versuco Posted August 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2016 Do they allow shorts for men in the dining rooms on non-formal nights? Doing Eastern Caribbean on Divina. Several in our group would prefer shorts over slacks if possible. Not asking for personal opinions, just facts. Thanks.
Homosassa Posted August 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2016 No shorts for dinner in the Main Dining Room. You will be asked to leave. An exception will be made on the first night, at least at the early seating, if one's luggage has not be delivered.

An exception will be made on the first night, at least at the early seating, if one's luggage has not be delivered. MSC enforces any of their dress codes that apply to any of the eating areas, including the buffet (of course, the buffet restrictions are different from that of the Main Dining Room). Homosassa Posted August 10, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 10, 2016 OK, I was only going on what I saw on my cruise. I was assigned early sitting in the Black Crab and I could see from my table where people (men and women) in shorts were turned away at the door and, on one occasion, the head waiter walked by and returned escorting a shorts wearing gentleman out of the dining room. OP - YMMV.
versuco Posted August 10, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Thanks for both responses. It looks like they are not very consistent with their policy. The guys will just take both and prepare for a quick change if necessary.
Rare LMaxwell Posted August 12, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 12, 2016 I had early seating in Villarosa and had shorts on one night. many men did on multiple nights. We were sat near an entrance; never saw anyone turned back.

Diver2014 Posted August 13, 2016 #11 Share Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) We were on the Divina last week and ate in the Black Crab dining room every night. At the table next to us - 2 teens and their father wore shorts every evening (their mother was dressed nicely each night but there was a big discussion one night with the waiters about something and she got up and stormed out of the dining room). There were men in shorts every evening although I saw one man denied entry who had on a tank top. Hit and miss but shorts are not appropriate for dinner. It's rude to your fellow passengers but then it seems nowadays everyone thinks of themselves first. A pair of khakis or even jeans is more appropriate than shorts. The food was so so, except for Thursday night. We had the best lobster we've ever had on a ship - hot, succulent and tender and our waiter gave us as many as we wanted. That was worth everything. All in all, it was an average cruise. I don't plan on going on MSC again. Edited August 13, 2016 by Diver2014

Homosassa Posted August 14, 2016 #13 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Very true about the tank tops, at least on men. The tank top ban is also enforced in the buffet.
TheSoccerCoach Posted August 14, 2016 #14 Share Posted August 14, 2016 A better question would be why would anyone choose to wear shorts or a tank top in the main dining room at any time, but especially dinner. It is bad form at any time. We can wear shorts when we dine at home anytime we like. Why not step it up a bit for a cruise? It is not that long and not really that great of a hardship. paceyswife Posted August 14, 2016 #15 Share Posted August 14, 2016 My husband will wear slacks every evening but it will be difficult to expect my 8 and 11 year old to wear them every night ... Not to mention I would have to pack at least three to four pairs for each if they were to stain etc... I think that they look neat and tidy with oxford shirt or golf shirt tucked into dress shorts. We have sailed DCL and NCL and never had problem, even with the specialty dining restaurants. They will be dressed appropriately for the formal nights (i.e. slacks) but the other nights in the MDR they will most likely be in nice shorts with shirt. There have been other posts that have said this is acceptable.

Rare LMaxwell Posted August 14, 2016 #17 Share Posted August 14, 2016 A. We can wear shorts when we dine at home anytime we like. Why not step it up a bit for a cruise? The same reason women wear sundresses.

I don't think wearing shorts to dinner is such a huge deal (will I do it, no... But will I shun someone, no).

As I said, your review, along with Maureen C and bermudabound really swayed our decision. We still have six months to go but very excited and yes, we got a fantastic deal with balcony and KSF. I have palpations when I think back now to what we paid for Disney cruise! Of course, the memories are priceless...

SnootieTootie Posted August 21, 2016 #23 Share Posted August 21, 2016 Just got off the Divina today. Our assigned dining was 6:00 in The Black Crab.' There were people wearing shorts every night including formal night and they were not turned away. A few grumbles from some elderly passengers about the rebels who dared to wear shorts, other than that, all good.
versuco Posted August 21, 2016 Author #24 Share Posted August 21, 2016 Thanks to all recent Divina cruisers who answered my question. We cruise 2 - 4 times a year but this is our first time on Divina/MSC and we are trying to learn all we can before we go. Looking forward to the experience. minnesotacruiserdc Posted August 21, 2016 #25 Share Posted August 21, 2016 Just off the Divina yesterday and jean shorts and tee-shirts allowed each formal night. Didn't seem to be any problem.
