Agree - FRA is difficult at best.  We are flying Air Canada to Lisbon in November and, unfortunately, they stop at Heathrow.  Crossing my fingers that they don't lose our luggage.

TC, would you mind sharing your hotel pre-cruise in Lisbon or thoughts  ? We have looked a LOT and can't seem to find anything that's good for a " one night stand ". Don't really want to spend $500/night and don't want a dump either. We are a ways out from our Lisbon to Cape Town trip in Nov. 2020 but want to get something going. Thank's, J&C

  2. Be aware that the Canal Du Midi is just that a canal. That being said we did a self driven "bare boat "cruise on this  canal in a 40' boat. There were 4 of us in 2 cabins, we went through a LOT of locks , some were operated by staff and the others by ourselves ( bring gloves ). We had a Wonderfull time . If you have any questions I will try to answer.

Capt John wish you cruised with Scenic you’d fit in really well! CA

Just wondering why you suggest Scenic. Actually we have looked at Scenic, just wondering why you are suggesting  Scenic for us ?

  4. Thank you Roland. I have another question; Is laundry service or laundry facilities available on board. We will be on the Ravel , Vienna R/T and also doing a Tauck Tour for 14 days after the river cruise so think we will need to figure something out. I did look at the web site but could not find any information.

Moved to the River Cruising forum where Crystal River posts belong.  If you want to ask this question about your upcoming Crystal Ocean cruise, please post it again there referring to that cruise.

My intent was to get a response from Crystal cruisers ocean or river. I am afraid my query will be lost in the general river cruise category.. So thanks for your help.

  6. OK I know this is all about ocean cruising but I have a question;  We will be going on a river cruise in Aug. and since I am an alcoholic I was wondering if a bottle of my favorite scotch would be provided in our room ? OK any scotch ! We have been cruising on Regent mostley and have been accustomed to this , just trying to plan ahead. We will also be taking our first Crystal Ocean cruise in January so looking forward to that also.

  7. Very interesting stuff. My wife and I just booked the Holiday cruise to the Antarctic, Dec. 15, 2021.Will be celebrating Christmas, B-Day (big one), and New Years. So will be watching future posts with great interest. I think this is the longest out that we have ever  booked a cruise, aprox .922 days and counting, lots of time to plan !

Oh, this will only be our second Seabourn cruise, for what it's worth.

  8. A side note and personal story.

We. made a trip to SF Bay Area to see family. We rented a car through Hotwire, they put us with NU car rental ( do not rent from them). Anyway returned car and went to the airport. Then the call came saying there was damage to the rear bumper. We had looked the car over before and after - no damage  !Long story but they turned us over to a collection agency! $ 600.00 , I wanted to dispute since we were not present for discovery.

We have Chase Sapphire Reserve, so with my tail between my legs I call Chase,

Bottom line all taken care of. Well  worth the cost plus all the points that you can actually use. I am a big fan!!

  9. Reading this post has been very informative and I thank all for that !

My wife and I just booked the Venture for Dec. 15, 2021.We are excited about this cruise but now even more now that we have read this. This will be our second Seabourn cruise. Our first was just a 7 day Med. cruise (Encore )  just to experience Seabourn since we were in Europe already . We liked it a lot. .Having sailed Regent for over 30 cruises this will be quite a change !! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks, John & Christina

  10. Think I got into the wrong business !!

Del Rio compensation doubled to $22m in 2018

Frank Del Rio's 2018 compensation would have totaled $14.9m if not for an accounting principle that put long-term awards from 2017 into his 2018 packageFrank Del Rio's 2018 compensation would have totaled $14.9m if not for an accounting principle that put long-term awards from 2017 into his 2018 package

Frank Del Rio, president and CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, received 2018 compensation valued at $22.6m, up from $10.5m the year before.

His compensation would have totaled $14.9m but for the accounting of the company's long-term incentive plan, which put Del Rio's 2017 performance share units into his 2018 compensation.

Del Rio's base salary rose to $1.75m from $1.5m, while stock awards soared to $15.2m from $3.7m the year before. He also received a cash incentive of $5.4m, up from $4.5m, and other compensation of $206,000, including a car allowance, medical plan premium, travel expense allowance and country club membership.

The second highest earning of NCLH's named executives was Wendy Beck, former EVP and CFO, with total compensation valued at $6.6m, up from $3.2 m in 2017.

$5.3m each for Montague, Stuart and Lindsay

Three executives each received total compensation of $5.3m. They are Robin Lindsay, EVP vessel operations for NCLH; Andy Stuart, president and CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line; and Jason Montague, president and CEO, Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Total 2017 compensation for each of the three executives was $3.2m.

In 2018, Lindsay, Stuart and Montague received salaries of $700,000, up from $650,000 the prior year. Each received a $1.75m cash bonus, up from the $975,000 in 2017, and higher stock awards.

My wife and I have been on over twenty cruises on various lines (mostly Oceania, Silversea, and HAL), and have always been able to choose a specific cabin at the time of booking. Last month, we put a $1000 deposit down to get on a wait list for a 24-night Lisbon-to-Cape Town cruise on the RSSC Voyager in November of 2020. Today we learned that our cabin category has become available, but our booking would have to be on a GTY-only basis. The invoice explicitly said that the specific cabin may not be assigned until the day of sailing.

We told our TA that GTY cabins are (for reasons not worth going into here) unacceptable to us, and we're requesting a refund of the $1000. My question is: is this what Regent does on every cruise? If it is, I'm not going to waste my time with them in the future. A bad cabin location can ruin a cruise.

Totally agree with Portolan, we did a waitlist just last year when all categories were booked. We cleared the waitlist but had to accept the cabin they assigned but we DID know the number.

We are also booked on the same cruise and looking forward to it especially after reading the blog from last years cruise on the Explorer.

Looks like we are neighbors ! We live in Oro Valley.

The battery powered water flosser looks interesting - I just ordered and will give it a try. Thanks, captjohn! And yes, the San Juans, Canadian Gulf Islands, and Desolation Sound are great cruising waters. We love it here.

Great I think you will like it . It is not adjustable but it is strong and will last over a week per charge . You may have to refill the tank twice to get the job done ! I tease my wife that we need to install a garbage disposal in our bathroom sink 🙂

Oh, put a very very small amount of silicon lubrication on the area where the tubing attaches to the main unit, there is an " O" ring that gets a little sticky. FYI

  13. We did the same basic cruise about 3 years ago on Silverseas. I knew it would be a " cold cruise" so booked a window cabin on deck 4 and we were glad we did. We called it the " bargain basement " !! Yes, we had heavy seas but don't let that stop you the itinerary was great and would love to do a repeat.

Has anyone tried the streaming apps for the $10 extra a day? Can the $10 extra bandwidth for streaming be bought on a day to day basis? Has anyone tried Google Duo over the internet? We are very interested in this as we are booked on WC with a long stretch of sea days.

Just so you know that the $10/day will NOT increase bandwidth . The $10 only grants you access to streaming on the same system .
