Ship shuttles?

Going on 1st cruise to Med in Oct/Nov this year. I was reading about Venice on another thread and saw a comment about paying $10 one way for the ships shuttle. I had not realized that you have to pay to get off the ship? All of our ports are listed as docked. I assummed you just walked off the ship. Please fill me in on how it's done. Thanks!

Shuttle usually refers to a bus service that the cruise line runs from the dock into town. If you were not docked, but anchored, it would be called a tender. EM

You do not pay to get off the ship...the $10 is for the bus to take you into town from the port. Some ports kind of have you trapped as far as this goes because the ship docks in one location but the main town/city is further than casual walking distance away...so, to "help" you out they have a bus/shuttle to take you.:rolleyes:

I better learn the lingo - shuttle/tender. Okay taking a bus to the nearby town makes sense but what about Venice? I know there's no buses there.

You can walk off the ship for free. The charge is for a shuttle (usually bus) to the central city. In Venice it is probably to San Marco Plaza

But I thought there were no wheeled vehicles in Venice.
