Cuise lines

Interrogation Room

Recommended Posts

It's not April 1st, so you must be serious :). Well, they all have ships.

If you are interested in the differences, I guess you could read a few posts on each cruiseline's forum, or go to the cruiseline's webpages. Or, see a TA and get some brochures.

There are a lot of differences including price between the different cruise lines.

Carnival Corp owns several major cruise line including Carnival, Princess, HAL, Cunard and Costa. Royal Caribbean owns Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara. MSC is a major player in the European market and is starting to do more and more cruises in the Caribbean. NCL is independent and as far as I know doesn't own any other cruise lines.

The luxury cruise lines include Seaborn, Regent Seven Seas, Crystal and Sea Dream Yachts.

All cruise lines include the basics such as 3 or more meals a day, a clean and comfortable place to sleep that the cabin steward keeps clean for you and some free entertainment including shows, casinos, pools, gyms, etc.

Different cruise lines attract different types of passengers. These are generalizations but here are some ideas. HAL is more refined IMHO and attracts an older clientel. Carnival advertises as the "FUN ships" and gets younger crowds who seem to enjoy drinking and partying. Celebrity is known for their upscape atmosphere and good food. RCL has a variety of sizes of ships from the biggest which offer everything from bowling alleys and ice skating rings. Princess has good food, good atmosphere and a variety of sizes of ships from small (700 passengers) to big 3000+. Cunard offers the classic ocean experience for a price.

We have cruised on HAL, Princess, RCL, Celebrity, Costa, Disney and Carnival. The only line we didn't like was Carnival (bad food, bad service, didn't like the way the other passengers acted, ship was dirty in public areas (our cabin was OK), etc.).

I would agree with the above posters to check out the specific boards for the cruise lines you are interested in and see which ones you might enjoy. I would also suggest trying multiple lines because it is fun and because you get a chance to make your own judgements on what lines you want to go on in the future.

have a great next cruise.

Are all the cruise lines the same?

Certainly not in the eyes of the passengers. EVERY ship, regardless of ownership, will have passengers who are very pleased and complimentary and passengers who bitch about everything on the ship. Pick any ship with any cruise line and read the reviews-you'll hardly believe these two opposite view individuals were even on the same ship!

Of course not all cruise lines are the same, just like not all automobiles are the same. You have budget lines, middle of the road lines and high end cruise lines. You have lines that appeal to families, to solos and to senior citizens. Then you have lines that are known for their great food and service, some for their activities and still others that are known for their great itineraries. You have lines that have behemoth ships and lines that have only very small ships. Whatever you desire in a cruise line, there's probably one out there for you.

They're more similar than dissimilar, I think. As some posters have stated above, there's certain characteristics that make each line unique. No one will confuse NCL with Cunard, or Celebrity with Carnival. Will you still get good service on each? Probably. Will you still enjoy yourself? Most likely.

The biggest difference I've found between lines are the ships themselves.
