AN historic ship repair company has announced it will close its Brisbane shipyard next month.

Representatives from Forgacs Cairncross Dockyard in Brisbane broke the news to 25 permanent staff today at the shipyard.

The companies’ maritime arm specialises in ship repair and maintenance work from naval vessels and cruise liners to ferries and tug boats.

Member for Griffith Terri Butler tweeted the announcement was a “sad end for a significant site”.

While 25 workers have lost their jobs, 200 people hired for dockyard maintenance will be indirectly effected by the closure.

Staff have told The Courier-Mail they are bitterly disappointed to see the end of ship repairing in Brisbane.

A shame for all those concerned. Hope they are compensated adequately.:)
