  1. Good morning all. Women's equality reminds me of 30 years ago. I was a training officer on the fire department. I was called into the chief's office one day and he told me I needed to be more forceful with my orders to the crew. I needed to stop saying, "Please bring that hose over here" and bark the orders. After the next fire I was called in again and told to stop barking orders because the crew said "they get yelled at enough at home from their wives that they didn't need another female yelling at them." Oh well, sometimes there was no way to win but I considered it a win just being an officer and that I was breaking ground for all the women that came after me.
  2. Good afternoon all. Just got back from a week at Disney World, Epco, etc. with grandkids and son. That is a vacation that you need a vacation from after you return. Lots of roller coasters there but I found that the dark roller coasters do not agree with me as well as I age. After the first time I let the rest go without me while I waited in a shady spot for their return. Today is the first day the heat index isn't over 100.
  3. No, I think I have been living in a cave. Life got so busy that I am finding less time to do the things I like doing and just going with the flow. Kayaing has started two nights a week and I have been going out during the mornings about once a week. Family took a trip to Disney. Two teens and son and me. Soooooo tiring. My son said he walked almost 12 miles the first day. I will try to do better. thanks for noticing. That means a lot to me that someone noticed I was gone.
  4. Good morning all. It should prove to be an interesting day. A company is coming to build a large carport next door, which sounds good but they plan to put it one inch inside the property line on top of the 7 1/2 foot drainage easement that houses our neighborhood's covert from road to river. My sons told me that as long as the one inch is there it isn't my problem. They don't even plan to be home while it is being built. I guess we are all different. I plan and research everything so it is beyond my understanding of how they can do this. On a lighter note, I was informed yesterday that myself, son and two teenage grandkids will go to disney world this summer. I foresee a lot of planning in my future. At least the Mobile airport in town is having cheap flights to Orlando. It is the first flights going out of the remodeled airport. Should be fun but my old body will have a hard time keeping up with all the younger ones.
  5. Karen @luvteaching I am sorry for your loss. Your family will be in my prayers. I should have posted this when I first posted but I went to the end and was reading backwards to the first page in case I didn't make it through.
  6. This is a very unusual photo. It makes you wonder why all the people in the back are in firefighter outfits including air tanks. I hope it was just a drill. I just wanted to say that I am doing better. I forced myself to go out kayaking last night. While I wasn't up to my racing self I was able to do most of the route even in the heat advisory conditions. Today I tried weed eating and got one batter of work done before the heat got to me. Thank you for your concern.
  7. Good morning everyone. I have been under the weather or affected by old age for the last month. I feel better but not younger. Oh well, hope everyone enjoys their weekend.
  8. Checking in on my Dailyite family. It is 90 outside and very heavy with threats of hail, wind and possibly tornados. I seem to have picked up some reaction to the mold or spores floating around on the river. I have been taking a few days off to give my body a chance to recharge. When we were at the art walk Friday, I reached the end of my walking strength and we headed back to the car. It was very hot and I thought I had marked the location of my car on my mapping program. Apparently I didn't and an old pin sent us about a mile out of our way to not find the car. My son kept suggesting we phone the bike guy who drives you around in his three wheeled rig but I said it was useless since we didn't know where he should take us and we would end up going in circles. Much walking finally found the car but this old body had not planned on the heat and the extra two miles of walking beyond my limit. I was ready to cry. I will definitely make sure the car location is marked on my map next time. Oh well, they say getting old isn't for sissies and I agree.
  9. Good morning all. Life is busy here but I never seem to have time to do more then read the Daily. I went kayaking midweek as well as Monday. It was a daytime kayak and as the weather is now getting into the 90's the sun was brutal. Allegator spotting is happening more and more. While I was out kayaking I was asked how I like Mobile since I am approaching my one year anniversary here. I said I love it and they replied that there is always to many locals who claim there is nothing to do. My problem is choosing from all the choices, what to do that doesn't make this old lady wear out. I went to the Art Walk last night and it was hot and wonderful. The streets are packed and there was a parade and the vendors always have so much to show. Just know that while I may be slow to post, I am reading and grateful to all the information and family here. I just need to read faster so I have time to post more.
  10. Thanks Rich and everyone. Two nights now I have not gotten a lot of sleep. It seems for no logical reason raccoons have decided that my deck is the place to be. They seem to like 1:45 in the morning but start the party about ten. I sprinkled garlic powder on the railings and it seems to have shortened their party. Hopefully they will find another place to spend their evenings. One of my alerts on my camera had one of them swinging from the camera and all I see is the fur glowing in the night light. They aren't even afraid of me. I open the door and shine lights at them and make lots of noise and they just sit on the kayaks and clap. Life is never boring.
  11. Good morning all. It is a beautiful day here. It has been getting very warm but I still enjoy the random lightning storms. On my Monday night kayak trip we had a wonderful time but I returned bruised and battered from my disembarking. Apparently my kayak was on a rock and as I tried to get out the whole thing tipped over on top of me and I ended up sitting in the water up to my chest. I managed to get out and up but having the kayak come over my head twice was funny for those watching and as I wasn't hurt too bad I was able to laugh too. It's hard when you get old. Funny but hard.
