Reading Delta's new rules it goes something like this...

If your suit case is over 62 inches (l+h+w) then you pay a penalty fee of $175 EACH way

If your suit case is 1 pound-20 pounds over you pay $175 each way..

If you check a second bag, it's $50

If you check a third bag it's $250

Fourth-fifth $350

6th and up $600 a bag and all that is EACH way

Carry on can be a purse or camera bag/laptop case/ and one jacket or bag that is less than 45 inches and can be stowed easily under seat....

but with all the news about more restrictions, how much of a stickler are the airlines being on these new rules? Packing will now have to become a science...luckily we check in our bags in a very small town airport but wondering on the return how strict Barcelona will be when we return..it may really limit what we purchase! :)

Thanks!!

Tara

The airlines are very serious about their size, weight, and number of bags restrictions and have been for some time now. The rules you quoted aren't new. Don't plan on your small town airport being any less strick than any other airport. Yes, packing is much more of an artform than it was a few years ago but not difficult as long as one doesn't feel they must take their entire wardrobe with them when traveling. Enjoy your trip!:)

You want to check the rules for international flights... they are different than for Domestic... and may be different for Europe than for South America.

As for how much is too much over... the airlines employees there will make the call, and any amount over is over and can be subject to fees.

In general they seem to be getting stricter with checked luggage.

Hi Tara,

As you can tell by previous posts, the airlines are not playing around with the posted regulations and fees. Don't think they won't care if you are a couple of pounds overweight, they will and charge you dearly for it (even in your small town airport).

One other thing, when flying back from BCN if you are taking a European airline they will normally allow even less weight (like 20Kg per bag which is 44 pounds). I had to end up purchasing a portable luggage scale that I take with me every trip. It only takes once to get hit with those extra fees to understand the airlines mean what they say:rolleyes:

All previous posters are correct. They are especially strict in Europe. If you purchase something heavy, you can always arrange with the store to ship it to your home. Most people pack far too many clothes/shoes. Lay out what you think you will need, and take half of it out.

If your bags weigh out about a pound over at check in, ask them to recalibrate their scale. Sometimes this makes helps.

AA let my DD17 bag through a few lbs overweight because it was she and her sister were minors traveling alone. She was very lucky.
