on the ship, but they will get you there eventually. Third party insurance pays the difference if you choose to cough up the extra money to make it to the ship... prior to disembarkation, on another flight/airline, under 'certain' and 'verifiable' conditions.

I pray somebody will correct my CRS...

  3. Another question - Those who have taken these cruise tours have you found that the best pricing was when they were first released? Or it varies.

I booked early, and many, many sales came out after. What worked for us was the Sip and Sail sale. Free drink package and specialty dinner. Love the Conn. tours, no problems and best accommodations. The longer you wait to book, the better cabins are taken.

  4. I was thinking maybe we would do the Connoisseur also. I see some tours do the Kenai Peninsula, Copper River, etc. That is why it is all confusing to me because I don't know which places might be the better places. I think the Connoisseur does Mckinly, Denali and Fairbanks. One might do a night in Anchorage instead of two in Fairbanks. Again, not sure which is better. Mostly we would like to see wildlife (from afar:D) and Denali (although I have heard the mountain only makes an appearance 30% of the time).

This time around I'm going to Kenai and added the Kenai Fjord NP Cruise. Maybe this link will help?

  5. We are thinking of doing an Alaska cruise tour in 2018. Previously we did a rt from Seattle so no land portion. How do we choose? What have you picked and why? I do know I want two days at the Mt McKinley lodge so we can do the Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali. Other than that not sure.

    Thanks for any help!

The McKinley Lodge doesn't have much there, but the mountain is beautiful when it shows. I think you want to go to the Denali lodge to do the TWT.

This will be my second time doing the Connoisseur tour. I like it because most meals are paid for and all issues/added excursions/dinner reservations are taken care of by your guide. It's a no stress/non-thinking tour. I'm one who likes everything paid for before my trip.

  6. It appears they are ramping up the website for my May cruise on the Star. They've added the pre-pay feature, but as someone else said, I can't book it 'yet'.

The Chef's Table is #1 on my list, as my travel companion is a foodie and I know she will love it. I found myself wishing it was available for pre-booking and now it appears that will happen. ?

Although, this could be (I hope it isn't) a double-edge sword. My last cruise, on a different line, they took my money for a Chef's Table experience only to cancel while on board because there weren't enough participants.

That REALLY annoyed me. I got credit as OBC. It is my strong opinion that Princess honors my request (and money) for Specialty Dining, or, they are going to have one rough passenger on their hands. I hope they do it right.

  7. We did both last May with our adult children. The jet boat ending back up at the Lodge was far superior. The rafting, even though we had a picture perfect day, was pretty lame.

Was the rafting you went on called a 'River Float'? I was looking at that one but might reconsider.

  8. We disembarked from the Star Princess on 10th November having completed a cruise from LA to Hawaii.

We were a party of 6 with Anytime Dining preferred.

The 5th Deck restaurant (Capri) was chosen each evening at 6pm so that we could enjoy the evening entertainment afterwards.

We dined in the Crown Grill one evening and it was faultless and the food was exquisite.

For breakfast we dined in the 6th Deck restaurant (Portofino)at 8am.

We only experienced a delay in the evening dining once and were issued with a pager for 15mins until a table for 6 was available.

We didn't dine in the buffet as it is a bun fight sometimes and you share with passengers coming straight from the sunbathing area scantily clad.

For lunch we chose to have a light snack or fresh salad in the Continental Cafe on the 5th Deck Piazza (Atrium).

The mattresses have been replaced and honestly they are the best sleep I have experienced on a cruise ship.

Just curious...were you in a Suite?

  9. I booked my May 2017 excursions a couple of weeks ago which is more than 180 days out. It seems some are available early. I did notice that some would show sold out and then not be and then be. I would keep checking. If you have a TA, let them do the work but keep watching. I have literally seen it change within my lunch hour.

Mine are all booked now, and I still have more than 180 days to go.

Ditto for me also. Even when a tour became open to book, a certain time slot would be 'sold out' or 'unavailabe' and would later open up. Keep checking. I think I purchased mine over 200 days out. It makes me wonder, now that the excursions have to be paid for in advance, if they are allowing bookings earlier.

  10. Going on Alaska Cruisetour next July 2017. Starting in Fairbanks touring for 6 days then Cruise South to Vancouver. What are baggage requirements/restrictions and how are bags handled during the trip?