  12. Good morning all. It seems that I read all the pages and then get called away before I post. I am here every day reading, but before I can comment I just get busy. Compared to most of you I don't get much done but I try. I have been kayaking, tried yoga but failed to be able to bend my old body to do it, and I'm writing my script to do a history tour of Mobile. I think I have the talk down, just need to find the right route for the tour to take. Have a great weekend everyone.
  13. Good morning. Thanks Sandi and all who provide the information for our poor old tired brains. The care list the food, drink and other information. Happy Birthday HAL. I called my PCC this morning and the cruise I wanted to add to my already booked cruise was not the $1.00 but was only $25 to book. Even my PCC was not sure why some are and others aren't. Last nights kayaking was wonderful but because the weather was so great our normal 5-8 kayaks was up to 17 and then another nine joined us from the other direction. Today I have been invited for dinner with a friend so that will be nice to look forward to. I plan to do some running around as I have quite a list of small items I need such as light bulbs and the squirter thing for the end of the hose (technical term). Hoping everyone has a great day.
  14. Good Sunday to everyone. Last night's storm was very violent. The winds blew sheets of rain sideways and everything was soaked. I had friends come over for a visit and dinner when their kite festival was canceled. We sat on the covered part of the back porch and watched the power of Mother Nature. Then it proceeded to wake me at 5am to a house rattling lightning and thunder storm. It was so loud that going back to sleep was not an option until after 6. I took my grandson out for a late brunch and we checked out a crafts fair. Now that I am home I feel like a nap would be awfully nice. Oh the joys of getting old.
  15. Hi, and thanks for this thread. I will be on the Volendam Oct. 2, 2023 for the Tales of the South Pacific. and September 1,2024 on the Westerdam for the Majestic Japan cruise.
  16. Good morning all. Thanks for all the posts today that keep us all informed. I have been following the weather and hope all make the ships and have a great trip. Yesterday was a busy day here. No laundry but front and back are mowed. Edges trimmed and weedeated. Roof blown off and repairs to eves over the front porch finished and it looks good. We were promised or threatened with bad weather today so the rush to do everything yesterday. This morning it is pretty sunny with 70 degrees. I may have to go out and trim the hedge if it doesn't start raining. Oh well, had a great time last night at the art walk with son and grandson.
  17. Good morning all, just dropping in to say hi and that you are all in my thoughts. Thanks everyone for posting and teaching us all things we don't know yet and taking us to ports we haven't visited yet. I do enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich, though I have never tried it with mayo.
  18. Happy birthday @StLouisCruisers, Sandi. Grahm your food porn is great as always, now I have to go make breakfast. It started with rain and lightning last night and hasn't let up yet. I hope everyone has a great weekend.
  19. Good morning all. Son's roof is on and just in time for the rainy season to start. It is supposed to rain today and 100 percent rain tomorrow. Not too many plans for this weekend. I plan to act my age and have a few days of relaxation. But I know if the rain holds off I will be out weed eating and working in the yard. No alligator today yet, I can't believe how much he's grown in the last five months. I will not be pointing out when he swims by as the neighbors are determined to shoot him. They seem to feel it is for the good of the neighborhood. I just enjoy watching him swim by a couple times a week. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and enjoy the holidays.
  20. Its 80 outside and very humid. AC is checked and leaves removed. I have a roofer who is expected to show up soon with an estimate for a roof on my son's house. I'm sure it will be almost as much as a cruise but we do need to keep a roof over our heads. My son was on his way over to do laundry and his car gave up the ghost. He limped it home and is bringing his clothes over on his motor cycle. When it rains it pours. A pelican sat on my dock and is still there. So pretty.
  21. Good afternoon. I start reading and the neighbor calls me out to check on something, read more, phone call, read more and I get busy with errands. I am determined to post before the next distraction. I received word that HAL will send me a check for my damaged suitcases. Good news. I can't seem to find excursions for my next cruise, PCC says they haven't finalized the contracts yet. Amazon delivered a smashed bottle of sweet chili sauce that I found I really like while on my last cruise, and she marked it undeliverable and will send it back. I could smell it but oh well, I should get another bottle soon. I went kayaking Saturday and Monday but still haven't seen a manatee. I hear that they should be in our neck of the woods now, getting frisky, so I am watching the river even as I write this. I have heard so many stories about them that I can't wait to have my first sighting. I'll try again Thursday night.
  22. Kayaking was fun yesterday. We went about six miles total but it was cut short due to strong winds. Then my oldest and I went to dinner downtown. Afterwards we watched a giant wedding and saw some musicians outside the church. We talked to them and learned about a tradition of second bands. Apparently after the wedding the whole party including the bride and groom come outside and parade around the park and several other blocks. The one gentleman explained that the music and dancing allowed the "common folks to join the celebration. It was something to watch. Guess I am not too old to still learn new things.
  23. Good morning all. And yes, thanks to all who have filled on for others who are cruising. If the weather does as predicted, and the sun comes out by 11 I plan to go kayaking with friends. It is a seven mile route so I am hoping that my arms didn't get too weak while cruising. We will see if I am the slowest one. It will be fun however it works. Hoping for a good day for everyone here.
  24. it was not just the wheels. When something grabbed the wheel, it tore out the side of the suitcase. And these were both purchased while I was on the cruise so brand new.
