sarahc78 Posted March 15, 2010 #51 Share Posted March 15, 2010 Do you know how much this resturant charges for lobster? is it reasonable since they are right next door to the lobster co? Does the Lobster co sell cooked lobsters or only the local restaurants? WOWZA!!! I called up to inquire on the prices for lobster... in May they said the average price is $18-22 a lb  Its cheaper than that out here in our grocery stores or seafood markets!!! SailBadtheSinner Posted March 15, 2010 #52 Share Posted March 15, 2010 Jammerdc asked: ...Are the wineries worth visiting/touring?...... There are 3 wineries on Aquidneck Island. Here is a link that provdes a brief description of each: http://us-wine.suite101.com/article.cfm/wine_tastings_newport_rhode_island Here are the homepage for each: http://www.newportvineyards.com/ http://www.greenvale.com/ http://www.sakonnetwine.com/ Since I'm a beer drinker :D, I can't tell you if they are worth a tour, but if you've done winery tours elsewhere, it may be worthwhile. Enjoy your cruise and Newport. SBtS

Mabers Posted March 16, 2010 #54 Share Posted March 16, 2010 There's one in every crowd (I think!).....how about getting to a mall? Maybe Warwick Mall or North Dartmouth? Is either of these doable by bus? (I guess too far to walk!?) Or would a taxi be in order? Thanks, M.
SailBadtheSinner Posted March 16, 2010 #55 Share Posted March 16, 2010 You are right about being too far to walk; the Warwick Mall is about 25 miles from Newport and North Dartmouth Mall, about 27 miles. If I were driving, I would go to the Warwick Mall because once you clear Newport center, it would be 4 lane limited access most of the way; to North Dartmouth Mall, isn't. I've checked the RIPTA schedules, and I was unable to find a route between Newport and the Warwick Mall. Maybe there is a private bus company that serves either mall. For cab fare, figure about $65.00 each way to either mall for 2 passengers, plus $25.00/hour waiting time. Would you consider a car rental? This is just FYI, but there is a RIPTA bus that serves Newport-Providence, route #60, trip time about 1H 15M each way which will drop you off in downtown Providence which puts you about a 10 minute walk to the Providence Place Mall http://www.providenceplace.com/ . The frequency of the buses is about every 40 minutes. . What kind of shopper are you ? SBtS

Providence Place Mall sounds like our kind of mall......Macy's, JC Penney etc. Is there nothimg like that in Newport? Is that the closest one to the pier? M. SailBadtheSinner Posted March 16, 2010 #57 Share Posted March 16, 2010 TTBOMK, there are no malls in or near Newport like the Warwick Mall or Providence Place :(. You will just have to do your shopping at Bowen's Wharf http://www.bowenswharf.com/ , Bannister's Wharf http://www.bannisterswharf.net/ and along Thames St. which is filled with shops and restaurants. Thames St. is located due east from the tender dock; it is the second street that is parallel to the waterfront. You won't find the quantity or variety of stores here that you would find in Providence Place but at least they are located an easy walk from the tender dock. Shop till you drop :D !!!! Mabers Posted March 16, 2010 #58 Share Posted March 16, 2010 Again, thanks so much for the great info! I will certainly 'wharf shop' but usually need a 'mall store' fix when in the USA. At this point, that sounds 'iffy'. Just wondering though, if someone in our group wanted to visit Brown, wouldthey be close enough to each other to share transportation? M. SailBadtheSinner Posted March 16, 2010 #59 Share Posted March 16, 2010 Yes, I would consider Brown and Providence Place close enough that shared transportation would be an option. Since you mentioned Brown, there is another poster on this very thread who graduated from Brown (class of 83) and wanted to take her children to Brown for a visit. CrusinCaren Posted March 25, 2010 #60 Share Posted March 25, 2010 We have a 2 yr old, 3 yr old, and 5 yr old in our group. Any highlights for kids? Thanks :) Good Day all: I am offering my "expertise" on Rhode Island, particularly Newport. If you are planning a cruise to New England and plan on stopping in Newport, RI. Please leave a question here. I have lived in RI my entire life [36 years] :), and having spent a good amount of time in Newport and the vicinity I am offering my help to fellow CC members. I want to do this because of all of the help that I have received from other CC members. Currently I live in Bristol, RI a 15 minute drive to Newport. Bristol is known far and wide as the "Most Patriotic Town in the USA". So, please feel free to ask about tours, museums, shops and restaurants, watering holes, hangouts etc, etc. Hopefully I'll be able to pass the good deed along. Welcome to Rhode Island, The Ocean State!:D
macfin Posted March 26, 2010 #61 Share Posted March 26, 2010 i will get flamed for this by the people who say they live here but live a state away...but for kids, there a numerous beaches that are a bus or cab ride away...the best beach that you can get to pretty easy is easton's or first beach...nice area...they have a carousel and snack bar..waves are ok...there is an arcade that is very close to the pier, everything is kid friendly..right across from the pier are the shops at long wharf...there is combo candy store/toy store..keep walking down the long wharf area to thames st there is a great place called the Brick Alley pub, from there wlak south and there are other shops....take them on a harbor tour....there is decent park next to the baseball field...... Mabers Posted March 29, 2010 #63 Share Posted March 29, 2010 Is it possible (how far?) to walk to the Tennis Hall of Fame? Great info here.....thanks! Sheila.
SailBadtheSinner Posted March 29, 2010 #64 Share Posted March 29, 2010 Yes, you could walk it or take a bus which goes right by it. The distance is approx. .75 miles. A bus route # 67 goes right by it, both outbound & inbound. You would board the bus at the Newport Transportation Center which is located one block north from the tender dock. Mabers Posted March 30, 2010 #66 Share Posted March 30, 2010 (edited) OK.....just wondering now if it would be possible to combine Cliff Walk (north section ending at Breakers) with the Tennis Hall of Fame. Thanks, M. Edited March 30, 2010 by Mabers
SailBadtheSinner Posted March 30, 2010 #67 Share Posted March 30, 2010 Yes, this can be done. After finishing at the Tennis Hall of Fame, when exiting the building, take a right on to Bellevue Ave and walk to the stop light and take a right on to Memorial Blvd (Rt 138). Just stay on Memorial Blvd until you come to the north entrance to CW http://cliffwalk.com/ . It is about .7 mile. You could stay on CW until you pass behind the Breakers and then exit onto Ruggles Ave. Stay on Ruggles Ave until you intersect with Ochre Point Rd and then take a right. You will be in front of the Breakers where there is a bus stop. Look for a route # 67 inbound. Distance to tender dock is about 2.1 miles. The next exit after Ruggles Ave is Marine Ave. You can not enter a mansion from CW. SBtS

MacBraces Posted April 4, 2010 #69 Share Posted April 4, 2010 Ok, I know I'm supposed to be enjoying Newport for all the Mansions and Cliff Walks and such but, what if I happened to still have a little time left before my ship leaves and I need to do a little gaming. :D;) I've read about Newport Grand Slot casino. How far is it from the cruise ship docks? Transportation options? Thanks, Lori
SailBadtheSinner Posted April 4, 2010 #70 Share Posted April 4, 2010 A route #63 bus goes by it. The Newport Grand is located about 1.5 miles from the tender dock. A taxi would cost about $5 to $6 for 2 passengers. You should walk to the Newport Visitors Center located one block north from the tender dock for either the bus or taxi. On your visit to the Elms, did you do the Elms Rooftop and Behind-the-Scenes Tour? If not, that would be something to consider.