You are allowed one piece of “Join Me Tonight” baggage per person on the land portion of your cruisetour. Like others have suggested, this web page helps. http://www.princess.com/downloads/pdf/faq_answer_legal/CAB_Alaska.pdf

  11. Wow, quite a number going in! I think the 8 will work well. Thank you.

I did the earlier one last time and there was a mob for breakfast with long waits. You board a Princess bus that takes you to the park and then the TWT bus.

I wish I brought my own lunch and will do that this trip.

There was a great visitor's center there and I wished I had more time to explore it before the last bus left the park. Keep bus times in mind if you want to visit the center (can't remember the name of it right now).

p.s. Don't forget extra camera batteriers and memory cards!

  12. Packages on board cost the same as if you purchase them in advance.

The difference is that purchasing them in advance gives you more extra "free" minutes than purchasing them on board the first two days of the voyage. (After two days there are no extra minutes with a package purchase.)

If you do not have an adequate signal in your cabin, try propping your door to the hallway open a little with a trash can. That usually provides a much better signal.

Being Platinum, if I purchase in advance, will I still be able to get my 'free' minutes once on board?

  13. We have booked a cruise to Alaska for June 2017. I have been looking through excursions to get ideas for each port. I noticed a couple of days ago that they had opened the Tracy Arm Fjord small boat excursion for reservations, even though it is nearly 240 days out. I jumped on it. It shows up in my current reservations, but now all excursion reservations are closed again.

My question - has anyone booked a reservation on an excursion this early and been able to keep it? Or was this just an error?

I think it's a computer glitch. There was one excursion open for booking a couple of days ago for my Alaska cruise in May 2017, it is now unavailable.

My guess? They're inputting excursions for next season and accidentally left it open for booking. Can't wait until they're finished!

  14. We are contemplating the Yukon Rail and Bus excursion in mid-May via Chilkoot tours. Are we mostly going to be seeing snow this time of year? We don't want to do a 7.5 hour tour and all we see is a bunch of snow vs the beautiful landscape everyone talks about. Thanks!

I have booked the same Yukon Rail and Bus excursion next May. Although weather is unpredictable, I am quite confident that your/our tour will not be 100 percent snow, beginning to end.

  15. Day 1/Saturday...

    • check in to Bayshore
    • return to the cruise terminal to get the Grouse Mountain shuttle.
    • 4pm get on the Grouse return shuttle, but request to be dropped off at Capilano Suspension Bridge
    • 6pm catch one of the last return Capilano shuttles to the cruise terminal.
    • 7pm At the cruise terminal, go to the North end of the cruise terminal for Fly Over Canada

    Day 2/Sunday

    • Hop On shuttles with stops in Stanley Park, Aquarium and other neighborhoods.

Thank you, I have been battling for months in my head...the timeline. Your input is very much appreciated!

  16. I would also recommend the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain as the first tours you take. For our second day in Vancouver we did a bike tour with Cycle City bike tours. We started near Stanley park and saw the sea wall, went through park then hit Granville Island, China Town and Gastown and the Olympic village (probably not in that order). I realize a bike tour is not for everyone, but I felt like we hit all of the main landmarks in 4.5-5 hours.

If your time is limited, then walking Gastown and/or Chinatown is a good option.

Hi, I'm planning a post-cruise stay in Vancouver. We get off the ship on a Saturday with free transfer to Westin Bayshore, probably getting to the hotel about 10 a.m.

Could you help me figure out what to do first, second, third, etc.

    Listed by importance to us...

    Grouse Mountain

    Capilano Suspension Bridge

    Stanley Park

    Aquarium

Of lessor importance but would still like to see..

The Canada Place 'Fly Over Canada'

    Everything else! lol

We have available...Saturday 10 a.m. (?) until midnight, All of Sunday and Sunday night, and maybe 2-3 hours Monday morning before we catch our flight from Vancouver airport. I do like the idea of the HO-HO bus. We also have free transfer from our hotel to Vancouver airport, figuring we will be at the airport at noon on that Monday.

Any help from you or others would be greatly appreciated!

  17. Norris,

Thank you so much for your in depth review! I love how you and Carol partake in separate activities.

May I ask, since you note Carol Facebooking in your cabin, if internet is easily acquired while you/she were in your cabin...or must you stand in the hall? I just want to make sure I don't ever assume I can hand you an empty food tray from our cabin.

I enjoy sending family and friends emails of my travels on a day to day basis and was wondering if I might be able to do that from my Star cabin, booked one deck directly below yours.

Hanging on your every word, photo, and video. Thanks for all your information and the time you contribute in this fabulous review!
