Has anyone taken the excursion. I will be on the Carnival Dream in October. Do they let you roam around by yourself and if so, how long. My friend heard of a restaurant there that we might like to try. Thanks

We have gone to St Paul de Vence many times (on our own) both on port days and also when we stay in the south of France. During our visits we have often seen cruise ship tours going through the town (which is essentially one main street with a few off-shoots). Most of the time the guides will walk their group through the town (carrying their silly tour sign) pointing out things like , "this is an ice cream shop" etc etc. They than give their groups some free time (usually no more than an hour). If you want to eat at a restaurant, it is unlikely you would have the time as restaurants (and even cafes) are not fast-food places. Your alternative is to simply go the the town on your own via the local bus. That bus (#400) originates in Nice at the bus station (Gare Routiere), snakes through Nice, goes by the Cagnes sur Mer train station, and than turns inland to the town. They run these buses about once per hour (sometimes more often) and they stop right outside the entrance to St Paul de Vence (the same area where the tour buses drop their charges).
