How Do Guys Dress on Celebrity?

We are frequent Royal cruisers and just booked our first cruise on Celebrity. The itinerary, price and dates of the cruise seemed perfect for us, but now we are wondering if Celebrity might be a bit too upscale for us when it comes to dress code.

Is the dress code as stated on the Celebrity FAQ page strictly enforced? That is, do you see guys in shorts in the casino and nightly shows or is every man in slacks after 6? We both like to dress nicely, but casual. On Royal, slacks and a golf shirt are okay in the main dinning room on non-formal nights and slacks, a turtle neck and sports coat is okay for formal nights. How would this be received on Celebrity?

Also, does Celebrity Millinium Class ships have a casual buffet type restaurant similar to Royal's Windjammer? How about burgers, pizza, etc.

We cruised once with Holland and found it too formal for our taste. Do you think we would have the same experience with Celebrity?

Thanks for your input.

What is the itinerary? I found the Caribbean cruise to be quite casual. I would say that MAYBE 25% of the men wore tuxes to dinner and that is being generous. It certainly isn't casual like Carnival or NCL... but I would not call the atmosphere stuffy and overly formal. I find HAL crowd to be older, more conservative and more formal.

Yes, the Millennium class ships do have a casual buffet type dining area.

You won't see men in shorts after 6, except for the buffet & outdoor bars, but a golf shirt & chinos would be fine for every night, there are lots of options if you don't want to do formal night in the MDR.

Oh, sorry, didn't see that you're on m class, no buffet, but a casual dining area, I think you pay $2 for it, it's been a long time since we were on the Infinity.

You know... there's a search option. It will search the threads for ALL related posts regarding your inquiry.

I don't mean to be snippy or rude but if you were to do a search you'd see how many threads have asked relatively the same question and how many responses have basically answered your question.

IMHO from what I have seen dress is a lot more casual than you would be led to believe on these boards. Sounds like what you wore on RCCL would be OK.

It has been a few years since I have been on a Royal cruise. At that time there was a distinct difference in the dress with Royal being dressed down. These days Celebrity has relaxed their dress and eliminated jacket and tie for non-formal nights and more often than not you will see slacks and sport shirts or khakis and sport shirts. People do wear shorts in the casino at night, not too much but definitely yes, but I do think that for the theatre shows nearly everyone is still in their 'dinner' clothes.

I think you will be OK with the change to Celebrity and won't feel underdressed.

The casual dining area that Finely mentioned is located in the area of the buffet. It is $2.00 PP and reservations are requested but not always required. It is a dinner served off a menu different than that served in the MDR. There is not problem with shorts in the casual area...

Celebrity does not have a full buffet for dinner as you would get for breakfast and lunch. You will have pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sushi and some salads available.

I don't want to prolong another dress code thread, but will say that I have also been on RCL and don't think that a turtle neck and sports jacket is appropriate on formal night there either. At least wear a shirt and tie with a jacket.

You asked how guys dress on Celebrity-I have been on 19 cruises and always follow the dress code. I guarantee you that, even in my tux, no one who ever met me considers me stuffy.

Happy Sails to You

One other fashion diffrence, you probably won't see any men's T shirts without sleeves in the MDR or buffet on Celebrity during the day...

Thank goodness, not exactly an appetite enhancer!!!

The dress code is not strictly enforced but large departures are. Personally I like formal night and believe a tux really makes a difference. On past cruises the majority wore tuxes but on our recent Caribbean cruise there were more dark suits & nice sport coats and ties than tuxes. I think at least a dark jacket and a very nice dress shirt, even without a tie but preferably with one, would make you feel more comfortable on formal night - but I doubt if they'd kick you out if you wear what you suggested.

They have the full buffet, nicer than windjammer with more options, in the daytime for lunch. At night the buffet areas are reduced. All ships have limited open buffet stations in the evening for pizza, pasta made to order, salad bar, and sushi and stir fry. On the M-class ships they have a casual dining area set up in the buffet area in the evenings with table service (waiters) and a more limited menu than the main dining room - a good alternative if you want a sit down dinner but want to dress casually. On S-class they have more buffet options than the M-class but no casual table service. S-class does have the Bistro on 5, a $5/pp up-charge, which I believe is casual. Food there is pretty good - better than I expected when I heard creps and much more than that.

