  1. This along with many other things makes you wonder why they continue to hire duds as new-build managers etc.

Dunno... electronics like that would have been designed and installed by Fincantieri. I doubt that the cruise line ship designers are dealing with that kind of minutiae.

  2. Wow - that did fall apart! But it sounds much less confusion with just you and your son!

I have the addition of my ex for the trip. So now that makes an even six...

Yep... well, my son's partner just started a new job and was reticent to ask for the time off so soon. So he and his mom cancelled. And my ex-mom-in-law's company apparently just got a new contract with the government and the work is starting in August and she needs to be there. So without her going, my ex and daughter cancelled. My son still wants to go, so it turned into a father/son cruise. It is what it is... :)

  3. Hi, having had a look at Diamond Princess deck plans, I'm not sure how far MUTS noise will travel around the pools. I loathe MUTS during the day and do not understand at all why anyone would want to 'relax' around a pool with booming MUTS noise. Therefore I am looking for a quite poolside place on an upcoming cruise in hot weather in Japan (that is not somewhere I have to pay extra to escape the noise - like 'the sanctuary). Anyone got any experience please?

Try the Lotus Pool or the aft pools. The inside Calypso pool would also be away from MUTS.

  4. I very much doubt that. These ships are too big. Simply don't have a lot of places for them to dock. Ovation of the Seas itineraries were delayed because of issues with the NZ (Auckland port) which is not big enough to handle it unless it is berthed at Jellicoe Wharf which is a working port.

Maybe so, but we're talking years until these ships are launched. You never know... the wave of the future is larger ships. Ports will have to conform if they want to stay competitive.

  5. Two ships will sail under Carnival Cruise Line the other two will go to other not yet announced Carnival Corp. cruise lines.

The article says that AIDA is getting two. I'm sure one will be based in China. I would think that one will go to Carnival.

Wouldn't be surprised to see PO get one.

I'd bet that P&O Australia would be the other one. It'd be nice for them to get a new ship instead of Princess/HAL hand-me-downs... And that market is supposed to be growing too.

  6. The cost of any unlimited beverage package, no matter which kind, is based on multiplying the per-person cost times the number of days on the cruise. Since it's a sticker on the card of the person it's purchased for, there would be absolutely no way to manage a anything other than for the entire cruise. Even if you get it the morning after embarkation, you'll still pay for the entire cruise.

On my last cruise, I was talking to someone who bought it the second day and he said that he took his drink receipts from the first day to Passenger Services and they reversed those charges... so that's a possibility apparently.

Also, remember that it is of no use when you are in port

    'cept Princess Cays...

  7. Where did you see this "one day sale" posted?

On the Princess website? Or in an official email from Princess? Or on the 'large' TA's website?

It sounds like the large TA was offering perks out of its own pocket....allowing it to do the bait and switch thing.

When I have seen a price adjustment on a TA website, I call my TA...he calls Princess and asks about this lower price....and if it is officially a Princess price adjustment, he can always get it for me.

Edit: Just looked at Princess.com. There is no One Day Sale from Princess Cruises.

It's a large online agency... you have to book through them to get the perks... apparently the all-inclusive beverage package for free is one of them.

  8. We're going to be going out from Seattle and have signed up for a Princess Transfer from the airport to the Pier (and reverse at the end of the cruise). I've been reading threads here and found conflicting information.

Can anyone who's done this recently tell me if they make you sit on the bus and wait for it to fill up before leaving for the ship? (Our plane gets in around 10:30am day of embarkation) Or do they have a continuous shuttle service to the pier? Same question for the back end. Is it a simple process getting off the ship, boarding the bus and getting to the airport? Can we carry our luggage with us off the ship if we signed up for a transfer?

2nd question: Does anyone know if they offer dairy alternatives in the IC aboard the Crown? I love mochas but am lactose intolerant so would be thrilled if they offered almond/soy/coconut milk in their drinks.

Again, this is our very first time cruising with Princess and I just want to be fully prepared on what to expect. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Yes, they use motorcoaches, so you do have to wait until the bus you're on fills up. The one time we sailed out of Seattle, we only had to wait about 15 minutes each way. YMMV. It's a very simple process and yes, you can carry your luggage off if you wish.

  9. Thanks for the comments. Good advice.

Possible option -- arrive a day early -- Friday. Take a shuttle to downtown Long Beach. Would have to research possible downtown hotels for this options. Any suggestions? Clean, safe, reasonable cost, etc..

Then I need to research shuttles from LAX to Long Beach. Then next morning catch a cab to the Princess pier. Any suggestions on a shuttle?

    Again Thanks

Just so you know... you'll be sailing out of San Pedro, NOT Long Beach.

  10. Fantastic! I was reading a critical review about the old fashioned TVs and the poor location for 4 berth cabins. Is the TV now wall mounted at the bottom of the bed? That would solve the problem of the drop down bunk mechanism obscuring the view.

Do the TVs enable you to check your On Board Account and view photographs taken by the ships photographers?

You'll be able to use Princess@Sea on your personal device to check your onboard folio...
