When you get off the pier turn to your right and walk along the waterfront on a sidewalk. If you get off the boat early (8AM) you'll notice on your right, under the palm trees that the fishermen are selling their catch from last night, laying the fish out on the sand..they are usually finished by 8:30 or so. At the end of this sidewalk you will come to a walking bridge that goes over a small canal..cross the bridge and turn right for 20 feet and you'll see that there is a path that is built along the rocks that line the beach area. As you walk on this path, you'll notice that it stops in a few areas and you have to walk on the beach itself. After the 2nd small beach, you'll notice up ahead that the path is bending to the right and if you look at the "street" lights, you'll see that the path ends. At this bend you'll see a street on your left that ends up at the beach. Walk up this street and turn right at the corner and you will see the "Irma Hotel hill that you get to walk up....follow the street (on the sidewalk) keeping the water to your right as it wanders along. You will pass an Italian restaurant overlooking the water that will have a good spot for a photo of your ship. Continue for about another 7/8 minutes and you will come to a street on your right that goes straight down to the beach. This is the Casa Que Canta (hotel) hill. On the beach walk to your left (can't walk right,) and the 2nd restaurant you come to is Paty's, the first one is Elvira's and it's more money and not as nice .....OR if you want to walk a little farther on the sidewalk 10/12 minutes, slightly downhill you will come to a non-working water fountain called the Dolphins. Turn right and after about 2 short blocks you'll come to the beach, Paty's is on your left, tell her that Larry and Doris say hello.

You can tell me what to eat at Patys, because thats where we will be going in November. Although I do plan to eat all day so maybe I will try everything! We thought about doing your walking tour, but we dont get in until 9am and I want to get to La Ropa ASAP! Please give me all your suggestions Lardor! Thanks

My wife says "don't get preachy about food in Mexico"....so I won't...

Just about everyday for lunch at Paty's I eat a shrimp cocktail and a few fresh totopos (tortilla chips) and it's enough for me. ( tortilla chips do not come out of a bag, so they might be a little "greasy" because they just came out of the hot oil that they were fried in...) Try Paty's tortilla soup, if for nothing else for the presentation, make sure to tell the waiter you want it hot, sometimes if you don't ask, its lukewarm. Also get enchilada verde for a really good example of the difference of food down there and what we get back in the states...Her fish tacos are very good too. Ask for the fish to be grilled or else the tacos come deep fried. Anybody reading this and wants American type food, she makes good hamburgers and a good BLT. And yes, you can eat all your vegetables, they have been carefully cleaned!

Is there any shade at Paty's? Also, is the beach rocky there?

 

And, as for food, does Paty's have nachos with beef or chicken? That's a favorite of our DD.

 

Paty has plenty of shade with palapas and umbrellas...(go with the palapa, they are cooler)

The beach is all sand....

They have nachos but I don't know what kind as I don't eat them...however I'm sure they could make them with chicken if you ask...

GOT a quick question, about the safety of the Mexico water? Has anyone experienced the irritable bowel syndrom Mexico is supposed to produce if you eat the food or drink the water?

Usually it's too much sun and booze that gets you sick....

After 30 odd years of vacationing in Mexico neither I nor my wife have ever gotten sick. No one that runs a restaurant wants their customers to get sick. All the ice is now made with purified water, all the water you drink will have come from purified bottled water, all the veggies will have been properly washed.....If you want to be on the safe side because you have an "iffy" tummy, just eat some yogurt everyday for breakfast...

Ditto that. I drink bottled water, and I'm confident that ice has been made with purified water. The water in Zihuatanejo isn't safe for anyone, even locals, so anything that's sold for drinking or cooking will be safe. It can be challenging in a place where locals actually do drink the tap water to know what's purified and what's not, but that's not the case in Zihuatanejo.

 

The hard part for me comes when I'm on a land vacation and have to remember to not open my mouth in the shower, to brush my teeth with bottled water, and not drink from the bathroom tap. For a day trip from a ship, it's easy enough to keep tabs on myself.

We just returned a week ago from our cruise........and thought I'd pop in and say that we thoroughly enjoyed our day spent at Paty's on La Ropa. The beach was sandy, with only a few shells here and there. The water was so warm and fairly calm. It also appeared as though we might have been the only cruise ship passengers visiting that day. The other people there (that we spoke with) were on land vacations. A few (maybe 3 or 4 the entire time we were there) vendors came by, but a smile & a 'no gracias' was all it took for them to continue on their way.

 

The service at Paty's was excellent! There's a lot to choose from on the menu and the prices are reasonable. Everything we ordered arrived quickly and was either piping hot or ice cold (appropriately).

 

Had we wanted to rent a jet ski, paddle board, surfboard, banana boat, etc......we could have easily. All of those things were within a few steps from Paty's. I didn't check prices on anything, sorry.

 

Our server escorted us out when we were finished and hailed a taxi for us. There were some waiting just down the driveway area.

 

For those of you that recommended Paty's.......thank you! :)

Thanks for reporting back to us regarding Paty's. I'm going there in February for my first time and was anxious to hear an updated reported. A little disappointing about the number of shells on the beach but I'm sure I will be able to find a couple for my collection:).

lardor, the nachos more than passed the test. They were delicious! So was the salsa that they gave us for our chips. Hot & spicy!

 

Eddiesmom, we found some large shells out in the water. We actually stepped on them and then went down to get them because we could tell they were large. We didn't take them though, we dropped them back in........so you can find them in February! ;)

Wow,looks like we have the same thinking. First doing the tour with Rudy in Acapulco and like you, we will be going to Patys on La Ropa!! Happy to hear you had a good time. And after Patys we will be going to Tamales A La tole (sp). We will eat til we drop!:D

No, I don't remember tamales being on the menu....

Besides TAMALES ANY in town, you can get one at EL MANGO which is one street closer to the water than Tamales Any....It's across the street from "posole alley" that any local can direct you to....There are other places to get tamales but the only ones that I know of are only open at night..

This isn't a great photo.......and it might be a little difficult to read, but this is the menu from Paty's. This was taken on October 30, 2009......so keep that in mind if looking at it down the road. The menu, as well as the prices, could change. :)

Hi Wildrob! I think you'll enjoy Paty's. It's very relaxing! You have a nice view of the ship from there, too.

Yes, 1st time on the Spirit. Soooooo looking forward to it!

 

Relaxing is exactly what we have in mind at Patys, especially the day after Rudy takes us all over the country!!:D

Thanks for the menu. Will save my precious vacation time and decide now what I will want!!
