We are preparing to go on the NCL baltic capitals cruise in July of 2010. In preparation we are watching movies about or set in the ports that we are visiting.

We will be in London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm.

A strange question but any suggestion for good movies?

There are lots and lots of great movies set in and around London. For the St. Peterburg area, I just saw on cable TV the 1971 movie "Nicholas and Alexandra". It is the tragic story of Nicholas II, the last Czar of Russia, set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution. It is an inside look into the private lives of Nicholas and his wife Alexandra, their daughters, and the painful secret which bound the Imperial Couple to the mystical Rasputin. It gives a flavor from some of the history as the Czar is pushed out (killed), their revolution happens and then the Reds/Lenin, etc. take over.

We always go to the library and check out travel DVD's pertaining to our ports of call. We also keep a close watch on the Travel and National Geographic Channels and Public TV listings.

 

In fact, it was shows on National Geographic about St Petersburg and one on PBS (Globetrekker) on Estonia, which inspired us to book this cruise.

We are big fans of the "Amazing Race" and they have just been in some of our Baltic ports we will be sailing to on our Aug. 2010 cruise....So far Copenhagen, Stockholm and last night they were in Tallinn...Beautiful....

Me, too! I love AR and was delighted to see Tallinn especially. 16 hours via ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn via ferry seems to be more time than our ship will be taking. Our itinerary says we depart Stockholm at 5pm and arrive Tallinn at 8:30 which equates to 13.5 hours by my weak math. If there is a time change, sailing time would be even less!

On the TIMEZONES compared with Eastern/Ohio/NYC time, it is:

London, +5 hours

Oslo, Copenhagen & Stockholm, +6 hours

Helsinki & Tallinn, +7 hours

St. Petersburg and Moscow, + 8 hours

 

So there is a one-hour difference between Stockholm versus Tallinn. In these Baltics, these different time zones are very pronounces as you move west to east.

Another option is to go to http://www.youtube.com and type in the city. You will get many videos on all these ports. Steve

On the Travel Channel, Samantha Brown hs been to all these cities and has done shows from them. If you check the listings, they repeat them all the time.

 

We are also big fans of the Amazing Race, and yesterdays's show from Tallin was great. We were, there, and we we there, and we saw that)
