LMAO!!!!

Well, I gotta give the lady a 1/2 point for the signs and creativity! Much more creative than the usual banana, orange or Croc!

I would eat the banana or orange and throw the Croc over board. Who ever invented those things need to lock up for life.

You know - for the price of a cruise - inside stateroom - in the bowels of the ship I would do it. It would cost them less than $70 a day for me to tag chairs and remove crap that people drop on it at 6AM. I am menaposal, I am mean and I ain't small - just let some one challenge me. I'm in - anyone else want to join me. I love posting this time of the night after a drink of two - I grow balls

You know that you can count me in!!:D

I'm in favor of there being no seats "saved" at all. If a person isn't actually in a seat, it's up for grabs, regardless of what junk may have been put on it. The assumption would be that the previous chair occupant just forgot their stuff and that the stuff needs to go to lost and found... or on the deck under the chair.

Generally, it seems like half or more of all the loungers are empty ( of actual people) the majority of each day. If people knew that their stuff would automatically be removed and the chair occupied, they would stop leaving it on the chairs because it's a pain to have to try to find it.

If people take their stuff with them when they leave the pool area, no matter for how long, then all those chairs would be available and when they return to the pool there would always be other chairs available, too. Demanding that others be inconvenienced because your group of ten or more demands to be seated together (just in case they decide to come to the pool area) is the ultimate in selfishness and rudeness.

I also love the way the chair hogs say that they just "run" or "dash" or "dart" to the buffet for lunch, or to their rooms for naps. It's like the dining room slobs saying that they always wear "nice" cut off jean shorts and wife-beaters to the dining room.:)

It's all so self-serving and so "ME! ME! ME!" that it makes one want to weep with sadness. :(

What you say makes perfect sense to me. If everyone took their stuff with them everytime they got up, there would always be chairs available (at least in theory). Yet, you will find that most people think this shouldn't be applied as a blanket rule across the board. I started a thread about chair hogs and somewhere in my original post I suggested that even if you got up to take a dip in the pool your chair should be up for the grabs. Well you should have seen the insults, threats and backlash I got for suggesting that! I still personally think that the chairs are for lounging and it you want to swim, eat, nap (unless it's in your lounge chair), etc. you need to relinquish your chair. Of course the only exception should be for restroom breaks or a quick trip to the bar ON DECK (not going back to your room to mix up a cocktail).

I have to tell you - after reading all these posts and going on our first cruise in October - I'm getting a little worried!

I want to have a relaxing vacation - but I feel like I have to worry about not being able to find chairs for my kids and hubby at the pool. I don't want to have to get up at the crack of dawn and drag all of us down there just so we have a chair. Then if we wait we won't find anything!! This is too stressful...

I can just see me getting in a fight with a chair hog....:)

Makes me nervous too. We usually go to the top, very top deck, but the Freedom has a Serenity deck and dang, I want to try it.LOL Guess I'll wake up at the crack of dawn.

I hate confrontation, but you gotta do what you gotta do.:D

I don't think a person should leave their chair if they plan on coming back within a few minutes...lets say 15 or less...you may want to jump in the pool for 2 or 3 minutes, go to the bathroom, grab a drink or an ice cream, whatever...but not lose their chair for that...that is not a chair hog...

A chair hog is one that saves a seat and walks away for a ridiculous amount of time or never comes back...it is more with the mentality that I will save it incase I need one when I am ready...

I know I enjoy certain spots on the ship and when I get a chair there I don't want to give it up. There are 2 scenarios...hubby and I are hungry...he stays in his chair and saves mine while I go the buffet and gets us both lunch and we come back and remain in out seats for however long...leaving with every intention of returning as soon as possible...even leaving a man behind to fend for me...I don't think I should lose my chair for that.

Other scenario...we are hungry, put our crap on the chairs and go sit in the MDR and enjoy our 1 1/2 lunch...first of all I would never do that, I would take my stuff with me as I am leaving the area...but if I did leave it there I would not be upset if someone moved it...that is chair hogging...I would expect to lose my chair in that situation.

But the one that irritates me the most is the one that gets us early and saves chairs for everyone they know and then goes and eats...leaving 5-25 chairs with personal belongings on them, that way IF and WHEN they show up they have a seat...

Best time for the Serenity deck is at lunch time or a little sooner...this is when the people lounging all morning have had enough and are ready to eat and a lot of chairs free up, also a good time to get rid of some things left behind on the chairs...

If you are in the pool, I think you should be able to save seats. Where else are you going to put your towel, sunglasses, drink glass, etc while you swim? Otherwise, unless you are getting up to use the restroom, buy a drink, get a plate of food to take back to your deck chair or whatever else you want to do that takes no more than 10 or 15 minutes, then you should pick your stuff up off the chair so others can have access to it.

This was one of our biggest pet peeves while on the Valor last year because it seemed like everytime we tried to get a deck chair they were covered with people's crap who weren't even there using them. In fact, we never could get a chair by the main pool. The only time we got a chair by the Serenity pool was early one morning we happened to come upon two empty chairs together, but that was the only time we were able to sit by the pools at all.

