neurosurg Posted February 7, 2010 Author #126 Share Posted February 7, 2010 Well, the op is here, and am still enjoying my (unexpected) extension to my vacation. As my home airport is Baltimore, I'm still stuck in San Juan until tomorrow night, and then overnight in Atlanta (this time on delta) to get back on Tuesday morning. Before disembarkation, all of us downliners (people who did not board at the original port) got escorted off the ship first to get checked through customs to ensure we weren't sketchy passengers. Many of the original Philadelphia people were able to get routed through Charlotte and home, but for a few of us (me!) I found that the Saturday flights, and now Sunday flights home were cancelled. And Mondays flights are full, so rather than sitting in Atlanta, I'm sitting on the beach here in San Juan. Most of us did make it on day two, but six pax ended up watching serenade sail away again from Tortola and had to catch up in st. Maarten. Now, does anyone know if my trip insurance will cover my extra costs "trying" to get home?
Ocean Boy Posted February 7, 2010 #127 Share Posted February 7, 2010 Good to hear from you. We didn't get the snow up hear in RI but it is very cold. Enjoy your time on the beach in San Juan. It is much better than being in Baltimore right now! Plenty of folks here on CC were thinking about you guys.
marci22 Posted February 7, 2010 #128 Share Posted February 7, 2010 Now, does anyone know if my trip insurance will cover my extra costs "trying" to get home? I would think so, as your flights were cancelled. There might be a maximum amount for travel delay which will be listed in your policy. Just keep all your receipts. (for ex. mine is $150 pp/per day up to a maximum of $1000 I have CSA) Glad you made it anyway~
Ocean Boy Posted February 7, 2010 #129 Share Posted February 7, 2010 They were just having a recap of the storm on the news and Baltimore is listed as 26.8 inches of snow. I thought that might make your day on the beach in San Juan all that much more enjoyable.

Rare broberts Posted February 7, 2010 #131 Share Posted February 7, 2010 neurosurg, welcome back . . . to the thread.:) Nice that you are going to have some time on San Juan. It can be very enjoyable. You should call your insurance company. They may or may not provide coverage. But if they do, they'll want to assure themselves that you legitimately cannot continue / have continued your voyage.
pjlee3333 Posted February 7, 2010 #132 Share Posted February 7, 2010 While the airport did have 26 inches, many of the surrounding areas had up to 38.3 inches for Elkdridge (just about 10 minutes from the airport). In this case, the airport definately was the low point in the area for snow. Enjoy your extra time. Unless you enjoy shoveling snow, definately better than here. PattyG12 Posted February 7, 2010 #133 Share Posted February 7, 2010 And I hope you get back soon. We're expecting another "significant snow event" on tuesday night in the Baltimore/Washington area. I'm so glad you're hanging on the beach in San Juan and that you enjoyed your trip!!

Most important thing is to keep all of your receipts from your pre-cruise and post cruise adventures.
Ocean Boy Posted February 8, 2010 #137 Share Posted February 8, 2010 By the way, if you don't get home by Tuesday afternoon you might as well hang out on the beach until at least Thursday. The east is getting slammed with another storm between Tuesday night and Thursday morning.
neurosurg Posted February 9, 2010 Author #138 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Finally! Back at home, after narrowly avoiding more obstacles on my amazing race. When I had called Delta to reschedule, I was given the option of flying into Atlanta Monday and staying overnight to fly to Baltimore Tuesday early afternoon, or leaving San Juan Tuesday in the morning and arriving in Baltimore Tuesday evening. Of course, while I do enjoy my extended vacation time, my employer does not, so I elected to leave for Atlanta Monday afternoon to avoid the snowstorm coming this afternoon to BWI. We arrived at the San Juan and saw a couple from PHL on the US Air flight next to us, who also had been "stuck" in San Juan. We laughed at our unfortunate circumstances and our extra tans. After landing in Atlanta, and noticing that the Winter storm warning was now threatening our return, we luckily snuck onto the last flight leaving ATL for BWI. Of course, this flight was disrupted by a passenger not understanding "turn off all electronic devices" and then "hit" another passenger who was trying to turn it off for him. The pilot then had to turn the plane around back to the gate where the police were waiting for us. More loud passenger grumbling ensued, and then our pilot admonished everyone on the plane to be quiet and very nice to each other...else we would be sitting in ATL for a long time. After a quick attitude change, and a 45 minute delay, a very apologetic passenger came walking back down the aisle asking for forgiveness, and we got back to BWI. Then only to find out that there was three feet of snow surrounding our car in the outdoor (oops!) parking area. After about two hours of shoveling (the shovel ended up in two pieces), scraping, and rocking the car back and forth...we got the car out, and got home by 3AM. Now, as I am looking out the window and seeing the snow start to fall again, I'm already thinking about my next cruise adventure. :) Review will be upcoming, and thanks to everyone here for their help! PAcruiser116 Posted February 9, 2010 #141 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Neurosurg, you deserve a vacation from your vacation! Quite a story to tell! Hopefully you had a wonderful time! What made this thread enjoyable (should I say that with the ordeal you had? lol...maybe I should say interesting...) is the positive attitude you seemed to have through all of it! More people should take a page from your book and remember to keep a smile and a sense of humor through everything!

melbur Posted February 9, 2010 #145 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Neurosurg, you were on our roll call, no wonder you didn't make the M&M!!! The staff captain had mentioned there were 40 "down-liners" that didn't make the sailing, so sorry that it happened to you. Glad you were able to enjoy the balance of the cruise and have an extended vacation in San Juan. Melanie
