Mitsugirly Port Review Links

Kim,

Like many other people here on Cruise Critic I have found your reviews to be very valuable. I like how you have taken the time to create links to all the separate port attractions in your signature. I point other people to them and use them myself when doing research. So, thank you for all your efforts.

However, there is one tiny problem with the links. Most of them point to a specific page number in the thread as opposed to the "Start" of that particular topic. A big part of this is due to the fact that the number of pages in a thread varies by platform and preferences. On a few of your very old links you point to a single post which is one way to handle it but it doesn't let you see the rest of the thread. All of this is a very long way of saying that I "fixed" that issue and am posting the links here:

Thanks for the wonderful comments, but I'm confused.

The reason that my earlier reviews pointed to the exact post it was located at is because I only did 1 post total for the entire review. Within a post, you are only allowed to post 6 pictures. So each review only had a total of 6 pictures and that's it.

My reviews these day contain hundreds of pictures, so obviously can't be put all in 1 post total like I use to do them.

I am confused about the links you have given in each post. They are just like mine and still drop you off on the same page where a particular review is located. You are still required to scroll down the page to find the beginning of the review, so I'm not seeing any difference?

Honestly, there's no way around being dropped off at the page of a review without having to scroll down to find the beginning and start from there. You just can't avoid it unless it's only 1 post total. If you dropped someone off at JUST the first post of that particular review, then let's be honest, there's a lot of people on here that can't even figure out "how do I find your signature line and then what do I do?" type of post. I get them all the time. I'm sure they wouldn't be able to figure out, once they are at the only post, how to continue to find the rest, then they will be back to scrolling down the page to find where you were at again.

The only way to correct this problem would be for me to 1) Do only 1 post total for each review with only 6 pictures or 2) do a blog or webpage with a link that would drop you off just at that page. Honestly, the first will not work for me and the second is just too time consuming for me at this point in my life. I find it hard enough to manage work, family, school and cruising. :o I did start one last summer, but didn't even make it through all the hotels before I had to quit because it was taking so much time. :)

So maybe I'm missing something here. If so, let me know. I'm just clicking on your links and still going to the page the review is on and having to scroll to find the review...which is what we do now.

Give it a a few seconds to load. :)

As you say: there are a lot of photos on your reviews! :)

The links I posted will take you to the 1st post in the thread about that topic and not just the top of a page.

Try some out again and give them a a couple of seconds to load. :)

For example: The first one for Horseshoe Bay may at first just appear to take you to the top of page 11, it in fact takes you down to post #434 (and not post #401) in a second or two.

Finally, the old links often do not take you to the page that the content is on. Believe me, it took a long time to create the direct links. :D

Just wanted to further clarify my post from yesterday afternoon since I was rushing to leave the house at that time. :)

One of the other reasons that pointing to a page number doesn't work is that the number of post per page is an option.

If you go into your User Profile and click Edit Options under the Settings & Options section you will see an option that states:

Number of Posts to Show Per Page

Use this option to set the number of posts to show in a thread before splitting the display into multiple pages.

Number of Posts to Show Per Page:

Mine is set to 40 but you can set it to 10,20,30,40, or 200 for example.

So using the example of your Horseshoe Bay link I mentioned earlier:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2221726&page=22

That personally takes me to post #841 when the actual post that Horseshoe Bay starts on is #434 which is on page 11 for me. (and may be on a different page for you)

Wow, you are simply amazing! You were right, the pages weren't loading for me and well...I was impatient. My apologies. :o

I know what you mean about it not dropping off at the right page depending on your settings. I came across this several years ago because I had mine set to a high amount of post per page and when I would like in my signature line, others would be like "I can find it on that page" or "I found it 10 pages ahead where you posted it" and so on. I found that a majority of people (especially newbies) don't ever bother changing their settings. So, I went with that and changed my settings back so that the links would add up to "almost" everyone's settings and they would be able to find it easier. AND NOW I CAN GO BACK TO MY SETTINGS....WOO HOO.

A few questions.... So the reviews that I have from way back yonder when I first doing a small 1 post wonder and possibly including my limit of 6 photos for the review.... well, I "think" ??? I just pretty much linked it to that post only (as in it would go just directly to that post number and no others within the thread) or...it was a post started in the ports board and since I started the thread, it would take you to post #1 and that's where you need to be. So, do I really need to change any of those? If so, can you explain to me why? (Just trying to get a better understanding).

Are you an IT guy? Maybe you could help me with another question I have about my pictures from the earlier reviews...well, the links.