I don't think anyone wants to 'take' pool chairs, essp. while someone is actually in the pool. :o

A trip to the DECK BAR, ICE CREAM MACHINE... I mean really, common sense.

If you are enjoying the 'deck' than by all means keep a chair; a MDR trip, hitting the casino, napping... nope, That chair is fair game. When I watch a chair for hours empty... IT IS FAIR GAME! LOL

That's exactly the kind of person I'll want to "deck"...(no pun intended :D)

Could it possibly be due to the fact you are wanting to make up your own rules

instead of going by Carnivals.

If everyone was to make their own rules, then the chair hogs would have

every right to save chairs for days on end

..if that was their rule.

Carnival says after 40 minutes.

If you can go to the buffet, your cabin, whatever and be back in 40

minutes then it is ok with them..and ok with me too.

When we sailed the Dream in May, we came back from our excursion in the Bahamas, changed into our swimsuits, and headed out to suntan. No chairs. Ok, no problem---there were stacks of chairs everywhere, still belted together.

Problem--trying to find someone to unlash the deck chairs so people could use them! My husband found Megan (one of the cruise directors) and brought her up to the deck. She didn't know what to do. She called someone on the walkie-talkie and he showed up---but he had no idea how to unbuckle the chairs.

After about 20 minutes, several men were on the task, trying to help the young crew member figure out to unbuckle the chairs. Megan again talked to someone on the walkie-talkie and asked, "Why aren't these already out on the decks? That makes no sense!"

Anyway, all's well that ends well, and the crew member did eventually (with the help of the other men) get the chairs unlashed and put out on the deck. The chairs were full in a matter of minutes!

If you'd go back to my post you'd see that I said it was my SUGGESTION as in my OPINION! Nothing about making up rules there guy. Reading comprehension is a beautiful thing.

In my OPINION (and I am entitled to it) the whole problem lies in allowing people 40 whole minutes to lay claim to a chair that isn't being used regardless of what they are off doing. You see, I'm voicing my opinion in a thread about a Carnival rule. Now that IS allowed on the Cruise Critic boards (I didn't make up my own rule on that one).

It's just so funny when some people want to bash anyone that dares to have a negative opinion about one of the rules on their beloved Carnival. We're just discussing this particular rule; if we all thought the same this would be one extremely boring world. Lighten up Francis. :p

while i have never had a real problem with chair hogs (and i hope i never do), i think the 40 minute rule is a little long. i could feasibly go the bathroom, the bar, grab some lunch, hit a few slots and probably be back within 40 minutes. what happens when someone saves a chair for someone, that person shows up say for 5 minutes and then is gone again for another 40 minutes only to return and claim the chair. sporadic attendance of the mystery chair hogs. maybe 30 would be better.

i think their needs to be a time limit in place. and passengers shouldn't have to deal with the chair hogs. unfortunatley there are those people out there that rise at the crack of dawn and save all the prime real estate around the pools for multiple guest.

nothing wrong with saving a chair for your significant other. nothing wrong with cooling yourself in the pool or at the bar. grab a snack and by all means please go tot the bathroom. but please return occupy your chair more often than not so that everyone can have some fun by the pool.:D

Every ship I have sailed on has had a policy that there is to be no saving of seats on deck or in the showrooms. The rule is really very simple:

How to tell if a chair is available:

1 If someone's butt is in the chair, then the chair is in use and unavailable.

2 If nobody's butt is in the chair, then the chair is not in use and is available.

I have had some "hogs"come back and tell me that I stole their chair.I told them I was sorry but their chair happens to look like all of the other chairs which belong to Carnival Cruise Line for their passengers use. Of course if the hog can show me a receipt where they pruchased the chair I will gladly vacate it.

I once had a big lady hog tell me that she had only went to the bathroom and I stole her chair. The chair had been vacant over 3 hours ! I told her if she was in the bathroom for 3 hours that I would suggest she visit the ship's doctor and if she was truely in the bathroom 3 hours then I would imagine her big butt was occupying another seat. How would she have liked it if I had saved all the seats in the lady's room?

I love messing with hogs---makes my cruise.

Again, I agree. How simple is it to just say that you can't claim any chair that you're not sitting in?

It should really be as simple as...the chairs are for enjoying time on deck (pool, drinks, snacks). If you're not engaging in this kind of activity, you shouldn't have hold on any chairs (being gone for a toilet break being an exception). IMHO, losing your chair because you got up to take a cooling dip in the pool is a bit extreme.

vacruisin, I am from VA originally and I recall many many summer days going to the pool, don't you? Did you expect to lose your chair when you got into the pool or was that considered yours as long as you were there at the pool? Or how about going to VA Beach or Ocean City and laying your towels down in a given spot? When you get up to cool off in the water, would it be ok for someone to come along and chuck all of your things to the side because they wanted that particular section of sand for themselves? Your suggestion says that this would be acceptable to you.

We just have to use common sense. The people who are holding masses of chairs know they're being inconsiderate...they just don't care because they're inconsiderate. Nothing is going to change them. We just have to revel in the times we're able to really tick them off :D
