Very Sad on Miracle

We just returned from the 2/3/08 sailing of the Miracle. My two sisters were just reboarding the ship, (I had reboarded about 30 minutes prior). They were really saddened to see a young woman being dragged onto the ship by Carnival employees while she was screaming, "I can't leave him here! I just can't leave him". All attempts at security were stopped and passengers were just waved onto the ship without xray or scanning as they wanted everyone away from this woman as soon as possible. The woman appeared to be around 30 years of age. My sister was told by a Carnival employee at the entrance that the woman's husband had drowned while on an excursion. The employees working the entrance had obviously been notified she was coming, as the staff escorting the hysterical woman hollered to ask them her room number as they were dragging her on and the staff member immediately hollered back her room number.

When my sisters returned to the room, they were so saddened and they shared with me what they had witnessed. We had a very somber remainder of the day. We wondered the rest of the cruise if the woman went back to her cabin with her husband's stuff left lying around where he had left it. This happened just about 40 minutes before our scheduled sailing time. We wondered if we would sail later, but we left port within 20 minutes of our scheduled time. We were so saddened thinking how long it would take before this woman would have the loving support of her family. We couldn't imagine planning a trip of a lifetime together and only one going home.

Staff on the ship said she was sailing with just her husband. This meant she now had no one to help her.

Do you think they would have let her back off in Costa Rica in the shape she was in? Or do you think she had to stay in her cabin for the next 2 days before we reached Belize? I can't imagine listening to the cruise director announce the fun activities while she was grieving so severely. I just can't get over the thought of what that poor woman is going through. It sure put a damper on our trip and made us miss our families severely. Anyone else on this sailing know what happened to this poor woman?

That sounds odd. My friend's FIL died on a Carnival cruise to Europe and they took her off the ship early and treated her great, but she did have Carnival Insurance. another poster posted about someone dying and how great the Carnival staff was.

It seems to me odd Carnival would be dragging a lady on leaving her husband's body behind. It doesnt fit anything else Iv heard about how Carnival handles similar situations. Maybe there is something to the story we dont know such as the lady told Carnival she wanted to reboard and then had second thoughts?? something???

That's just horrible and I can't even imagine being in her shoes. Why couldn't she have just stayed behind so that she could have collected her husband's body and fly back home? :(

But why was she forced back onto the ship? That does not make sense? I have heard in other instances where the individual is helped to pack up belongings and leave the ship to stay with injured (or deceased?). And even relatives being flown in to be with the 'grieving' party.

Why could she not stay with her husband if she chose to? ) and would they not need her there to make final arrangements? I dont' think there are any rules or laws against her staying behind and being forcibly restrained and made to board the ship sounds awfully cruel. I hope we are missing part of the story!

....maybe that is what happened.....per OP.....she got on with 40 minutes to sail......OP said they sailed 20 minutes late.......gave 60 minutes to get her packed and back to her husband.

I sure hope you are right. Otherwise, that story just doesn't seem right at all. Who would expect a person, who just lost their spouse, to sit on a cruise for 2 days, alone, grieving? That can't be how it went down.

It is possible she had to come back for passports and to pack.

How sad. I hope there is more to the story then we are being told. I have heard nothing but great things about Carnival handling deaths on their ships. I will reserver further comments until we hear more about this.

I am sure a plan is in place for any such tragedy that occurs to anyone while on a cruise. Everything I have read says the cruise lines handle these circumstances really well. With so many passengers and ships they have to deal with this weekly somewhere.

This website is updated fairly regularly and keeps track of the deaths of passengers as well as accidents while at sea. Hopefully if this is what happened, there will be an update on this site soon.

I have found the crew is not all that forth coming as to what is going on and giving details about “situations” that occur onboard.

The crew isn't forthcomming because of privacy issues. Only official spokepersons of the cruise line are authorized to speak on official matters. Unfortunately, the general public (i.e. fellow passengers) aren't considered to be in the "need to know" and are normally not informed of such occurrences.

This website is updated fairly regularly and keeps track of the deaths of passengers as well as accidents while at sea. Hopefully if this is what happened, there will be an update on this site soon.

It is my understanding that anyone not happy with the cruise can leave the ship and go home. So I can't imagine them MAKING her leave him behind. If the story is true about the death, the poor woman was probably out of her mind with grief, and was reacting accordingly. With no sense at all. Understandable of course.

I agree that hopefully they took the woman back on the ship to help her pack up and get their passports. That's the only thing that makes sense. We had to leave in the middle of a cruise due to the death of a family member back home, and Carnival couldn't have been more helpful. They made a terrible situation bearable.

There are all kinds of possibilities here. When on an Elation cruise, a man died snorkeling at the beach. His body was put back on teh ship and the family disembarked at the next port (Nassau). But there wouldn't have been any facilities for any of them at Half Moon Cay. Costa Rica...Maybe she was traveling without a passport, and the local authorities wouldn't let her stay...EM

Is snorkeling known to be dangerous? I was thinking of doing this on my cruise. Is the supervison for these things good. I would have thought if you booked a tour they would make sure you were safe?

Now I am scared to go on my cruise. I never really thought of it as being dangerous. I was wondering if the excursion was known to be dangerous.

Life is dangerous. I don't think any of us are getting out of it alive.

I hope you won't be scared to go on your cruise....it would be a shame to not live life while you're alive....