I REALLY appreciate the work you did with this. I know it's going to take me awhile to get them all switched in my signature line. There's a lot there! Whew. You are fricken awesome and I could just squeeze you're cheeks to death! THANKS!!!!!! :D

Yup. That is exactly what happened to me when clicking on your links. I would be taken to page 22 but the content for that port was on page 10. So basically I created all the links above for 2 main reasons:

1. Selfish - So I could have them for myself as needed LOL

2. Altruistic - Help everyone else out too hehehe

A few questions.... So the reviews that I have from way back yonder when I first doing a small 1 post wonder and possibly including my limit of 6 photos for the review.... well, I "think" ??? Oops. I forgot to tell you how to actually do the links so that you can do them in the future. So here is the stated goal:

A. Have each link show the thread but immediately take you to the post with the pertinent content and NOT show only a single post

Here is how to accomplish that using the Horseshoe Bay link as the example:

1. Locate the post # in the thread that the content starts at. In the Horseshoe Bay case that is #434

2. Now click on #434 and it will open the page showing the single post and the URL will look like this:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showpost.php?p=46887005&postcount=434

3. Edit the URL as follows:

a. Remove the &postcount=434 from the end of the URL

b. change the showpost.php part of the URL to showthread.php

the URL will now look like this:

boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=46887005

That number is the unique ID of the post. However, changing the showpost to showthread make it show up inline in the thread as opposed to just the single post. This is the link you want to use.

Regarding the old ones that point to a single post, I fixed those up to in my links. If you just point people to a single post they might not read the rest of your review. ;)

Are you an IT guy? Maybe you could help me with another question I have about my pictures from the earlier reviews...well, the links.

Yeah, I'm a Network Engineer so I can probably figure it out. Fire away. :)

The longest part was finding which post everything started at. :)

I could fix up the signature for you pretty easy if you e-mail me your source signature that includes the BBCode commands (copy and and paste it from the edit signature window) and I can fix it up and send it back to you. You can e-mail it to serenadecruise@cdsnorth.com

This is a great resource. Thank you. I often go back to her reviews to get an answer too something I forgot, this made it easy to find that info.

Ok, I think I did them all, but not 100% sure. :p I added my recent review to the list as well. Hopefully they all work. :)

Thanks Night, I was able to figure it out and it's pretty simple. I always wondered if that could be done.

Ok so a "few" questions/problems and maybe you'll be able to help me out.

We'll start with the first. During my "very early" reviews, I would just type up a review, show the limited number of pictures within that post and then provide a link to the entire album of pictures. Well, after so many cruises, I decided I needed a little more organization and started making "folders" on my Smugmug with each cruise ship and then within the folder to different categories (like the port pictures listed in its own gallery). Well once I did that, of course, it changed my url link and made all my old review links invalid. While I know I can't change the post on here to the valid link, is there a way to made that old link actually go to the pictures? As in change the url the pictures are currently located at to the old url link? I'm pretty sure I deleted all those old folders, which would mean the old url went out the door with them too. Any thoughts? I hope that is making sense. :o

Take a look at the following ones again:

Cozumel: Chankanaab , Dolphin Swim , Chankanaab

Costa Maya: Maya Chan

Bahamas: Great Stirrup Cay , Nassau: Seahorse Sail

Those 6 still do links to a single post.

Otherwise they are all awesome now! :)

Yup. I didn't know off the top of my head and had to research it but definitely easy to do going forward.

I'm not an expert on this but there is a method for doing redirects via an .htaccess file. However, I am reasonably certain this has to be on the server (Cruise Critic) which puts you back in the same boat as not being able to edit the posts. :(

Unfortunately, the simplest way (although time consuming) might be to recreate the folder structures and copy a duplicate of the photo back to that location. It looks like SmugMug uses the folder name in the URL so you can figure out which folders to create with the "dead" links. For example, I see http://kimbakerphotography.smugmug.com/Vacation seems to point to nothing which tell me there is no "Vacation" folder or there is nothing in it.

So, how do I recreate these folders and drag copies into them? Well, I can figure out how to put copies into them once I recreate them. But how do I do that? The other problem is that I changed my name on the site, which is another reason I believe it stopped working as well. I changed it to KimBsphotography so even the beginning isn't the same. :( I can't exactly change the name back because then the other links would be invalid right?

Yeah, if you changed your name on the site then recreating the folders won't help because of what you already described. :(

Yea, it seems to be a lost cause at this point. I contacted the helpers at Smugmug and they said that once the name has changed, they will not longer link no matter what. I ask if I changed it back, would it work. They said it probably would, but then I would have all the other pictures within my review probably not working.

I guess that's a lesson learned.

The other thing I wondered about is....I'm running out of "space" in my signature line. I have redone it several times to try to shorten it as much as I can, then I started having to replace the paths with shortened url's using a url reducer, but I'm sometimes still hitting my max. Any other suggestions on a way to shorten things with the links or the way it looks or anything?

The URL shorteners you mentioned is one way. It depends if the BBCode is counting against the limit or not, but getting rid of the font size changes would save space if the BBCode counts. (and other formatting BBCode)

Since cruise critic doesn't let you edit your posts after 30 minutes if you put them all in a post and linked to that post then you wouldn't be able to update it so that is really not an option. You could link out to your own web page and hosts the links there. (which obviously link right back to cruise critic pages) That requires hosting and setup.

The short term solution is just to make every character justify its existence in the signature. :)

  • 1 year later...

Thanks for the comments and glad this link is useful.

I'm out of "space" on my signature line at this point and can't even add any more reviews of the ships or the ports.

Not sure what I'm going to do short of ...not doing reviews, not cruising. LOL