I just took a Caribbean cruise on the Equinox, and I was suprised at how many men wore tuxes on formal night. Especially at the early seating. I would estimate it was 30-40%. I thought they looked great! That being said, my husband wore dress slacks, tie and navy blazer and he fit in just fine.

"How do guys dress on Celebrity?"

I usually put my shirt on first, then my pants, then the shoes go on last.

:D - :D - :D - :D

Ha Ha - I kill myself...:p

Too Funny!!!

Hope you and Donna are doing well. Rick and I leave on Sunday for our first =X= cruise. We are really looking forward to a new experience.

Unless things have changed since this past Dec, there was a limited Buffet at dinner time on the Connie. It was limited to stir fry, a pasta station and perhaps Sushi-not sure as it's not something I care for.

Another option for you to dress casually for dinner.

I have yet to sail on Celebrity, but I had the same questions about HAL before I went on that trip. I was all worried, reading on this message board about all the rules in dressing.. Then I went on the trip , and it was NOTHING like what was said on this. It was way more relaxed. I worried for nothing! I was better dressed than most cause I read too much!

Sailed on the Liberty of the Seas last Spring. What most pax wore to dinner - business casual or more dressy most nights and Tux/suit and tie or fancy dresses/skirts and tops as formal wear. All would look great on all but the most formal of cruise lines (IMO).

 Say it ain't so! So, help me if you could. For dinner, there's the MDR, Normandie's, and NO buffet? And what's this $2pp place? Is that the in the buffet, but you're just served what you would get in the buffet anyway? Can you ask for seconds? Are other places open like the pool area for hamburgers and pizza?

The M Class ships have a sit down area in the buffet area in the evening. There are limited options for a buffet type thing such as pasta, but the casual dining area is not a buffet and the burger/hot dog place closes at 6. There is a $2 per person charge for the sit down casual area.

To the OP, Celebrity is not like RCI in terms of dress. Yes, you will see a few who do not dress formal, but they are VERY much in the minority. And, I have personally seen men who were in casual clothes on formal nights refused entry into the dining room. You will see a few men in shorts in the public areas of the ship at night, but they will be very few, and I've never seen men in shorts in the lounges or bars at night.

The casual dining area uses some of the tables from the buffet restaruant. They are set with linens, glassware etc. Just like in the MDR. You are given menus that have items different from the MDR. But are served by staff. The 2.00 charge is towards a tip for these servers, who actually are in training to become head waiters. Not sure if you can get seconds, but I would guess yes. Dress is casual.

Outdoor grill closes at about 6 each day.

The buffet items in the buffet restaurant usually include a fresh pasta station, pizza, salad bar and sometimes a Chinese or stir fry area. Enough for sure to make a meal. And you can always take your buffet food outdoors to eat at the aft bar, which is a fun place to hang out. Very casual.

Hey, Lisa!!!

Great to hear from old "Motley Cruisers"!! I noticed the picture at your signature, too.

I hope you hve time to check back and get my responce. I'm going to find your rollcall and post this there as well.

Take me with you!! :D I'll fit in a duffle bag and sleep in a life boat. I'm really envious. We have to wait until Nov. for our next cruise, unless something comes up last-minute this summer.

You will LOVE Celebrity! We went on the Infinity last November for our first Celebrity Cruise, and several times throughout the 13 days, Donna and I both caught ourselves saying, "This is as good as RCI used to be." ;)

Great to hear from you.

After being an X loyalist....Would NEVER do it again...It was a blatent reminder of our times on Carnival....basically anything goes....

X HAD set higher standards but unfortunately the selfish public has and is driving them down.

X was the last line to have a three tiered dress code..now it is only two....1) Whatever and 2) nicer than whatever to be considered formal.

We still pack our tuxes, dinner jackets and navy blazers.....Our packing hasn't changed because we don't overpack and carry crap onboard.

We utilize the laundry services frequently.

To the origanl post, NO a turtleneck and sports coat are NOT FORMAL..It would be considered Country club casual....A dark suit with a tie, dinner jacket, or tux is the definition of formal...

However on casual days Khakis and a polo are just fine anywhere on the ship..
