advice 1 day cruise

My husband and I are taking the one day cruise on the Norwegian Gem, out of NY, in January. A first on Norwegian and a one day cruise. Can anyone tell us what a one day cruise is like and recommend what not to miss. Where is the best place to eat and which restuarants have an additional fee? With just one night will the casino and shows be way too crowded? I am looking forward to trying the Norwegian but am concerned with the short period of time we won't know the ship well enough and miss out on alot. Any help is appreciated. :)

I don't know the Gem so can't help you there. The only advise I can offer is - don't judge NCL based on this one nighter (either good or bad). I did a one nighter last month and it definately wasn't the same thing as a 7 day cruise. If you are just going to check out the Gem (ship not crew) that would be good overall view. I enjoyed our 1 nighter for the experience but doubt I will do it again.

DW did much the same thing only it was a two nighter on the Dream out of Boston. From all of the things we heard on board and the reviews I read after it sounded like NCL at it's worst. Our thoughts were "well, if that was NCL at it's worst we can't wait to see better!". We went on the Sky this past April and there was no comparision between the two. So just go with an open mind and enjoy, knowing that when you go on a longer cruise any rough spots are likely to be gone.

The 1 night cruises are a lot different than other cruises. The casino will be packed, and the table minimums are raised. I believe they will only have 1 show time, instead of the normal 2 showings. The crowd always seems much louder, and more in a party mood....rather than being abe to spread it out over a 7 -10 day cruise. Most people are up as late as they can stand, and are a bit grumpy in the morning.

Which 1 night cruise are you going on? We'll be on the 1/23 GEM cruise....and then staying on for the 1/24 10 day cruise to follow. For us we will be using the first night to settle into the cabin and unwind and get in vacation mode.

I agree with the general sentiment of the responses. We did a 1-night after a 7-day to Alaska. Everyone was out of their rooms trying to get the most for their money, so it was very crowded getting anywhere on the ship.

I've been on a few of these 1-nighters. This is a drinking/gambling cruise. Alot of groups that go there for bachelorette/bachelor parties, ladies night out kinda of crowds. Since it is in the middle of the winter, it will be packed inside. Plan to have dinner early or really late because the eateries will be packed. Also remember, service will be a little slow in the eateries. We usually go as late at 10pm because we can watch the show, then to dinner, then to the club. Works out for us because we don't plan to sleep until 3-4am. One of the bars has karaoke, it is always packed but fun place to be.

My advice is to rest up beforehand since you will need all of your energy to enjoy this short trip. We are not big drinkers or partiers but we really enjoyed the energy of a one night cruise. So much to see and so little time. It is hard not to have fun on a one night cruise. We wanted to do the Teppanyaki but it booked really quickly.

I had a feeling everything would be crowded. I didn't think of the casino minimums:eek:...good to know. We have been on longer cruises but we have to take a year off due to economy. I booked the 1/2 Gem cruise as a surprise birthday/Xmas present for hubby. I said to him "let's not exchange gifts this year and use the money to go to Foxwoods Casino". Thanks for the info. I know we'll have a good time!

I was on a 1-night cruise on the Pearl a couple week ago and had lots of fun. I would say get on the ship as early as possible. We were at the port at 11:00, but I am not sure what time you will be able to board. We have lunch first and then check out the ship. Have fun, I have been on a few other 1-night cruises and always have fun.
