Cruising from LA to Hawaii

Toto is correct - however, you might hit a Pacific storm, and it could be rough all the way!

Way back in 12-84, on the late, great SS Constitution, San Francisco/Los Angeles/Honolulu, we rolled and pitched all the way across. Table cloths were wetted down, table lips put up, all in a vain attempt to keep plates on the dining room tables.

Grand piano snapped its guy wires, came off the stage, rolled across the room, shattered the glass doors in the casino, knocked over slots, but missed the people.

Add to that a helicopter medical evacuation 24hrs out of Honolulu, and we had an adventurous trip.

There are no guarantees upon the water -you might have dead calm, perhaps mild rollers, or very heavy seas.

What type of weather can one expect during sea days in December? Is it cool or warm?

Based on my experience on that same cruise in October, the sea days going over were cold and very windy the first few days. It warmed up the closer to Hawaii we got. And like Toto said, it gets colder and more windy the further away you get on the way home.

It's not a traditional warm weather cruise with tons of pool time (at least our trip wasn't) because you are crossing the Pacific, but still a fantastic cruise. You will have a great time. Have fun!

We did this cruise on the Golden In Feb this year, weather was great in LA 73 Degrees. 2 hours at sea force 10 storm last all the way there. Great weather in Hawaii, but force 9 all the way back. Pools were emptied. Lots of people being sick. But still the best cruise we have been on. Great ports of call.

This is a great cruise. I love the sea days! I have enjoyed this cruise 4 times. I am a native of S. CA. Our October weather is usually HOT and we sometimes have the hot Santa Ana winds. The first couple days at sea are usually cold and windy anytime of year.

I have been on the cruise where the first couple days going as well as coming were a little rocky. But I have also been on this cruise when it was calm the whole cruise. You just never know. There is a change of ocean currant about a day out from CA.

Yep, our February cruise was rocking and rolling while at sea. But not so terrible that we could not carry on a wedding at sea on board the Golden. Our days around the Island were calm and sunny.

It is mother nature you never know.................................

go have a great time. Bon Voyage!:D

On our Hawaii cruise this past October, the first 2 days it was a bit rocky as the ship rolled a bit. It was not bad but my wife was uncomfortable. The third day and thereafter until we docked back in San Pedro, the water was smooth..

In December, it'll be quite cool in Los Angeles (particularly at night) and for the first couple of days as you go through the very cold currents. It can also be a bit rough during this time. Once you're at sea for a couple of days, it'll warm up and should be a lot smoother but, of course, there are never any guarantees. The same thing will hold true as you cruise back to San Pedro: the last couple of days can be a bit rough and chilly.

We did this cruise in late Dec. four years ago. There was record surf that day and we had rough seas the first couple of days (there is a current you'll cross so this is not unexpected). We had researched this cruise and had booked a midships cabin for my benefit. Hubby and girl (then 8) never get seasick. Also brought some ginger.

We also knew to bring our winter coats (well, winter for California) which came in handy that first night as it was chilly at sailaway. The pools did get closed the first or second sea day as there were crazy waves in the pool til then.

When we got closer to Hawaii, it was warmer and people were finally able to get into swimsuits. In Hawaii, it was in the high 70s the whole time. Mostly partly cloudy. No rain, not even in Hilo. We had to miss Kona because of high waves.

The rest of the cruise it was relatively smooth seas. A storm had passed and hit Southern California during our last day in Hawaii according to my mother. By the time we got to Ensenada, there was a warm spell in the 80s. Even that warm in Los Angeles. Still snow in the mountains that we can see on our way back to the Valley.

Yesterday we had a lot of rain here (it was about 40 degrees in the morning and got up to the low 50s at least where I live, but the coast by the port is much more milder than here) and there's supposed to be more on Thursday. If you go touring LA, be prepared for anything from temps in the 50s to the high 70s during the day. And rain.

Just to show you how things can change at a moments notice. This AM the news is reporting 50 foot waves in 'Honolulu' (and that is not a typing mistake) and they held an immediate surfing competition. This doesn't usually happen in Honolulu, but it is reported that is exactly what is going on right now.

We did the cruise the end of November beginning of December. It was chilly in LA and for the first couple of days after we left port. It was also a bit rocky once out to sea but smoothed out as we got closer to Hawaii. We were able to sit outside on the third day at sea. On the way back we had pretty smooth sailing and it was warm until we left Ensenada and got closer to LA. But you shouldn't need heavy coats or jackets. A sweater should be sufficient. It does get cool on the ship at times.

Wow, I'm so happy I asked! I was actually expecting pretty calm seas and warmer temps on each sea day... :o I better go pack accordingly.

Thanks for all your responses! :)

Are you on the Christmas cruise? If so you should come by and join our roll call. We have a very nice group of fellow cruisers.

We have done the Christmas cruise to Hawaii the last two years and it was cold and raining upon departing from LA, so you might want to keep an eye on the weather forecast for the weekend of our departure. Here is a link to our roll call in case you are interested.

It was in the 30s by 11pm last night and didn't get higher than 40 until about 9am this morning in my area. But there's not too many touristy places up here (the Reagan library to the west about 15 miles and Universal City & Warner Brothers down to the south east maybe 15 or so miles).
