cruisesusie Posted March 20, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 20, 2010 From what I've been reading, Copenhagen is a city we can do on our own. Our ship is docking at Freeport which is about 5 miles from the city center. I have a walking tour from Frommers which starts at the city center and our plan is to take a taxi from the pier to the start of the tour and then a taxi back to the ship when our walking tour is completed. Is this a doable plan? Any other ideas? Thanks for any info. Susan

In fact, I would think most of the posters here, who have been to Copenhagen, probably did all or most of the city on their own. Depending on how you want to do it on your own, that is the only thing you have to worry about. From your post you want to do a walking tour. To us, that is the best way to see Copenhagen. We did a walking tour of basically the entire main part of the city, including the Little Mermaid, The Palace, the Changing of the Guards, the Nyhaven section where you must do a canal boat tour. Then heading into the main part of the city along the Stroget, to the main square, where you can see the City Hall, where Tivoli gardens are. From there we headed to Rosenborg Castle and gardens, and then back to our ship after spending some time just sitting in one of the lovely parks in town. We also did a lot of side streets and just wandering around. Copenhagen is made for a walking tour. Here are a few of my pix of our tour there to help get you orientated The Little Mermaid sits on a rock, right in Copenhagen harbor (she is traveling this year to china) http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster219-1.jpg The Nyhaven section of Copenhagen where you should do the Canal Boat trip or just a wonderful section to just walk around and get some great food http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe247.jpg The Royal Palace where you can catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony every day http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe230.jpg Walking on the Stroget to Copenhagen's main square http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe285.jpg Rosenborg Castle, from the magnificent rose gardens. gottogocruisin Posted March 20, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 20, 2010 Len thanks once again for your pictures and your information. My question is do you have to use the currency of Copenhagen when you travel from the ship to the main city. I really do not want to get currency in for all those countries, yet my problem is transportation from the ship to the center of most of the cities. Any help would be appreciated. Giantfan13 Posted March 21, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 21, 2010 Len, Thanks so much for all the info and photos. We weren't sure about the canal tour, but now its definitely on our list. Thanks, Susan Susan thanks for the kind words on the pix. It is about an hour's worth of your time to do the Canal boat tour, but, it is a MUST do in Copenhagen. The Nyhaven section is just a joy to walk around. It is only a few blocks on both sides of the canal, but it is bustling with activity, restaurants, shops and if you are in the right place at a certain time, the royal Guards come marching by, band and all. Here are a few more pix of the tour, some of the great things you will see You leave from the Nyhaven section, buildings and shops all 'so European' http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster248.jpg Along the way, you pass some 'cute' things, boats and all sorts of stuff http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster277.jpg You go under many VERY low bridges, so the tour boats are very low and wide http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster280.jpg Along the way, you will see Copenhagen from a different angle http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster284.jpg Here is a short video I took on the boat tour Cheers Len
Giantfan13 Posted March 21, 2010 #7 Share Posted March 21, 2010 Len thanks once again for your pictures and your information. My question is do you have to use the currency of Copenhagen when you travel from the ship to the main city. I really do not want to get currency in for all those countries, yet my problem is transportation from the ship to the center of most of the cities. Any help would be appreciated. First, thank YOU for the kind words about the pix and info. As for the currency, we wanted to have some of the currency for several of the countries we were in, like Denmark, Sweden, the Euro countries and some pounds for our stay in London. I'm sure if you only had US Dollars, they will accept them, but you will get back Danish Krona in return. You can always try and charge as much as you can, but it would help a great deal if you have SOME Danish Krona, just to buy a few things, maybe from a stand, or even if you had to go to the bathroom. Most of the public toilets in European countries charge a coin or two to use, and if you ain't got one, you better be prepared to 'hold it in'. I am at an age, when you gotta go, you gotta go, and no time to start hunting around for a 'free' WC. Maybe one of our Danish posters can answer the exact question about getting on the bus, or any public transportation, if you need to pay with Danish Krona??. I didn't take the bus, so I cannot comment on it. We wanted to get the feel of the counties we were in and wanted to use the local currency. You know, 'When in Rome do as the Romans do' or something like that. Why force American money on them, when just hitting an ATM for some pocket change will work out better. Here are a few more Pix of our time in Copenhagen Part of the Changing of the Guard ceremony, at the Palace every day http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster234.jpg Not far from the crusie ship dock there are several wonderful statues and columns with beautiful flowers http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe221.jpg The Marble Church, not far from the Palace http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe239.jpg a wonderful church that was not far from where the ship docked http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe353.jpg My DW sitting with hans Christian Anderson http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe318.jpg In Town square, Copenhagen City hall http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe326.jpg Cheers Len

gottogocruisin Posted March 21, 2010 #10 Share Posted March 21, 2010 Len I am even more desperate then you as I am in my 70's and when nature calls it REALLY calls. Thanks for the tip. I understand that we can exchange money at the pier and get some local money to use when we are in the ports. Your information is very helpful. We now have 70 days to cruise and I have been counting down for over a year. This is also the fun part of the process however.

I have another question - where do we pick up the canal boat tour? I checked their website and it isn't clear. Thanks again for all your help. Susan Susan As you look at the map Danish Viking just put up, you can see the canal of Nyhaven either ends or starts (depending on how you are looking at it) at that point that is highlighted. Here is a picture from around that point http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster292.jpg From the pix, you can see the building and the bridge. There is sort of a little square there, and you buy you tickets for the Canal boat tour right there. There are, I believe, a couple of booths and you can charge it or pay cash. These boats leave very often so if you miss one the next one will be along shortly. It is a whole lot of fun, especially when you have to duck your hands when you go under certain bridges. Susan We got our canal boat tour nearby to our cruise ship, but then it finished near the Christansbourg Palace as shown below. It seemed that many people boarded such tours there, also, in this very central location. Here are a few examples of what we saw on our canal boat trip. Loved it!!!! THANKS! Enjoy! RedRover101 Posted March 23, 2010 #18 Share Posted March 23, 2010 I've been to CPH twice before for business. It is lovely, and definitely easy to see and do on foot, even for a 60 y.o. woman with arthritis. They also have an excellent underground (maybe they call it an S-bahn or T-bahn - I've forgotten). Everyone speaks English and everyone is polite and friendly. I have found the Rick Steves guidebook (Scandinavia, I think) to be very helpful and he suggests walks and 'must-sees', and has good maps There are also the ever-popular 'highlights' tour buses that leave across from the Town Hall not far from the entrance to Tivoli. I agree, the canal boat ride is a must: fun, scenic. The one I took left from Nyhavn, which is very colorful and fun waterfront area, perfect for good (overpriced?) food and drink. I also enjoyed their History museum - everything was in English (!) as well as Danish. Have fun
offtraveling Posted March 23, 2010 #19 Share Posted March 23, 2010 We have a morning excursion through the cruise line, but will return to the ship around 12:30pm (Langelinie Pier). Does anyone know where to find the canal boat schedule? Will will only have about 3 hours that afternoon to see the sights. Could anyone recom. a walking sched? cruisesusie Posted March 23, 2010 Author #20 Share Posted March 23, 2010 Terry, Thanks so much for the photos - they're beautiful. Did your ship dock at Langeline or Freeport? It would be very convenient to pick up the canal tour near our pier. Heidi - for good walking tours, try http://www.Frommers.com. Susan
Sheal Posted March 23, 2010 #21 Share Posted March 23, 2010 Offtraveling, This is one of the 2 companies I have seen mentioned on the boards here. DFDS has 4 different tours depending on where you want to pick it up, Nyhavn or Gammal Strand, and what you want to see. http://www.canaltours.com/dct/en Another company that has tours and is supposed to be cheaper is Netto. I can't seen to find a website for that one. Sheal
